To refuse lift to smoker because she smells?

Obviously not as blunt as that but she lights up just before getting in the car and it stinks. So AIBU to tell her to get the bus if she can't wait?

I don't think you are being unreasonable especially if it is a regular lift you give her. tell her that you'd appreciate her not smoking before she gets in your car. If she doesn't like it or takes offence she can find always find another lift.

Ploppie4 · 24/10/2017 19:34

The smell of a smoker makes me gag and feel sick. So do incense burners and perfume.

Sallystyle · 24/10/2017 19:34

If you're living with smokers though, even if you don't smoke yourself, you'll be accustomed to the smell. You just won't notice it the same as when you're in a household completely free of smokers.

I don't live with smokers but my friend who smokes outside has no smell of smoke in her house at all and neither does mine when she has been here and smoked outside.

I am an ex smoker, but my sense of smell is fantastic. I am sure I will be told that it isn't, but it is just rubbish that someone sitting on your sofa after having a cigarette outside will make your sofa smell for ages.

The smoker smells, the stuff they have sat on doesn't. Unless they are chain smokers who never change their clothes or shower of course.

KrytensNanobots · 24/10/2017 19:35

Pandora I think the key there is the fact that you say you used to smoke yourself.
You just won't notice how much it lingers. I've never smoked, and it really, really does, You can smell smokers a mile off and it does linger on things.

Mantegnaria · 24/10/2017 19:37

Smokers stink. So do their clothes. Smokers have damaged their sense of smell so they can't always tell that they stink and often think it isn't too bad. In fact, it is too bad and you just shouldn't put up with it.

Tell her no.

PandorasXbox · 24/10/2017 19:42

DH has never smoked in his life and cannot smell anything.

Dutch1e · 24/10/2017 19:52

I smoke (rollies, which this thread have taught me don't smell so bad) but it's car exhaust that gives me the dull throbbing headache, especially when I ride my bike and get some speed up that makes me take deeper breaths.

And cars smell really bad, even though we are mostly numb to it. When I've been away in truly clean air the smell of cars makes me a bit sick.

Cars are stinky and people die from them. Honestly I wish they were illegal.

I've never shunned anyone in real life for being a car owner though. Maybe I will now that it's ok to be unkind to people about their choices.

manicmij · 24/10/2017 19:53

YANBU. The smell of cigarette smoke makes me feel sick. If getting in a lift and I sense the smell I wait on next one, same if someone smelling of cigarette smoke gets in I have to get out. How these smokers do not sense that they stink is beyond me.

BuzzKillington · 24/10/2017 19:53

I just thought of this thread buying food in my local M&S. Someone walked past me that had clearly just had a fag outside. Ew, she stank.

She didn't make the whole shop stink however.

Sallystyle · 24/10/2017 20:10

Well, I used to smoke. Doesn't stop me from smelling smoke on other people or in their houses if they smoke in it.

So yes, I would absolutely notice if smoke is lingering in my car if someone who smokes has sat in it after they had a cigarette, and I'm sure Panda would too. My sense of smell is perfectly good. You do know that when you quit smoking your sense of smell does return? My sense of smell is no different than someone who never smoked anymore.

Sallystyle · 24/10/2017 20:11

Sorry Pandora not Panda

Micksee15 · 24/10/2017 20:16

Yes you are.
she's who she is (I'm a non smoker and hate it) but how old you feel if someone didn't want to give you a lift due to not liking your house scent, perfume etc?
stop being so judgemental and suck it up

Micksee- suck it up? Don't make me laugh.

The OP, or any of us, can decline to give lifts to any one, for any reason at all (or for no reason!). It's a private vehicle, the op is under no obligation to let anyone use it.

People's own homes, ditto.

Abbylee · 24/10/2017 21:54

They have odor eating cleaners now that do not harm fabric. I think that it is unlikely that smoke will permeate your seats forever.

I hope that you do not leave a "friend" stranded bc of an inanimate object....and yes, I own a car, I know all about costs, but if she is a good friend, I would buy the bio-cleaner.

Abbylee · 24/10/2017 21:57

HOWEVER! I buy antique/old furniture and give that a good sniff bc the smell never leaves ....lost money bc stale smoke made my home smell awful. I am ex smoker....I miss it, but cigarette suicide is not reasonable.

KrytensNanobots · 24/10/2017 22:00

Those saying smoke doesn't linger on clothes for days, are you the ones who sell stuff on Ebay?! Because I'll tell you now it doesn't matter HOW much you've washed it (you can tell they've washed it because it'll smell of being freshly washed but will have this god awful foisty, musty, old cigarette smoke smell which will just not go away even after rewashing.
You can smell smokers clothes straight away, anyone saying otherwise must be in denial.

PandorasXbox · 24/10/2017 22:08

Ds smokes outside. Always. His clothes do not smell of cigarettess. And what’s selling stuff on eBay got to do with anything? Grin

SherbrookeFosterer · 24/10/2017 22:08

Your car, your rules.

KrytensNanobots · 24/10/2017 22:12

And what’s selling stuff on eBay got to do with anything

The fact that I'd bet they'd tell you that their clothes don't smell but yes they DO Grin
Clothes absolutely honk of smoke, and anyone who says otherwise is either in denial or too used to the smell either due to smoking themselves either presently or in the past, or from just being around smokers in general.

EyeRollChampion · 24/10/2017 22:21

Well, it depends how good a friend they are. I quit smoking 2 years ago and now the smell makes me feel really pukey. I live in a horrible area and my house constantly stinks of fags from passers by. It gives me the rage.

Having said that, I would still give a good friend a lift. It's so tough to quit and you don't know how much you stink.

Lokisglowstickofdestiny · 24/10/2017 22:23

Smokers clothes do smell of smoke. A few years ago we rented a house where the previous tenants were smokers (they were out puffing away in the garden when we looked around). We moved in and about to put our clothes in the built in wardrobes, opened the doors and the interior reeked of stale smoke. We shampooed the carpet, fabreezed it and wash the walls, it still stunk. Ended up using our own standalone wardrobes in the end. It was the only bit of the house that smelled thankfully.

embo1 · 24/10/2017 22:35

Your car, your choice. If she wants a lift that badly, she can wait and have her fag after the lift.

willothewisp17 · 24/10/2017 22:36

yanbu in the slightest.
