To refuse lift to smoker because she smells?

Obviously not as blunt as that but she lights up just before getting in the car and it stinks. So AIBU to tell her to get the bus if she can't wait?

Why are you giving her a lift anyway ?

More backstory please

However I smoke very few and I hate the smell of smokers. They stink so your probably not.

YANBU

Aquamarine1029 · 23/10/2017 13:45

YANBU. The smell of smoke is disgusting and it clings to everything. She wouldn't be sitting in my car.

MonkeyJumping · 23/10/2017 13:47

Yanbu.

I think you can say politely "I'm sorry, I don't give lifts to smokers because the smell clings to the seat fabric"

Be warned she will probably not believe she smells of smoke because smokers can't smell it as well as non smokers can.

Seniorcitizen1 · 23/10/2017 13:47

I dont let smokers in my car ever - they just stink. Make her get the bus

londonrach · 23/10/2017 13:50

Yanbu. I wouldnt. The smell sticks around

LurkingHusband · 23/10/2017 13:50

Obviously not as blunt as that

er, why not ?

CherieBabySpliffUp · 23/10/2017 13:50

Yanbu

Your wheelz
Your rulez

Hun🤣

Ttbb · 23/10/2017 13:51

YANBU, why would you be obliged to give her a life anyway?

Ohmyfuck · 23/10/2017 13:56

YANBU. Once she gets out, the smell will linger. It's foul.

musicform · 23/10/2017 13:57

YANBU. I have a friend who smokes and she has been in my new car twice and I haven't got the heart to say no [though I might put bin bags down if there is a next time]

LurkingHusband · 23/10/2017 14:01

We - once - gave DS friend a lift, not realising he smoked. He didn't light up in the car, but his coat stank.

That was 6 months ago. Every so often (especially if it's been very sunny) I can still catch a whiff of smoke.

MinorRSole · 23/10/2017 14:01

Yabu and I’m surprised by the responses. Your friend vs a smell? Just have the windows open and buy an air freshener. It’s not like she’s smoking in your car (which would be unacceptable)

splendidisolation · 23/10/2017 14:03

Unreasonable as it gets. And precious. And mean.

Jaxhog · 23/10/2017 14:05

YANBU. I'm with the other non smokers. Smoke lingers. If you still want to give her a lift, put down a bin bag and tell her not to smoke just before she gets in your car. It's this last thing that is particularly antisocial.

MyBrilliantDisguise · 23/10/2017 14:06

You think she should give the lift, splendidisolation? Even with your username?

Bubblebubblepop · 23/10/2017 14:06

Don't tell her she smells, it's unkind and quite spiteful. Just make up and excuse as to why you can't give her a lift

diddl · 23/10/2017 14:06

Are you saying that she smokes in your car or will have had one just before she gets in?

Either way it would be a no for me-smelly clothes & hair/confined space-yuk!

MonkeyJumping · 23/10/2017 14:07

Smokers always seem to be in denial about how much they smell and how much the smell lingers on.

Opening windows won't help. Buying an air freshener may or may not mask the smell, but is another smell the OP may not want in her car.

victoire1208 · 23/10/2017 14:09

God you all sound like a barrel of laughs. I'd rather have a car ride with a fag ash Lil than a precious pearl clutcher.

emmyrose2000 · 23/10/2017 14:09

YANBU
I don't allow smokers in my cars or my home. Nor will I sit next to one in a public place.

theymademejoin · 23/10/2017 14:09

Politely asking that they don't light up before getting in the car is perfectly reasonable. My sister and niece know not to smoke for at least 10 minutes before getting in my car and they smoke rollies which aren't anywhere near as smelly as normal cigarettes.

Is it just smokers banned from your car or is it also new mums and their faint whiff of child vomit and faeces under a layer of suffocating powdery floriental fragrance?
