To refuse lift to smoker because she smells?

Obviously not as blunt as that but she lights up just before getting in the car and it stinks. So AIBU to tell her to get the bus if she can't wait?

'YANBU, it’s smells rank.'
Really? so as 'it smells rank' so you wouldn't give a friend a lift after they'd put it out? You should carry smelling salts around for any 'rank' smells you may encounter.

JacquesHammer · 23/10/2017 16:37

Yes many people are the same, but restricting smokers after they've smoked is, as a pp said, being a whinyarse.

If someone is that desperate for a lift they can wait to have a fag until after they get out. Having a fag immediately before you get in a non-smoker's car is anti-social.

LurkingHusband · 23/10/2017 16:40

NewLove yes but that car was probably smoked IN - that's far removed from someone having been in the car who had smoked before getting into it.

Nope. Someone wearing smoky clothes will leave a smoky smell in the fabric. As I noticed after giving DS friend a lift for 20 minutes.

Once.

(I have no idea if leather upholstery is any less vulnerable).

teaandtoast · 23/10/2017 16:42

Dear me op, I think you've upset all the whinyarse smokers who don't realise how much they smell. 😂

mygorgeousmilo · 23/10/2017 16:43

YANBU and anyone who doesn’t think it stinks is obviously desensitised in some way. It’s not that bad if someone has smoked at some stage previously, but if they smoke just as they’re about to get in then it’s really strong. I’m on a course at the moment with smokers. The smell in the morning isn’t too bad, as perhaps it’s had time to fade on the walk, but once they’ve had their fag break and come straight back into the room then it’s disgusting.

WitchesGlove · 23/10/2017 16:44

Trust me- shit/vomit do leave a horrible smell, and are very hard to get the smell out of!

Not good for you either, very unhygienic!

florapearl · 23/10/2017 16:45

If someone has a fag and then gets into your car the smell is VERY powerful.

RedBlackberries · 23/10/2017 16:45

I'm aware that smoking over a period of time in an inclosed space is going to make that space and all the fabrics stink. I've had the humiliation of someone rejecting some baby clothes I'd passed on to her because they smelt of smoke Blush.

This situation is nowhere near the same though. It's a lift where they'll not actually be smoking. That's why this thread seems a bit extreme.

Again m, said from a non smoker!!

WeAllHaveWings · 23/10/2017 16:49

As an ex smoker I 100% agree with this.

FizzyGreenWater · 23/10/2017 16:50

Surely threads like this are proof of how much it really does stink and really, really is absolutely foul?

It's sickening. Yep some people don't mind it. Those who smoke are obviously vocally against the idea that it's any worse than any other smell. But then you have threads like this, all the time.

Smoke is so long lasting, so pervasive. YES you can smell it long after someone has smoked, that rank ashy stink. On top of the permanent sour smell. Someone finishing a fag then breathing it out over the next few minutes in a car is sick making.

Nothing like diesel fumes or barbecues or paint or farts. Just nothing like.

florapearl · 23/10/2017 16:50

No, honestly black, get someone to know to light up and then get in a car with you. It's powerful.

Indeed and yet pretty much involuntary. Smoking is a choice, which of course everyone is free to make; however non-smokers should be just as at liberty to choose whether they want smokers in their car

RubMyRhubarb · 23/10/2017 16:51

Nope. Someone wearing smoky clothes will leave a smoky smell in the fabric. As I noticed after giving DS friend a lift for 20 minutes

I'm sorry I just don't believe it. Are you telling me that if I have a fag, and then you give me a lift, you can sniff your fabric and tell that I'd been smoking before getting in? For how long after do you claim you could smell this on your fabric?

I'm not disputing that you could smell smoke on me, but I simply do not believe you could smell it on the fabric of your car after giving me a lift.

Uptheduffy · 23/10/2017 16:52

I am thinking of one particular smoker, can't speak for them all. Her clothes smell. I am sure they are washed but the house smells, coats aren't washed after use obviously and the smell is in the very fabric of the house. After visits to me (during which time there is no smoking) the house smells of smoke. I can easily see how the car in the OP could smell. But I couldn't refuse the lift any more than I can tell the (dear) relative not to come to my house.

If she took fewer drugs she could afford a taxi.

Smokers smell. Fact. Covering up with stinky air fresheners just doubles the reek.

Leave her behind and tell her why. Smoking is a choice. Choices have consequences.

SlothMama · 23/10/2017 16:56

YANBU OP, smokers don't realise how much they stink. If you don't want the smell in your car then it's your choice!

User843022 · 23/10/2017 16:57

'I think you've upset all the whinyarse smokers who don't realise how much they smell.'

I don't smoke, a couple of friends and my dm do though. I would manage to cope with a faint whiff after they've put a cigarette out rather than being all precious and making them get the bus.

WeAllHaveWings · 23/10/2017 17:01

Are you telling me that if I have a fag, and then you give me a lift, you can sniff your fabric and tell that I'd been smoking before getting in?

Yes. I can still smell dh’s friends have been in the car 2 days later. You can’t smell it because you are a smoker. The only way to prove it to yourself is to stop smoking for a couple of years, then try taking a smoker in your car. Otherwise you just need to accept we aren’t lying, if smoking didn’t smell you wouldn’t have so many ex/non smokers telling you it does. Why would we if it didn’t!!

WeAllHaveWings · 23/10/2017 17:02

Oh, but some smokers smell much worse than others, depends on how often they clean jackets etc.

prettybird · 23/10/2017 17:04

I asked ds if his friend smoked as I'd given them a lift to St Andrews (Open Day) as I had noticed a strong smell of smoke on him (he'd walked to our house: about a 10 minute walk) when he got into the car. He said No and I have no reason to disbelieve him as he's talked with disapproval about other friends that smoke - but that his parents smoke heavily. Just goes to show how smells linger.

My mum (who was an English teacher) used to shock her class by going round the class saying correctly who smoked and who didn't. In their innocence, they thought that teachers couldn't tell. (and no, she didn't do playground duty to observe them Wink)

We used to have to fumigate aerate any presents that came from dh's parents as his dad smoked the occasional cigar and the presents would arrive impregnated with the smell. It's not longer a problem as he died 7 years ago - of lung cancer Sad. He'd smoked like a lum since he was 14 and he joined the Merchant Navy - cigars had been him "cutting down" Hmm. Before he died he made his grandchildren swear that they'd never never smoke.

So no, YANBU

JaneEyre70 · 23/10/2017 17:06

YANBU. It is their choice to smoke, just as it is yours not to be exposed to the rotten stench. I used to work in a care home, and several of the other staff used to smoke on their break then cover themselves in cheap body spray. It was a toxic combination [boak].

LurkingHusband · 23/10/2017 17:09

Just for the record, I used to smoke, and this is totally true.

A few years ago, at work, we had to close our windows, as the smoke from smokers working across the road (getting on for 50 metres) was drifting in when it was a really nice day Shock.
