Equality for everyone!!! Hurrah!!

Apart from the fact that equality means the erosion of rights from 50% of the population.

But let’s jump on the bandwagon of being cool and accepting....and not doing any research into the subject, for example how drugs that suppress puberty can result in life limiting side effects.

Let’s not talk about men convicted of rape who end up in women’s prisons or the medals won by men competing in women’s sport.

Agghh

This gives me less faith in writing to mine too!!

I’m thinking short and punchy in the hope of a response that doesn’t ignore the question. Eg. I was a victim of sexual abuse for a number of years as a child and am very worried about women’s spaces no longer being protected. How can I feel safe if men who say they want to be women, without any medical input, can go into those spaces where I often feel the most vulnerable (medical centres, changing rooms, public loos)?

Sweetheart with all you have been through I'm just going to shut up and listen to what you think.

Albadross · 22/10/2017 08:25

Would be better to help push one of the existing sites that has all the info already there? Maybe talk to them about repackaging some of the stuff (specifically the content aimed at concerned parents who are possibly our best audience)?

I have a YouTube channel too and I’d happily put something on there that was based on concise factual points that I can evidence. If people are concerned about jobs etc you can make audio only and show evidence as the visual bit to protect your identity. Ideally short and shareable!

Knusper · 22/10/2017 08:49

I feel embarrassed that I used to think they were just a bunch of bigots when they saw what was going on a lot sooner than I did.

Rumandraisin I feel the same. One day I allowed myself to question whether the 'bigots' might actually be right and couldn't unsee it afterwards.

Fair Play for Women has tons of good resources.

Definitely write to your MP. If it’s a sexist man ask about indecent exposure and sport. You don’t have to be erudite and articulate. Just ask the questions. Ask them to explain why, if statistically 37 people who show up at gender clinics will have gender dysphoria, 2000 of them showed up last year alone. Most of them girls.

Send a letter in the post as well as email. Say in the email that you’re sending a hard copy and say on the hard copy that you emailed. Sometimes emails get ‘lost’, but in this day and age, an actual piece of paper is harder to ignore.

Even if your MP is a complete dinosaur who you think won’t give a toss. Point out that 50% of their constituency is women. Who are now legally undefinable.

Be outraged. Stonewall include crossdressers, officially, under the heading transgender. Ask how that fits in with protecting women and girls from straight men, who are fully intact in terms of genitalia, and have a fetish.

The problem with all this is that unless you have something of a feminist lens, talking about gender as stereotypes goes over the head of a lot of people. Particularly for those for whom stereotypes are more beneficial (men) and have never had to think about it.

Ask them how they can be supporting legislation that will allow every paedophile in the country to identify as a woman and hang out in the female changing rooms during mother/toddler swim sessions, throughout the summer holidays, etc. And since it’s not a crime for woman to be naked, what safeguards would there be to prevent him from being so. Point out you’re not suggesting that transpeople are paedophiles, but obviously paedophiles can exploit this. And since they go to extraordinary risks and can spend years grooming child, why on earth wouldn’t they. So much easier, and legitimate, than hanging around swing parts and the school gates surreptitiously. (Seriously why havent they thought about this and how can they now backtrack).

Ask them if they support the #metoo campaign and why on earth they would think there are not numerous predators out there who would exploit this.

Especially as, and this is important, a man has to do nothing to be considered a woman. In terms of appearance. Show them the picture of Daniel Muscato who tweeted from a woman’s homeless shelter, deliberately on International Women’s Day that if you don’t believe he’s a woman you can suck his dick.

Asking why they are expecting women and girls to share their intimate spaces with men who threaten rape.

I'm in!!!! I've already outed myself as a TERF on social media. I'm actually feeling a little blue atm as I've taken a real battering this week on social media. Interestingly though I had people pming me support that were grateful I was speaking up. People WANT to be able to show support they're just scared.

I once thought the "pregnant people" thing was a clumsy attempt at inclusivity that would not achieve wider use.

However, I was wrong. In today's Times:

The government has said the term “pregnant woman” should not be used in a UN treaty because it “excludes” transgender people.

Feminists reacted with outrage to what they said was the latest example of “making women unmentionable” in the name of transgender equality.

The statement comes in Britain’s official submission on proposed amendments to the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which the UK has been a signatory since 1976. The UN treaty says a “pregnant woman” must be protected, including not being subject to the death penalty.

Yet in the Foreign and Commonwealth Office submission, Britain opposes the term “pregnant woman” because it may “exclude transgender people who have given birth”. The suggested term is “pregnant people”.

They need to define the word woman. It is an adult human female. It has a biological definition. It doesn’t matter if they identify as a man.

The word woman has a specific definition that is applicable every single case.

This is a breathtaking attempt to pretend it doesn’t.

Nickynackynoodle · 22/10/2017 14:04

One idea if you're writing to a male MP is to look at what his wife does.

My MP's wife is in the association of women's Barristers so I knew I could stimulate his critical thinking by asking why she might think it necessary to have such an association.

He hasn't drunk the kool aid tho so I was pushing at an open door.

bambambini · 22/10/2017 14:05

I think the battle has been lost (legally) on the definition of "woman" and it is a social rather than biological classification now. I think this whole issue needs to unfold further to "trans women are women" with full inclusion before there will be a backlash. It's going to take cases like a male winning Wimbledon ladies final or women's 100m olympic final, Ian Huntley being moved to a women's prison.

Scabbersley · 22/10/2017 14:09

So can women who identify as men now inherit under primageniture?

TheRollingCrone · 22/10/2017 14:11

Thank you for whoever linked fairplayforwomen some really accessible articles for me and my dd. This stuff makes me worry for her future.

rubybleu · 22/10/2017 14:12

My MP is Jeremy Corbyn so I may as well not waste the stamp Hmm

MagdalenLaundry · 22/10/2017 14:12

No that is the only exception Hmm

MagdalenLaundry · 22/10/2017 14:12

That was to Scabbersley

rubybleu · 22/10/2017 14:14

Scabbersley no, because women can’t actually turn into men according to the House of Lords. Only men can become women, and I’m pretty sure a transgender MTF would still inherit.

bambambini · 22/10/2017 14:48

Regarding the male inheritance thing - if a TM contested it legally - i wonder how it would play out.

rubybleu · 22/10/2017 14:52

Primogeniture has been deliberately carved out of the Gender Recognition Act.

Section 16 states: 'The fact that a person's gender has become the acquired gender under this Act (a) does not affect the descent of any peerage or dignity or title of honour, and (b) does not affect the devolution of any property.'

Scabbersley · 22/10/2017 15:01

We'll have to wait for someone to contest it. I can't see why they wouldn't win. They changed it for the royals!

Lemonjello · 22/10/2017 16:11

The fact that primogeniture is exempt shows everything though. The things that men care about are protected. The things women care about are dismissed.

busyboysmum · 22/10/2017 16:15

It shows that it's bullshit and they don't believe it's true or there would be no exemptions.

Datun · 22/10/2017 17:39

We need six or seven women to go to every gentleman’s club in Saint James’. It would be useful if a couple of them had a babe in arms. Crying relentlessly. Which necessitates a lot of shushing.

We all have male names and we identify as men. But obviously, we wear female clothing.

We politely ask for any documentation we need to fill out in terms of an application.

We point out that we have family members who are members of the club who want to propose us (to circumvent the inevitable, but you have to be proposed and seconded).

We speculate that we could, of course, chestfeed our babies in the lounge or dining room, but would also like to see the other facilities they have dedicated to feeding infants. White cotton tops and leaking breasts would effectively illustrate this necessity. Which should be immediately pointed out as we’ve heard how progressive this club is, given every political party’s support of new transgender rights.

We ask about overnight accommodation and where the sanitary bins and sanpro dispensing machines are.

The two of us who have toddlers, would like to know what kindergarten provision they provide. If they have none, we helpfully and enthusiastically discuss how we can fund raise.

We look at the dark green decor and have a loud, aside conversation extolling the virtues of chintz.

We tut and snigger (loudly) over the never ending oil paintings of men and discuss the inclusion of Germaine Greer and Linda Bellos.

We look askance at The Times, Telegraph and Financial Times on the coffee table and ask if they subscribe to Hello Magazine and Bella.

We call every newspaper in the country before we go and let them know what’s happening.

Have I missed anything?
