It's fascinating to see how people behave in the company of power and status and influence. Those beautiful and famous women pictured fawning all over him were not attracted to his looks were they?

NotAgainYoda · 15/10/2017 15:07

Is this what we do now?

poppl · 15/10/2017 15:14

Codeine what the fuck is that vile photo supposed to prove?

Are you trying to accuse the women of lying??

HerOtherHalf · 15/10/2017 15:17

However I fully agree that some women, probably the ones who are staying quiet, entered into consensual relationships with him in the hopes their careers would be boosted.

That may be consensual in legal terms but morally it leaves the man no better than those who use prostitutes. There is a deeper problem at the root. You can just about count successful female hollywood actors over 40 on your fingers. The industry still sees them primarily as eye candy with no real purpose other than to play the sex love interest to the leading man. Even when the leading man is an actor in his 60s ( e.g. Willis, Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Pacino etc etc) the leading lady is rarely much over 30. This means that women are not only underrepresented but those that do make it are very aware how vulnerable and time-limited their careers are. I doubt anything much will change until we as consumers start voting with our wallets.

How can a sexual relationship with HW and an unestablished young actress be consensual?

How can a sexual relationship with HW and an unestablished young actress be consensual?

Note Joss Whedon. They're all at it.

AmericanPastoral · 15/10/2017 15:50

I'm surprised more hasn't been made of Ben Affleck's actions

CodeineAndCornflakes · 15/10/2017 15:53

poppl No, of course I don't think they are lying about Harvey Weinstein being a sexual predator. He undoubtedly used his influence and position of authority in Hollywood to get what he wanted from young, up and coming actresses. I'm not disputing that, the man is a predatory pervert.

All I am pointing out is that it feels disingenuous for the floodgates to now open with A-List, well established and powerful celebrities talk about how traumatic their experiences were, when for years and years after the assaults, they've willingly remained in his company. They will have known he was doing the same "disturbing, traumatic" things to the next young and unknown actresses desperate for fame at any cost as he did to them, yet chose to remain silent all these years. Yes, the blame lies solely with him.
But they had the power to stop this, yet chose not to. It's been a long time since these women were the vulnerable, unknown girls who felt they couldn't refuse his advances. They have influence, fame, the respect of their fans, and would have had access to the best counsellors, lawyers and agencies that money can buy to get people to listen. They had a voice and ability to shine a light on this man for years.
HW has had a reputation as a prolific abuser of his power for at least 20years, wasn't Courtney Love speaking out back in the 90s about this?
If someone had just put their safety and that of other future nameless girls before their career, countless other victims might not have had to suffer for the last few decades.

AmericanPastoral · 15/10/2017 15:53

More from Ben Affleck's back catalogue

brilliantslight · 15/10/2017 15:55

I agree HerOtherHalf we need to make a stand and boycott all films that unecessarily match older men and younger women and film companies complicit in this abuse of power. Perhaps we should make a petition/ list and start today.

TheRollingCrone · 15/10/2017 16:07

I think a young actress on C4 news put it perfectly "there's a desperation around the acting/movie business". Men like HW are truly omnipotent, women, minorities are really scrabbling for roles and the next role... He absolutely exploited that fear - and women did try to speak out and were shut down.
Even actors with gravitas and agency knew that man could destroy life, career, marriages. I say again the unusual silence of men in this is stomach churning. I admire all of the actors who have been violated by HW and have spoken out.

OhOhDearling · 15/10/2017 16:07

what happened when somebody did report him to the police:-

NameChanger22 · 15/10/2017 16:09

I think he got away with it for so long, because nobody with any power and influence cared much what he was up to.

I think it's all come light now because HW has upset someone; someone he should have stayed on the right side of. I think that's the reason he's showing signs of remorse.

busyboysmum · 15/10/2017 16:14

Saw this on another site and it resonated with me. OP YANBU

To think loads of people in Hollywood knew about Harvey Weinstein and dont want to admit it?
brilliantslight · 15/10/2017 16:19

I agree NameChanger22. Someone pretty powerful, Government maybe? now have no need for HW and it was they who got the ball rolling and not the women involved.

CodeineAndCornflakes · 15/10/2017 16:26

Over the weekend, The Academy of Motion Pictures has voted well in excess of the 2/3rds majority to expel Weinstein.
Whoopi Goldberg is a prominent member of the Academy.

She was also one of the 100+ celebrities who spoke in defence of her friend Roman Polanski after was jailed for drugging and having sex with a 13 year old girl.
This was her statement on the incident.

"I know it wasn't 'rape' rape. I think it was something else, but I don't believe it was 'rape' rape."

I agree with you NameChanger, even rape of a minor (Polanski) and marrying your own adopted Daughter (Woody Allen) doesn't get you thrown out of favour in Hollywood. HW must have really pissed off the wrong person for this to publicly ruin him.

poppl · 15/10/2017 16:35

Codeine I think you absolutely are victim blaming.

The whole point is that HW made and destroyed careers. Even big name actors can have fast and spectacular falls. What he did was his fault and not the fault of the women who felt that they couldn’t speak out.

brilliantslight · 15/10/2017 16:35

I wonder whether it is as PP said a distractor so the Government can get on with other 'stuff'.

poppl · 15/10/2017 16:41

Dismissing the whole thing as a conspiracy just goes even further to undermine the importance and seriousness of this whole issue

derxa · 15/10/2017 16:45

Dismissing the whole thing as a conspiracy just goes even further to undermine the importance and seriousness of this whole issue Yes how true.

NameChanger22 · 15/10/2017 16:49

Not dismissing it as a conspiracy, rather explaining it. Of course the issue is important and serious.

CodeineAndCornflakes · 15/10/2017 16:49

Poppl I've said in two separate posts that the blame lies solely with HW and his vile abuse of power, not the victims of it.

poppl · 15/10/2017 16:52

Yes and there was a big old BUT after that statement

Rather undermines it

Olaf4fuxache · 15/10/2017 16:53

Would not be at all surprised if soon:......."was found dead at a hotel in xxxxx today.foul play is not suspected/no suspicious circumstances......blah blah blah"
Kind regards
Olaf

brilliantslight · 15/10/2017 17:01

I'm not saying it is a conspiracy at all. I am saying that it seems bizarre that NOW is the time for this to come out. It doesn't add up that is all.
