all the shock and horror is getting on my nerves, are they really telling us this guy hit on loads of the woman there and was abusive towards them and no one talked about it?

sheesh

@Whiskey2014

Lucky you if that is the case for you dear! Many women would definitely disagree with you on THAT one.
bing bong but if that is the case then he is a HW and you go to the police...or you should otherwise you end up with this shit storm.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 15/10/2017 10:57

However I fully agree that some women, probably the ones who are staying quiet, entered into consensual relationships with him in the hopes their careers would be boosted.

They weren't exactly consensual though, were they? Were those women attracted to HW? Did they want to rip his clothes off? Perhaps the odd one. I suspect more that they gave in to sex with him through fear and pressure, given his immense power over their careers and reputations.

derxa · 15/10/2017 11:19

Once again, sorry to ask, how come Harvey Weinstein is only being clobbered now? Because the hits have dried up and he's dispensable now. It's all about money. -
Side note: I loved Gretchen Mol in Boardwalk Empire. Such a good actress.

Ratonastick · 15/10/2017 11:32

I think Glenn's anecdote above says it all. If you challenge these guys (and we have all crossed paths with them at some point), your career / earnings / life will be adversely impacted. In Hollywood, every one of those actresses is self employed and only as good as their last box office hit/flop, even the big names, just look at how many oscar winners have never been in another hit. People like Weinstein are incredibly powerful and can end careers on a whim and they make sure the women know it. It's noticeable that the women who did make a fuss, like Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan, didn't have the career success that their early films etc suggested.

I think it was an open secret between women, just like in offices we tell each other to avoid the sleaze. We know we can't do anything about it, so we warn each other and try and manage the situation to keep ourselves safe. Then the floodgates open and we all speak up, then men say this can't be true, why did no one say anything. Which perpetuates the behaviour of the rest of the sleazy fuckers.

I'm afraid I am firmly of the view that HWs behaviour was very well known. It was a ticking bomb and now someone more powerful than him has decided it is time for him to go, so they lit the fuse.

Thingvellir · 15/10/2017 11:34

"The office sleaze doesn't DO anything"

We have an office sleaze. He has not, to my knowledge, done anything physical to anyone but what he does do is stare at female colleagues as they walk around the office, speak to their cleavage and very obviously mentally undress them while they talk to him about work stuff. It's not nothing, I dread having to talk to him and he makes me very uncomfortable. I'm considerably more senior than he is as well. This guy has just been promoted and a couple of female colleagues have approached me (I am the most senior woman in our area) to say he makes them uncomfortable and that they don't want to have to work with him in his new role. I've asked each of them to bring me a specific example, so I can do something, and guided them on what they may say. Without a concrete example I don't feel I can do much. In the meantime, we all try and avoid him.

I don't think that counts as 'doing nothing' though, even though I don't feel he can be 'pinned down' yet.

megletthesecond · 15/10/2017 11:39

Of course they all knew, I bloody knew. I'm a middle aged mum in the UK and the gossip sites have covered this for a decade.

derxa · 15/10/2017 11:44

Were those women attracted to HW? Strangely I believe that more than you think were attracted to him.

User843022 · 15/10/2017 11:45

'Silly question, but how come Harvey is only just getting clobbered now after dozens of actors and stars said he was a pervy letch 10, 15, 20 years ago?'

Didn't the brother want rid of him so that's how it's all conveniently in the news? I don't care how he's been outed though, let's hope this has a knock on effect and all those who sexually harass daily realise they can't get away with it.

ssd · 15/10/2017 11:45

should have gone to specsavers then

Weinstein is now truly fucked. According to that fountain of knowledge the DM(spit) Woody Allen has come out in support and said HW is "sad".

If the only person supporting you is the man who married his adopted step daughter...............

BriechonCheese · 15/10/2017 11:51

I don't see how Americans aren't out in the street daily, protesting and rioting about the accusations levied at their President (even admissions from his own mouth) in a similar vein.

Oh yes, forgive me, it's because women are the victims.

Youcanstayundermyumbrella · 15/10/2017 11:52

Hahaha. Trump admitted to his groping and they still elected him. I doubt he's too worried. We live in a fucked-up world where an admitted sexual predator can be the American President. Says it all really about how much women matter.

LeavesinAutumn · 15/10/2017 11:56

What on earth is being in the right on lefty environment got to do with anything, am I missing point? I personally know of one rabid lefty would never cote for anyone else sleeze and on here poster has recounted many times the misogyny in the labour party and left papers she has encountered. Surely this is a political?

So he got dumped from the Academy. I wonder how many people weighing in on HW deserve the same fate. Bet they're glad the spotlight is off them for the time being.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/10/2017 13:24

Just read Woody Allen's full statement he is concerned there will be a witchhunt and men will be in trouble for just winking at a women in the office and labelled

Surely he should be pleased someone has been caught and this gives a platform for other women to openly talk about what they have been through and that could hopefully lead to convictions and a stop to women being harassed in the workplace

Unless he is concerned about himself Hmm

EachandEveryone · 15/10/2017 13:29

His son exposed it all.

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 15/10/2017 13:44

Yes Ronan Farrow thankfully has very different opinions to his father

And I think it was HW that's saved his fathers career when he wasn't so popular no surprise there having read his opinion of Roman Polanski

WhatsWineGotToDoWithIt · 15/10/2017 14:02

I read in Goldie Hawn’s book “No mud no lotus” that she had a similar thing happen to her in 60s with a casting guy in a hotel room with his dressing gown on. She didn’t fall for it but it shows it’s nothing new..

CodeineAndCornflakes · 15/10/2017 14:26

Hollywood is a hotbed of depravity. HW will just be the tip of the iceberg.
Look at the list of celebrities who spoke out in support for Roman Polanski after he sodomized a 13 year old girl; Whoopi Goldberg, Woody Allen surprise surprise, Tilda Swinton, Adrien Brody...I think 100 Hollywood celebrities signed a petition to have him released.

However I fully agree that some women, probably the ones who are staying quiet, entered into consensual relationships with him in the hopes their careers would be boosted.

I agree. All of a sudden these women are going public. Pity they didn't have the integrity to do that and protect younger, vulnerable girls from future trauma before the film roles started pouring in and they became established in their own right.

To think loads of people in Hollywood knew about Harvey Weinstein and dont want to admit it?
TVproducer2 · 15/10/2017 14:41

This kind of behaviour is very common in Hollywood. I lived there in the 1980's as a very young woman (and not an actress) and I had to put up with inappropriate behaviour from a number of powerful men. I also know other young women who were offered parts in tv shows if they were prepared to do sexual favours for such men. I think it exists here too. It's not all men by any stretch but it's certainly a number of them. I'd also add that it's not just men who are badly behaved. Some of the women I've worked with who are "stars" behave appallingly - not necessarily sexual abuse but behaviour that is vile and cruel.

Whisky2014 · 15/10/2017 14:42

I don't think that counts as 'doing nothing' though, even though I don't feel he can be 'pinned down' yet.

Well, if everyone it happened to reported it to HR or manager or even police, a case would be buit up wouldn't it? So I'd say that should be your first step in combating it, don't you?
