How to stop brexit and make Britain great again

So Nick Clegg has a new book out called How to stop brexit and make Britain great again.

Aibu to think its time to just get on with brexit and stop this uncertainty? It didn't work for the lib Dems at the ellection and it now seems like dragging it on for as long as possible will make the worst of a bad situation.

Thanks for bringing this book to my attention, op. I don't think that Brexit can be stopped unfortunately, but I have a lot of respect for any politician who is willing to speak the truth about this - it will be a disaster, no matter how many flags we wave. (What does "getting on with it entail??") There are so many others who know what a mistake it will be, yet refuse to admit it. The very least we could do is leave in a sensible way - instead te Brexiteers in power seem bent on economic suicide, based on a hell of a lot of extrapolation about what "the people wanted" from a simple one sentence question.

For pp who was moaning about NHS service - do you not think this could have anything at all to do with the underfunding of public services and changing demographics of the our country? We have an aging population and we aren't funding enough our NHS enough to cope. Social care is in an even worse state, yet your answer is to restrict the numbers of young taxpayers available to work in care homes and the NHS?

Still, at least those who are already very, very wealthy will be in a good position to snap up assets if the economy crashes. Eventually the country will pick itself up again (might take a few decades) so there is an opportunity to do very well out of such investments. Bit shit for the rest of us who rely on jobs and have mortgages/rent to pay, but hey as long as the rich get richer this Brexit will be worth it, wont it?

maxthemartian · 10/10/2017 08:53

I suspect if we leave with no deal and go onto WTC rules the UK will wind up becoming a tax haven for the mega rich with a severe decline in living standards for the rest of us. In fact possibly this was the plan all along.

midnightmisssuki · 10/10/2017 08:53

... but you cant stop Brexit though can you? Not sure why he's brought out a book to give people false hope?

JayDot500 · 10/10/2017 08:57

Fecking Brexit Angry

Feel like I'm being forced to hope I'm wrong and it'll all pan out smoothly. However, I find it hard to delude myself. Our government (all sides) is a joke, and now the 52% want us all to be absolutely at their mercy.

HipToBeSquare · 10/10/2017 09:01

I know Jay, it was so close it really doesn't seem fair not to have another referendum now that the bullshit has been scraped away.

If it turned out that 52% wanted it again then I would 100% accept that.

Flyingflipflop · 10/10/2017 09:12

... but you cant stop Brexit though can you? Not sure why he's brought out a book to give people false hope?

I agree. If we stop Brexit now, what would be the ramifications? The EU would push for ever greater integration and make sure we didn't have any vetoes.

One thing the vote showed is there is huge scepticism about the EU and that would just get worse if we got stopped Brexit.

I think it's better to get on with it and get it over and done with. Unfortunately we don't have any competent politicians (from any party) to do it.

JayDot500 · 10/10/2017 09:16

@Hip I've never really been convinced about a second referendum but I'd welcome one now, given how hopeless talks with the EU are looking. Plus our saviour, the USA, are fixing to disappoint us. If there was a second chance referendum or something where the public could contribute a voice to this mess, I want comprehensive facts! I want forecasts and outlooks for all sectors and regions. I want MPs to be allowed to speak honestly without fear of the whip. I want a true picture of Brexit, for both outcome.

Wait, I can't continue to delude myself,
There really is no painless way to clean up this stinky shite the referendum expelled Angry

allegretto · 10/10/2017 09:23

Blahblahbloo - you do realize that EU migrants actually pay more in than tgey get out in Welfare? We will be facing big losses and the Nhs will have severe shortages ince out of the EU. Why is that a good thing?

Theworldisfullofidiots · 10/10/2017 09:26

Read about disaster capitalism and then you won't be do optimistic. I would leave if it was possible.
And The issue is not just getting on with brexit its consent. Quite a lot of people did not consent to this in any way whatsoever so therefore they are angry. (Its not a little change, it's massive).
Some people consented and now have changed their minds (think the instant regret) or don't like this version of brexit (think those from vote leave who are kicking off all over twitter). That leaves a very small group who are happy with hard brexit. So that's a lot of people who feel liked they have been fucked and no one cares.
In a few years people will deny how they voted.

allegretto · 10/10/2017 09:27

Every day there is news about how another bank or institution is leaving the UK, hpw the Nhs is in crisis, how prices will definitely increase and still I have yet to hear any reasoned solution from any leavers beyond "think positive". 😂😂 Is

makeourfuture · 10/10/2017 09:32

why do they get to vote again until they get it right but we don't

This seems to cause a lot of confusion. The answer is that nothing is ever really over.

makeourfuture · 10/10/2017 09:34

The EU would push for ever greater integration and make sure we didn't have any vetoes

We can instead lead.

Why not?

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 10/10/2017 09:38

post

Same with dr apts where i live, 6/8 weeks for an appointment

Nothing to do with immigration in this village at least

Blahblahboo · 10/10/2017 09:41

I don't mean the ones who work, I mean the migrants who come and live on welfare and never get a job.
That is the immigration we need to stop because it can't be supported

Blahblahboo · 10/10/2017 09:44

Furthermore we need an American/ Australian type of immigration policy where you HAVE to already have a job to go to. You CANT have access to any benefits until you have paid in for so many years and where if you have any criminal past you simply aren't allowed in. Of course too we need the clause that if while here they commit a crime then there is no ifs or buts, immediately deported .

Theworldisfullofidiots · 10/10/2017 09:45

peterjnorth.blogspot.co.uk/2017/10/i-dont-like-this-brexit-but-i-will-live.html?m=1
And this is written by someone who campaigned and fought for leave. I despair.

RandomlyGenerated · 10/10/2017 09:48

I want forecasts and outlooks for all sectors

The Government has produced reports on the impact of Brexit on various UK sectors - but won’t publish them.

MorbidBibliomancy · 10/10/2017 09:48

Last I heard Britain was still a Democratic. So you anti-Brexit people lost. Maybe you should concentrate on how to make Britain "great again" yourselves, instead of constantly moaning and whinging cause you lost?

I keep seeing this sentiment bandied about. 'Your side lost so you have to stop whining!'

But the thing is, yes we do live in a democracy. That means that dissenting political opinions are allowed and encouraged. There's nothing that decrees that if your 'side' doesn't win you have to shut up about the whole thing. I voted Remain because I believe it was the right thing to do. I still think it's the right thing. So yes, I am going to carry on dissenting, as is my right as a citizen of a democratic country.

I can accept that Leave won. I don't have to accept the idea that this was the right move.

user1471448556 · 10/10/2017 09:50

Everyone I speak to thinks Brexit is a disaster. Even leavers aren't happy with the way things are going. The sooner we revoke article 50, the better. We're never going to get a better 'deal' than the one we had. Looking forward to reading Clegg's book.

80sMum · 10/10/2017 09:55

Blahblahboo - "I voted to leave and it can't come soon enough. I'm sick of having to listen to Brussels with all the stupid rules and regulations and we seriously need to stop immigration . We can't afford to support them all and our own on welfare, our NHS can't take the strain "

The problem with the NHS has very little, if anything, to do with immigration. In fact, I would go so far as to say that immigration has been propping up the NHS for some considerable time. The real problem is far more complex than immigration. It includes:
The NHS is operating at staggering levels of inefficiency.
There is no continuity of care, resulting in people having nowhere to go when they are fit enough to be discharged from hospital but not yet fit enough to return to independent life.
There is too much emphasis on treatment instead of prevention.
There are far more people living into very old age now than did a few decades ago - and that means a greater use of the services by the older members of society.
Obesity has sky-rocketed in recent years, resulting in a huge increase in diabetes and other illnesses directly related to diet and lifestyle. The NHS spends vastly more on diabetes treatment now than it did a few decades ago.

I could go on, but you get the picture.

Shiftymake · 10/10/2017 10:02

Check out Pete North, he is in the Leave team, peterjnorth.blogspot.co.uk. Think he clinging to straws with remaining an adhering leave supporter, but personally thinking that when/if Brexit kicks in I will be thinking of my child's wellbeing and leaving the UK to spare dc this kind of disadvantage and life.

PortiaCastis · 10/10/2017 10:03

We have to wait for a drs appt for up to three weeks and we're not a diverse area quite the opposite in fact. Thing is 3 of the 5 GPs at the local practice have retired and the practice have been unable to recruit to replace them due to an acute shortage of GPs

allegretto · 10/10/2017 10:05

Blahblahboo - what you say is what you want is what we had with the EU. I despair!

stripysleeves · 10/10/2017 10:05

I don't mean the ones who work, I mean the migrants who come and live on welfare and never get a job.
That is the immigration we need to stop because it can't be supported

You do realise, that that's not what's happening don't you?

The cost of capping migration and leaving the EU will be to make us ALL a lot worse off. If it's money you're worried about, you really shouldn't support Brexit.

We are all going to be a lot poorer. Except those at the top who will continue to maniplate things for their advantage - just like their papers have manipulated you into thinking that somehow, if we stop migration the country will be better off.

It won't. We've cut off our nose to spite our face. It's a truly idiotic move.

We are all feeling the pinch right now because of austerity, which has NOTHING to do with immigration or there not being enough money to go round. It will get worse after Brexit.

There is plenty of money, but it's being syphoned off as profit for friends of those in power.

Austerity isn't necessary - it's what the Tories have publicly stated they wanted to do for years. They believe in a small state (so no NHS, no benefits, no workers protections). They're not making cuts because there's not enough money to go round because the immigrants cost us too much money. That's bullshit fed to you by the media.

They are cutting libraries, surestart centres, benefits meant to provide a safety net for the most vulnerable in our society including disabled people and children not because they HAVE to but because they want to. Austerity / migration are just their latest excuses to do what they want, given out for people who don't question more than the newspaper headlines.

Don't be one of those people. They're taking the piss out of you!

RandomlyGenerated, yes I'm aware of the list, and just in case anyone misunderstands your post let's be clear that this list is not called myths for nothing.
