How to stop brexit and make Britain great again

So Nick Clegg has a new book out called How to stop brexit and make Britain great again.

Aibu to think its time to just get on with brexit and stop this uncertainty? It didn't work for the lib Dems at the ellection and it now seems like dragging it on for as long as possible will make the worst of a bad situation.

What I find curious is all the impoverished areas of the UK that that have been refurbished and improved by EU money and the residents are so grateful that their town isn't a 'hole' anymore that they voted to leave.
There is NO WAY that the existing EU countries will coalesce into one superstate. French will always be French, German Italian and so on likewise. Traveling across Europe you see some of the benefits of being 'joined'. Zipping across a former border from Holland into Germany at 110Km/H where there were former currency exchange booths and massive vehicle parks for passport and duty checks.
The risk of war between the 27 members is near unthinkable.
Which countries are represented by the bloodlines of the Royal family?
As I said previously practically all 'EU regulations' were approved by British politicians, they could have vetoed things 'we' didn't like, or simply kick implementing them into the long grass for a decade or so but they have chosen to implement and enforce.
The news today that 2000 BAE Systems staff are to lose their jobs is just the start.

Fresh8008 · 10/10/2017 22:26

Willowy, yes if we have to go back (and are accepted) to the EU I agree we should adopt the Euro. It always felt wrong being in the EU but always holding them back, being the disagreeable family member, always having to get special arrangements because we had a tantrum.

We should either be out or fully in.

Willowy · 10/10/2017 22:27

Outabout - it’s devastating that BAD are to cut jobs. I live very near warton where 750 jobs are to go. It will be damaging to the local economy (but there’s always a career in fracking Hmm). Are we really starting as we mean to go on? I really hope not Sad

Willowy · 10/10/2017 22:30

Fresh - I actually thought it was a good move that we kept the pound as opposed to going for the Euro. Don’t think I’d like to adopt it if we re-entered. If we had to get the EU to prop us up in future, it will all have been an exercise in futility.

Willowy · 10/10/2017 22:31

BAE not bad @outabout

Fresh8008 · 10/10/2017 22:31

Theworldisfullofidiots
it's a massive risk
And one we should never have been taken into without agreement from the population. You can't force people into something and complain when they resist. It was only ever going to get worse, the boil needed to be lanced.

HateIsNotGood · 10/10/2017 22:39

Erm...outabout because most of the refurbs are cosmetic and don't really create jobs as such; just a short-term injection of money that really only benefit those already in situ in the local hierarchies.

I'm speaking from the SW, where lots of EU funding has gone but the benefits hardly roll out to the local population. Also, in the little ancient corner I live in, it's supposed to be racist according to the social policists.

Yet, two Roma households have moved in with ease - because like knows like - and Brexit or not, most here understand the harshness of life and think, you made it before the gate closed, you are here. Welcome to the life we live and better here than the other places you could have lived in the UK.

Fresh8008 · 10/10/2017 22:40

the impoverished areas of the UK that that have been refurbished and improved by EU money

Umm it wasn't EU money it was UK money.

Fresh8008 · 10/10/2017 22:48

There is NO WAY that the existing EU countries will coalesce into one superstate
And you know that how? Is there no plans for tax harmonization, a central army, central laws, ever closer integration! Yea French will always be French, the way Cornish will always be Cornish, just all in the same USofEU.

The risk of war between the 27 members is near unthinkable
Tell Spain that, where civil war is currently being debated on TV.

practically all 'EU regulations' were approved by British politicians
So what? Democracy means people can say the politicians have done the wrong thing and we want it changed. Just like we have.

The news today that 2000 BAE Systems staff are to lose their jobs is just the start

Which no UK news channel is claiming has anything to do with Brexit.

outabout · 10/10/2017 22:50

The BAE issue is only the tip. 2000 directly but as the unions are largely correct in saying, around 4 or 5 times this number of workers from external suppliers are at great risk. These jobs are not the 'burger flippers' but serious hi tech jobs. It is business that determines many aspects of this escapade and the uncertainty and lying that has gone on (by politicians) will persuade many companies that we can't be trusted and so will move elsewhere.
Yes the EU needed change but you do that by being a member and negotiate skillfully.
The Euro is simply currency. Losing the pound in preference to Euro coinage means very little especially as so many transactions are done by cards of some form.

HateIsNotGood · 10/10/2017 22:53

Yep, like I said, no one gives a fuck about the people tucked away down here and all the other places far removed from Londinium.

We were ignored and you got Brexit, continue to ignore us and your debates continue to be worthless.

Theworldisfullofidiots · 10/10/2017 23:06

I'm not in London. I'm in the worst funded area in the country for almost everything.
I voted remain because I knew brexit would be a disaster for public services.
Funding for schools was withdrawn the day after brexit. Most people didn't notice. At the end of this year we will be making staff redundant. We are not anticipating that it will be getting any better. No TAs next year.
If it carries on we will have mixed year groups of over 30. We are not profligate. This is Austerity and brexit.
I feel absolutely ignored as a remain voter. If I try and engage my mp I get ignored because of the will of the people. Even my mp won't represent half his constituents now or listen to their concerns

Theworldisfullofidiots · 10/10/2017 23:07

When I say over 30 think 40 in a class

Fresh8008 · 10/10/2017 23:12

The BAE issue is only the tip
Its nothing to do with Brexit. However outside the EU we possibly stand a better chance of getting more defense orders for BAE.

outabout · 10/10/2017 23:17

If the local contractors and others did not use the EU money wisely and effectively then that is hardly the EUs fault.
I thought it was match funded anyway.
Civil war is not inter country war. While greatly regrettable there have always been areas of great tension. Maybe the Madrid government should address the way they interact with the Catalunyan and Basque regions.
I see the Airbus 'Beluga' carrying new airplane wings South each day, that also risks being stopped. The world is global and big business won't stay where there is uncertainty.

stripysleeves · 10/10/2017 23:18

Until you realize that the majority of voters don't believe the scare stories

What are you going to do when the penny drops that they're not scare stories?

GretchenFranklin · 10/10/2017 23:57

I live in a Leave area. In a town full of chavs (sorry rude I know but I'm using shorthand).

Nobody fucking votes. Council elections, by-elections, even a General Election, it's like tumbleweed blowing through my area.

This referendum ships up and the chavs (again sorry I know how rude that is) are queuing outside the Polling Station with their anti immigrant vote.

I know there is a proper argument for leaving the EU (possibly but not now imo), but in truth, this is a vote taken mainly by bigots with little education and literally the loosest understanding of European history - where I live at any rate.

BowlingShoes · 11/10/2017 00:03

in 5 years the cost will have been saved in contributions.

Our contributions to the EU cannot be measured in this way. We have paid into the EU for 40 years largely because of the benefits to our economy. Although they are difficult to quantify, the CBI estimates that the net benefit of EU membership is worth 4-5% of GDP to the UK, or £62bn-£78bn per year. Bear in mind that our net contributions are approximately £8.6bn.

I can't get over how many people seem to think that the EU takes money from us and we don't get any benefit from it. It would have been helpful if the shambolic remain campaign could have made this a bit clearer at the time.

Don't forget we are also going to have a huge exit bill to pay to cover our existing commitments and liabilities.

Fresh8008 · 11/10/2017 00:08

Civil war is not inter country war
and yet the EU stands by and does bugger all, so what use is it?

What are you going to do when the penny drops that they're not scare stories?

What are you going to do when the penny drops that the EU will create ever closer union?

Theworldisfullofidiots · 11/10/2017 06:18

Do you know at this current time I'd prefer it to the shower we've got running the country at the moment. And I'd never of thought I'd say that. Also cannot see it getting any better.
And God help us if Rees-mog or his ilk get their hands on front line power rather than sniping from the back row.

shopthenewcollection · 11/10/2017 07:24

What do we do we think of Theresa May's hesitation of how she would vote if the referendum were held now? I want her to break down and say it's all been a huge mistake and that we have to halt the whole sorry business right now. Feel so depressed about it and getting worse by the day seemingly.

MyOtherProfile · 11/10/2017 07:42

I listened to her hesitating and I just thought there she goes again. She can't say yes I supported remain and still do cos she's backing brexit now. She can't switch and say brexit cos that makes her look dumb. She just isn't strong enough to stand up and say enough so she gives those patronising answers with those little snide sniggers "oh I don't answer hypothetical questions" while at the same time constantly having to remind listeners she is the prime minister because she knows nobody really believed she's doing a good job.

Rufustherenegadereindeer1 · 11/10/2017 07:50

shop

Just watching the bbc morning news show thingy they do
