How to stop brexit and make Britain great again

So Nick Clegg has a new book out called How to stop brexit and make Britain great again.

Aibu to think its time to just get on with brexit and stop this uncertainty? It didn't work for the lib Dems at the ellection and it now seems like dragging it on for as long as possible will make the worst of a bad situation.

I think if you want to question Brexit based on false promises then you are on thin ground with any and every vote! Shall we talk about writing off student loans?

BowlingShoes · 09/10/2017 21:45

Nick Clegg is one of the most knowledgeable people on the subject, having actually worked on trade negotiations for the EU. That will of course mean that most of the people who voted for Brexit won't want to listen to him.

Chickenkatsu · 09/10/2017 21:51

I pre-ordered the book too, thanks for advertising it. I'm thinking of joining the Liberal Democrats, I'd never support Rees-Mogg or McDonnell.

Sgtmajormummy · 09/10/2017 22:01

I'll just leave this here. MN is the ideal audience. Prepare your ambiguity filters...

BifsWif · 09/10/2017 22:04

You know the NHS would collapse without migrant workers, don't you blah?

Which rules made by the EU do you hate so much, exactly?

PortiaCastis · 09/10/2017 22:16

I was in hospital for a couple of months earlier this year and yes most of the staff were from other Countries but I didn't care as they were caring for me A lovely Portuguese doctor saved my life and obviously I'm extremely grateful to him and his team who were from all over the world but very hard working lovely people.

Chickenkatsu · 09/10/2017 22:20

I wonderful Italian doctor saved my DD

PrincessLeia80 · 09/10/2017 22:25

BifsWif only 5.5% of NHS staff are from the EU. BowlingShoes yes clegg was involved in EU trade deals along with every MEP no more an authority than any other MEP and I'm sure you won't be suggesting the same of Nigel Farage

thecatfromjapan · 09/10/2017 22:28

I thought Nick Clegg's worked within the EU before becoming an MP, so his experience is far greater than that of someone like Farge who rarely even turned up ?

sinceyouask · 09/10/2017 22:28

Yabu. Why just get on with something that is only going to be awful? Why not have the guts to step back and reconsider?

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2017 22:30

ONLY 5.5%? Only? More than 1 in 20 of the staff are from the EU. And another 6.5% from other countries. And I bet in an average front line setting in a city it’s a lot higher.

sonlypuppyfat · 09/10/2017 22:46

What's wrong with foreign doctors etc? Nothing. It's all the car washers and spud pickers I think we can do without

Theworldisfullofidiots · 09/10/2017 22:47

Brexit is decades of gloom and doom. Especially as it looks like we are going for no Deal. WTO disaster here we come.
Anyone who thinks it's a good idea should read the World Bank Assessment.

Blahblahboo · 09/10/2017 22:48

Working immigrants are a very good thing. It's the ones who don't that cost us and as our country is already struggling we can't afford to fubd more let alone supply housing.

PortiaCastis · 09/10/2017 22:49

Who's going to pick the spuds though?

Blahblahboo · 09/10/2017 22:51

All I know is our NHS is struggling with the influx and something needs to be done. I already can't get a drs appointment before three months as it is and more gps are closing.

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2017 22:52

There’s nothing wrong with foreign doctors, that’s my point. Without them the NHS is going to suffer. Actually restricted movement might be good for other countries since they’ll be able to keep their doctors and nurses. And potato pickers for that matter.

PortiaCastis · 09/10/2017 22:52

This is very informative

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2017 22:54

If 6% of the UK population is EU nationals and 5.5% of the NHS staff are... isn’t it pretty much a zero sum game? Don’t the numbers mean you’ll end up with just as stretched an NHS with or without? In fact I’m willing to bet EU immigrants are more likely to be younger and therefore need the NHS less.

Who do you think dug the spuds up before we had people coming over willing to sleep loads to a house so they could be paid a pittance

Theworldisfullofidiots · 09/10/2017 23:00

Actually restricting movement of doctors is crap for small European countries. We had agreements with them for some of their doctors to come here and complete their junior doctor training and fill our rotas. That's collapsing now and going.
Also no taking part in large scale drugs trials in the future as we won't be part of the European meds agency. We will be considered too small to participate.
And no one knows how we are going to solve the eurotrom issue, so we're happy to put nuclear safety at risk, apart from the fact it's going to massively effect radiology treatment for cancer and I'm not even going to mention the fact we already don't have enough medical physicists.
Does Mumsnet have an emoticon for a facepalm?

MrsTerryPratchett · 09/10/2017 23:00

My dad did @sonlypuppyfat He used to do the tatty roguing as a teenager. He voted remain.

PortiaCastis · 09/10/2017 23:00

Point is who would want to do the picking if eu citizens return home

Bombardier25966 · 09/10/2017 23:02

It's all the car washers and spud pickers I think we can do without

The jobs that non migrant workers won't do? The farming community are very concerned at the potential loss of their core workforce.

It's the ones who don't that cost us and as our country is already struggling we can't afford to fubd more let alone supply housing

Under existing rules those that do not pass the HRT do not receive benefits. Someone arriving in the UK with no work will not qualify for assistance.

Our country is not struggling. We're the sixth richest nation in the world. Our government are strangling public services to make the majority think we're struggling.

I've (reluctantly) accepted that Brexit is happening, but am sick of people spilling out the same old lies. If you're going to lead our country into a shitstorm, at least do so based on fact and not the Daily Mail.
