How to stop brexit and make Britain great again

So Nick Clegg has a new book out called How to stop brexit and make Britain great again.

Aibu to think its time to just get on with brexit and stop this uncertainty? It didn't work for the lib Dems at the ellection and it now seems like dragging it on for as long as possible will make the worst of a bad situation.

Fresh8008 Civil war is not inter country war and yet the EU stands by and does bugger all, so what use is it?

Ah yes, another Brexiter who claims that the EU interferes too much in the sovereignty of member states then asks why they're not interfering in Spain.

Willowy · 11/10/2017 08:23

No one really knows what Outcome Brexit will look like hence their reluctance to back it (in the case of TM and others). It’s a complete omnishambles. Messing with a system and putting god only knows what in its place. It will bite many people on the arse. Hope the brexiters aren’t so smug when it does. This country needs to wake up.

@GretchenFranklin I hear what you’re saying completely. A lot of uneducated people I know never bother voting for anything then as soon as the referendum came around, probably the single most important vote in my lifetime, all the knuckledraggers and mouth breathers came out of the woodwork to vote leave. I’m not talking about people who voted leave who weighed up the ‘facts’ and thought long and hard about the (binary) choice. I’m talking about those who voted leave who are genuinely lacking in triple IQ figures.

I sound harsh. I don’t care. These people pretend to be ‘patriotic’ when it fucking suits them. They don’t give a shit about the country they live in nor who it will affect (ironically it will affect them in a bad way). They don’t give a crap about politics, all they want to do is get rid of Johnny Foreigner cos ‘Immigration’. Fuck those people. They don’t even have jobs for immigrants to take Hmm

Not a fan of Thatcher, but all valid points @Isabella70

There is NO WAY that the existing EU countries will coalesce into one superstate. French will always be French, German Italian and so on likewise.

I note how vestiges of previous states persist. In the corner of the South East NL, East Belgium and the area of Germany round Aachen there are all places or districts called Limburg. It turns out there was once a Duchy of Limburg. It's also an area where there is a lot of cross border traffic. Contrast that with an area further north in Germany, where we have friends whose parents live 15 miles from the Dutch border - they have never been there, they never intend to. This was an area which was never part of anywhere else.

So now you WANT EU interference in national politics? You do realise you are contradicting yourself?

sinceyouask · 11/10/2017 09:50

Our contributions to the EU cannot be measured in this way. We have paid into the EU for 40 years largely because of the benefits to our economy. Although they are difficult to quantify, the CBI estimates that the net benefit of EU membership is worth 4-5% of GDP to the UK, or £62bn-£78bn per year. Bear in mind that our net contributions are approximately £8.6bn.

I can't get over how many people seem to think that the EU takes money from us and we don't get any benefit from it.

I know, it's staggering. It's as if people don't want to understand.

outabout · 11/10/2017 09:56

There are always areas that would like to remain autonomous and to a degree this should be encouraged as a totally homogenised Europe would just become beige. The skill is to allow for diversity while ensuring health and a decent standard of living for all.
In the UK we have Wales, Scotland and some would argue Cornwall and other parts where diversity should exist. For some the 'war of the roses' is still continuing.
It's called negotiation.

I actually don't think they do.

Willowy: Posted on the H2020 Participant Portal a few days ago

For British applicants: Please note that until the UK leaves the EU, EU law continues to apply to and within the UK, when it comes to rights and obligations; this includes the eligibility of UK legal entities to fully participate and receive funding in Horizon 2020 actions. Please be aware however that the eligibility criteria must be complied with for the entire duration of the grant. If the United Kingdom withdraws from the EU during the grant period without concluding an agreement with the EU ensuring in particular that British applicants continue to be eligible, you will cease to be eligible to receive EU funding (while continuing, where possible, to participate) or be required to leave the project on the basis of Article 50 of the grant agreement.

Willowy · 11/10/2017 20:43

Thanks @Isabella70

Let’s hope an agreement is reached with the EU regarding this, the research is vital. Not entirely sure what happens after we’ve left though.

Talk about hypocritical. One of the EUs 'pros' was that it stopped fighting on the continent. Yet it seems it doesn't have much to say when problems start. So the EU cant have it both ways either it intervenes or it doesn't.

The answer is that it picks and chooses what fits with the superstate ideology. Time to leave.
