whether the vote is legitimate or not, for goodness sake, is deploying riot police to remove voters/protesters the right way? Terrible, Just terrible.

Can you imagine what would have happened if riot police were deployed to stop the Scottish independence referendum?

Surely by denying the Catalan people the vote all they will do is galvanise support for independence?

I really do think that it's significant that Catalonia, by popular vote, choose to adopt a constitution that emphasised the unity of Spain. As its people signed up for those rules, it's not OK to turn around and insist they be junked because... well, because why exactly?

That was almost 40 years ago. Catalans voted for that deal because it was a good deal back then - the alternative was a dictatorship with real fascists in charge. Yes there were fascists and commies and independentists sitting at that table and they reached a bloody good consensus by compromising.

40 years on, people are entitled to change their minds... look at the Brexit referendum. I explained upthread how several recent Spanish governments have been poisoning public and political life by scapegoating Catalonia. Those actions have consequences - regions set against each other in a country for political again. The damage is really hard to undo.

It's just going to keep getting worse.

The King offended the Catalans. The Catalans critisised the King. Madrid critisised the Catalans for critisising the King... Now Madrid has suspended the Catalan government session next week so they can't declare anything because they won't be getting into the building.

It's just all so, so messy.
