To think you shouldn't fucking comment on a strangers appearance?!

So.. I work in a customer facing job where I deal with many customers in one day, taking their car keys, handing them back once the work is done etc etc.

Today a lady came in who lets just say I found a little bit... strange. She randomly came out with "you have white on your nose... do you know!" In let's just say a not very nice manner. It wasn't in the manner of a woman looking out for another woman. It was bitchy. I said yes I know, it's highlighter. (I always put a tiny bit on the tip of my nose. It's a feature I'm now proud of since having a rhinoplasty last year.) and it didn't look white .. no one else said it was noticeable. Then she said.. "yes... it's white.."

Like what the fuck?! I saw her grey roots poking through her horrendous period blood coloured home dye job but I didn't say fuck all. You shouldn't comment on people's appearance.. it's rude :)

Anyone else thinking of this? :o

MerchantofVenice · 14/09/2017 20:32

No one would comment if they thought it was a deliberate look

It would be nice to think that - but sadly, people can be rude and awful.

I think we should pay OP the courtesy of believing what she says - and she said the customer did not seem friendly/concerned.

This thread has demonstrated a number of unpleasant things:

MNetters like a pile on;

Being interested in your appearance gets people's backs up;

Being overly upset at an insensitive comment is Very Bad;

Venting on here is as bad as criticising a stranger's appearance to their face;

If you use lots of make up you are fair game for ridicule.

There may be more.

dowagercountess · 14/09/2017 20:32

bahahahaha Weebo

Weebo · 14/09/2017 20:39

Stranger: You have done your make up totally wrong - Insensitive

Stranger: You have white on your nose - Really not a big deal.

MerchantofVenice · 14/09/2017 20:39

Actually I did think of that weebo

And FWIW (and at the risk of cementing my reputation as the pompous ass of the thread) Hermione isn't being kind there is she?! She's using her observation as a bit of power over Ron, and sneering at him.

That's what I imagined happened in OP's case.

MerchantofVenice · 14/09/2017 20:40

Weebo OP is the only one who heard the tone. I'm going to believe her over, um, you Grin

Weebo · 14/09/2017 20:41

And yet he married her anyway. :o

Bearbehind · 14/09/2017 20:48

I really don't think there's a way of saying 'you have white on your nose- do you know' that could be considered really offensive.

If she'd meant to be offensive she could have said way worse.

Sayyouwill · 14/09/2017 20:49

Has OP come back?

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 14/09/2017 20:52

Is it possible there was actually something else on your nose? Were you drinking a frothy coffee?

MerchantofVenice · 14/09/2017 20:53

I do see what you mean bear.
Yes. It's hard to see it being really offensive.

BUT I think people on this thread went for OP because she didn't express herself well, she showed too much investment in her appearance for MN to stomach and she admitted to wearing the sort of make up that MN likes to judge.

And those are shitty reasons to take against someone.

Sparklingbrook · 14/09/2017 20:53

Don't think so Say, they must be off powdering their nose.

Weebo · 14/09/2017 20:55

I agree Bear.

You never know, maybe she gave OP the finger while she said it?

Bearbehind · 14/09/2017 20:56

merchant, I think you are being overly generous.

People 'went for' the OP because she started a thread saying 'you shouldn't fucking comment on a strangers appearances' then went on to say a stranger had 'grey roots and a period blood coloured home dye job'.

Weebo · 14/09/2017 20:58

To be fair to the thread Merch I think OP had most posters at 'Period coloured hair'.

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 14/09/2017 21:01

Ah yes the old classic touching your face with your middle finger Grin

To be fair to the woman, OP did describe her as "strange". She could have had some sort of dementure? That can show itself in slightly inappropriate, personal or rude comments. So a bit like a child just saying what they see.

FindingNemoandDory · 14/09/2017 21:04

Agree with you entirely Merchant - threads like this put me off posting sometimes!

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 14/09/2017 21:06

Sometimes certain light +certain angle+highlighter= the appearance of block white.

Maybe she has some social processing issues or ASD and she just says what she sees. It's not like she said it looked ugly just that it existed.

Annoying but calm down, you sound overly looks-based in your OP.

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 14/09/2017 21:07

(Although I do know exactly the red hair colour you mean even though you said it a bit harshly)

TheDowagerCuntess · 14/09/2017 21:10

There is a thriving Style and Beauty forum on MN. Loads of us post in it. Loads of us are invested in our appearance.

I don't necessarily disagree with your overall point of view Merchant, and I agree that there's a cohort of people who like to take other women down for caring about that sort of thing.

But I'm not inclined to think that's what's happening here, per se.

TammySwansonTwo · 14/09/2017 21:13

When my twins were born, one of them was on a medication that causes excess hair growth. He stared getting a full head of hair and eyebrows, along with hair on his forehead and other places you couldn't see. Several strangers looked in their buggy and said he looked like a werewolf. One of them even followed it with "urgh".

That was rude.

This woman clearly noticed and I'd rather someone said.

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 14/09/2017 21:14

@jenniferl1983 yes to the eczema comments. 'Oh your skin is a bit red and dry on your cheek' ... wow I hadn't noticed my skin condition that never goes away, doesn't have a cure, and I'm self conscious about - thanks for letting me know it looks as bad as I thought.

Dustbunny1900 · 14/09/2017 21:14

I can't get "period blood colored hair" out of my head..Are we talkin like a 4th day dark brown or a second day bright scarlet type red..just out of pure curiosity

ILostItInTheEarlyNineties · 14/09/2017 21:19

Wasn't there a woman in the press that dyed her knitting with period blood? It was Art.

BeatriceBeaudelaire · 14/09/2017 21:20

@Dustbunny1900 I think it's like a mid-deep burgundy, think clot
