Another vote for Sagrada Familia - Absolutely incredible

BrieAndChilli · 14/09/2017 08:14

The Eiffel Tower is very good value for money, was about £40 for 5 of us to go up. It's so very iconic that just seeing t and going up it is worth it. It's been my 6 year olds no1 bucket list dream to go up it so we took him this year. He loved it. It was literally a dream come true for him!

Natural wonders:
The Icefields Parkway in Canada. Jaw droppingly spectacular scenery.

And the Maldives. Incredible in the daytime, but also at night time, whith phosphorescence at the waters edge and an amazing view of the Milky Way overhead.
Closer to home, Snowdonia National Park.

Man made:
The Taj Mahal. For the sheer opulence of all the inlaid and carved detail.
And London, the view along the Thames, the City with its fantastic buildings.

The Mesquita in Córdoba
The Alhambra in Granada
The Sagrada Familia
St John in Lateran in Rome
Wensleydale
The Teatro Greco in Taormina
Catching sight of St Mark's Basilica through an archway on the other side of the piazza, it was my third time in Venice and still the tears pricked.

The limestone karsts in Thailand.
Rhodes Town, first thing in the morning.

Peace Park at Hiroshima.

The most amazing museum / memorial I've ever been to.

Onthehighseas I went to Orandaur sur Glane last month it was quite eerie and very sad

The Trevi fountain was breathtaking also the Colosseum

Rosshilli bay in Wales

Mdina in Malta

PJBanana · 14/09/2017 10:46

Reading this thread has made me so excited! I'm off to Rome in a couple of weeks so I can't wait to see the Colosseum and the Pantheon.

One of mine (which I don't think has been mentioned yet) is Marina Bay Sands. I'm not usually one for modern landmarks but I found it so impressive, and the infinity pool is spectacular. A real 'wow' moment.

I adore the whole of Manhattan, we went a few weeks ago and had an amazing view across the city as we landed.

In the UK, The Lake District is hard to beat. We walked up Cat Bells summit a few months ago and the view from the top was breathtaking.

York Minster is stunning too. Hoping to go back there around Christmas time.

badtime · 14/09/2017 10:51

Castillo del Morro in Cuba.

Any medieval Gothic cathedral.

LightDrizzle · 14/09/2017 13:51

How could I forget the Matterhorn? Viewed from the Zermatt side, it is breathtaking.

deplorabelle · 14/09/2017 14:27

Les Baux de Provence. Atrocious weather so it was really quiet.

York Minster and Durham Cathedral.

Walking down the hill into Robin Hood's Bay.

Moscow metro stations and Zagorsk monastery. Everywhere in Leningrad (it was the last few months of Gorbachev so everything was falling apart but people were still excited and hopeful for the future)

Lindisfarne, Isle of Eigg, the Summer Isles, the castle on the Isle of Rum. The Fort William sleeper.

Beadieeye · 14/09/2017 14:39

I was absolutely mesmerised by the Sagrada Familia. I thought it was a lacy, wedding cakey, candle-melty, alien hybrid. Delicate yet imposing. Loved it! And got some photos of it from different perspectives where it looks strangely like a Disney castle.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 14/09/2017 14:40

I'd say I was pretty well travelled but I was surprised by my reaction to the Leaning Tower of Pisa. As soon as I got my first glimpse it took my breath away and I couldn't believe I was in the presence of this iconic building.

magicstar1 · 14/09/2017 14:46

Monument Valley...it was everything I'd hoped for.

bertsdinner · 14/09/2017 15:12

Durham cathedral, I especially liked those weathered figures/grave markers in front of the building.
Meteora, Greece. There was a fresco/depiction of Hell in one of the nunneries that I could have looked at for hours. Real hellfire and damnation stuff.
Stonehenge, a lot smaller than expected but I find stone circles/prehistoric monuments fascinating.
Hadrians Wall, Vindalanda and the Roman garrison. The whole thing, basically.

PJBanana · 14/09/2017 15:20

Ooh, not exactly a landmark but I forgot to mention Santorini. We arrived at our hotel just as the sun had set across the Caldera and it's the only view that has ever elicited an emotional reaction in me. (May have been the stress of a delayed flight and general knackeredness) but still, what a spectacular place.

BikeRunSki · 14/09/2017 16:23

The sand dunes of the Namib Dessert, particularly at sunset.

LordBuckley · 14/09/2017 17:04

An Italian landmark that deserves to be much better known is Milan's Duomo (cathedral).

The view from the roof is amazing (you can climb or take the lift), and inside, the sight of the sun streaming through the stained-glass windows is unforgettable.

NikiBabe · 14/09/2017 19:10

I was thinking of visiting Milan. The duomo sounds lovely.

honeyroar · 14/09/2017 22:05

Ooh id forgotten Les Baux de Provence deplorabelle, I used to live near there. And Fontaine de Vaucluse, particularly when it's going off, was impressive too.

mogulfield · 14/09/2017 22:16

Abu Simbel temple Egypt - really like something out of Indiana Jones and so well preserved for its age. Fascinating history and beautiful. The drive through the Sahara at night to get there for sun rise was amazing as well, I've never seen so many stars.

Mt Sinai in Egypt, as the sun is rising has an other worldly feel, I've never seen colours and a sun rise like it.

The Himalayas for sheer awesomeness, they're hard to take in and the Taj Mahal for its beauty. Il never forget the moment I turned the corner and saw it.

Another one here who loves the Sagrada Familia I didn't know a modern cathedral could be so beautiful. I also love Snowdonia and am fortunate to live very close to it.

Elizabethan · 14/09/2017 23:12

Milan Cathedral impressed me too.

I love the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. The ship is beautifully lit.

The main square in Syracusa, Sicily.

The three bridges over the Forth.

The Assynt area of the north-west highlands.

JillTheReckless · 14/09/2017 23:34

Baalbek in the Lebanon - makes the Parthenon seem like small fry

Agree with those who said the Grand Canyon and the Eiffel Tower (when it has its twinkling lights on at night). Taj Mahal blew me away.

I also agree with those who said Sigiriya - I was also a Duranie!

Petra is spectacular

New York is my favourite place in the world. The skyline makes me swoon

BorisTrumpsHair · 14/09/2017 23:37

Wai-o-tapu in NZ.
