Corby shopping centre

GreggsSausageRolls · 13/09/2017 23:02

@coconuttella if that's near you then you're near me! Grin go to rushden lakes instead!

RamblinRosie · 13/09/2017 23:03

Most of my favourite places have already been mentioned, but here are a few that I think have been missed.

Fountains Abbey, visited on a dreary March day, so next to nearly no other tourists.

Vergina in northern Greece, the tomb of Philip of Macedon, unrobbed and turned into an amazing display.

Petra, explored with a trainee guide , who was still amazingly enthusiastic, she also took us to Little Petra and out through the back of it to a place with lovely views where tourists rarely went... we took so long that a particularly gorgeous Jordanian soldier came to rescue us!

Baalbek in Lebanon, staying in the Palmyra Hotel, the site was amazing with views of the nearby Hezbollah communications tower, a weirdly bonkers place. The hotel was also run down and bonkers, but in a really nice way. Sadly, probably not safe to visit currently.

Luang Prabang in Laos was the most laid-back place I've ever been, tumbleweed down the Main Street at 8pm, I've never felt so chilled.

wewentoutonsunday · 13/09/2017 23:08

@steppemum

I was on the tube once and missed my stop because there was a massive picture in the Metro of Bromo erupting!

I also came on to say Borobudur.

Also Tikal in Guatemala.

ImNotShpanishImEgyptshun · 13/09/2017 23:12

The Old City in Dubrovnik. The most beautiful city I've ever seen. Like walking down Main Street in DisneyLand in the evening when it's all lit up, except a real place. Can't wait to go back.

LaurieFairyCake · 13/09/2017 23:21

The Mount of Olives where Moses was given the Ten Commandments- climbed it overnight and watched the dawn come up. Was pretty special.

Crossing the Wadi Rum to go to The Siq at Petra (yes the one in the Indiana Jones movie)

Westminster Abbey is really special too - seeing Elizabeth and Mary's tombs together was incredible. Putting them both in there healed a lot of history.

ButtMunchMagoo · 13/09/2017 23:24

La Sagrada Familia, Barcelona is the most awesomely amazing stunning mind blowingly wonderful thing I have ever clapped eyes on.

MFR3 · 13/09/2017 23:32

Very lucky to have backpacked around the world so have experienced amazing breathtaking natural landmarks, nothing beats nature, makes you feel insignificant.

But for man-made landmarks The Vatican Sistine Chapel took me by surprise, it fascinated me. Another favourite was Angkor Wat-incredible. I think what fascinated me about these man made structures is how it showed what humans are capable of.

LyannaStarktheWolfMaid · 13/09/2017 23:34

Leaning tower of Pisa. Pisa is crap.

LyannaStarktheWolfMaid · 13/09/2017 23:35

@coconuttella I grew up in Corby! No arguments there!

DeadButDelicious · 13/09/2017 23:37

The catacombs in Paris. Love me an ossuary.

Whitby Abby.

I really loved Stonehenge as it goes. Found it fascinating.

I've touched a piece of the titanic. That was weird. Probably doesn't count as a landmark though.

Homemadeapplepie · 13/09/2017 23:51

The Pantheon without a doubt. It's perfect, an amazing building from so long ago, I don't know how they did it.

Ground Zero is stunning, and moving of course. Plus, if you look one direction you have buildings like the ultra modern One World Trade Centre and turn in the opposite direction you have the original brick skyscrapers of "old" New York.

gingerscot · 13/09/2017 23:52

Tallinn old town
Church on spilled blood st Petersburg
Edinburgh castle
Grand Canyon
Dachau

All jaw dropping in their own ways

DeadButDelicious · 13/09/2017 23:53

Forgot one! The Venus de milo was pretty special.

saffronwblue · 14/09/2017 00:08

YY to Tallinn.
And Angkor Wat- I was there in the mid 90s so fear it is a lot more touristy and developed now.
MONA in Hobart, Tasmania- extraordinary powerful and quirky art museum

NikiBabe · 14/09/2017 02:32

Is Tallinn best as a christmas destination or summer?

saffronwblue · 14/09/2017 03:18

I have been to Tallinn in both seasons. Christmas- can be snowy, lovely market in the town square, gets dark about 3 pm and can be really cold, but atmospheric.
Summer - long light evenings, lovely countryside forests and beaches near Tallinn and Old Town more likely to be crowded with tourists.

Doyouthinktheysaurus · 14/09/2017 03:32

The Lake District as a whole but Wast Water in particular, so atmospheric and beautiful.

Lindisfarne. Just incredibly lovely and spiritual.

Anthony Gormley's men on Crosby beach. Really worth visiting.

Pontyscyllte aqueduct. Been a few times and I'm always awed by its height and watching the boats come past so high up.

MardAsSnails · 14/09/2017 03:32

Walking through the Siq in Petra and seeing the Treasury for the first time. You know it's there, but still. we just stood and looked for ages. It's huge

Also yes, Sigiriya in Sri Lanka

Watching the wildlife emerging at 5am along the river, the morning after a massive storm in the Bornean rainforest. It was like watching the world waking up and getting in with its business, including 5 pairs of Mum and baby orangutans and a herd of pigmy elephants. Amazing.

SuperBeagle · 14/09/2017 04:28

The Big Potato in Robertson, NSW. The town's only other claim to fame is that the film 'Babe' was shot there. Grin

(No sarcasm, obv)

nigelsbigface · 14/09/2017 06:19

Berlin-love the place.
Also Ellis island in NYC-so interesting.
Monsal dale in Derbyshire
Bamburgh in Nothumberland
Bigbury bay in Devon

Igneococcus · 14/09/2017 06:32

The abbey of San Antimo in Tuscany was fab, was entirely on my own when i went there in the early 90ties, probably busier today like everything else.
Maeshowe on Orkney, the combination of stone age burial chamber, viking graffitis and the most engaging and knowledgeable guide was wonderful.
A painting that impressed me a lot more than any other before was seeing Dali's Christ of Saint John of the Cross at Kelvingrove in Glasgow.
If the giant potato impressed you superbeagle you should really go and see the giant carrot in Ohakune, NZ Smile

thegirlupnorth · 14/09/2017 06:45

Colosseum in Rome and The Vatican. Colosseum being the only thing I've had a physical and emotional reaction to, every time.

Onthehighseas · 14/09/2017 06:53

The village of Oradour sur Glane. Think that will stay with me forever.

budgiegirl · 14/09/2017 07:15

The Pantheon in Rome on a rainy day, when the rain comes through the hole in the roof. A stunning building.
