The Angel of the North. I adore it.

Incitatis · 13/09/2017 10:15

Driving through Glencoe. I find it overwhelmingly beautiful and it feels like it has such power. I feel like I never want to leave that area. If I was young I'd move up there.

The Yorkshire Sculpture Park was ace, too. Must go back.

TonicAndTonic · 13/09/2017 10:17

The Taj Mahal was pretty special.

Also Armageddon (Megiddo) in Israel - not because there's much to actually see, just the idea of standing where the last battle between good an evil will be fought at the end of the world, according to the bible. (I'm not religious, but I grew up around bible stories etc so it still made me tingle to go there).

New York at Christmas - especially Central Park in the snow.

Closer to home, the Callanish Stones on Lewis are impressive.

notarehearsal · 13/09/2017 10:18

Ngorongoro Crater Tanzania

chipsandpeas · 13/09/2017 10:20

korean war momument in washington, seen this at night and it was creepy yet wow at the same time, gave me goosebumps
have to say americans can do monuments great
statue of liberty and manhattan skyline was breathtaking, seeing it on tv and films for years doesnt do it justice in real life imo

theEagleIsLost · 13/09/2017 10:22

Lake District - was doing field work and still to this day remember actually looking up and looking out over some of the lake - and having my breath taken away it was so specular.

Pembroke castle - though that was mainly the free tour we went on - the guide was fantastic really brought the place to life and had my children enthralled or over an hour and half – nearly two hours. Then sun came out and we found a great pub next to the river - so overall really liked Pembroke.

FrankiesKnuckle · 13/09/2017 10:28

Angkor wat - simply breathtaking, the size and scale of it.

Omaha beach and the American war graves site in Normandy. Again the size and scale are breathtaking for very different reasons.

JaneEyre70 · 13/09/2017 10:34

Statue of Liberty
9/11 site
Lake district
Walking the south west coastal path in Devon
Big Ben
Chesil Beach
Gloucester Cathedral

saffronwblue · 13/09/2017 10:36

The Pantheon. Could have stayed there all day.
Mauritzhuis gallery in The Hague. Exquisite.
Kangaroo island in South Australia. Beautiful spot, reminds me of my childhood.

AllFakeFurCoatAndNoSpanx · 13/09/2017 10:37

Abu Simbel is stunning (while I like posters on an earlier thread was completely unmoved by Sphinx and Pyramids even though I really tried!)

Nemrut Dagi in Turkey.

The Hagia Sophia in Istanbul.

honeyroar · 13/09/2017 10:38

So many of these things already listed!

Rome is my favourite place in the world, despite having been a long haul stewardess for 20 years. I love the Trevi and the Roman forum. I also love the Cinque Terre in Italy.

Gorge and Canyon du Verdon in France - I loved it more than the Grand Canyon.

Pyramids near Mexico City (forgot the names), impressed me more than the Cairo ones, perhaps because you can climb them? I would love to see more Egyptian ruins though.

Rio- Corcovado and Sugarloaf both impressed me, in fact all of Rio is amazing!

Eifle tower. I spent a year living with it outside my bedroom window and never got bored of it lit up.

Lots of uk places are pretty special too. I never get tired of the view flying over London on the approach to Heathrow.

Oh and the Great Wall in China (and the slide down it!), the forbidden city and the Ming tombs were pretty special, but otherwise I don't like China as a modern country, but its historic remains are wonderful.

Amd724 · 13/09/2017 10:41

A PP said York Minster. I get a view of it every morning and night as I live nearby. Seeing it with the sun rising is gorgeous, and then at night with all the lights of it lit up is also stunning. I'm blown away each time I take the time to look at it, and I'm also atheist!

I'm biased, as an American, but I think the Vietnam War Memorial in Washington DC is stunning, in a different way. All of the names. The reflective pool in the Washington DC area, leading to the Lincoln Memorial. I always imagine MLK jr.'s I have a dream speech there. It's pretty incredible.

From my trip to Japan, I must second the Cherry blossoms in Kyoto. They gifted some to DC and the Cherry blossoms in DC are also stunning, but in Japan they're something else. Almost every place I went to in Japan was stunning, and that includes the memorials in Japan to those who died because of the atomic weapons. It's serene and just so sad, but breathtaking.

And, to whoever said Sacre Coeur, Sagrada Familia, and Notre Dame. Yes Yes Yes. Every time I'm in Paris, I go sit at Sacre Coeur at night. It's just gorgeous.

peppykoala · 13/09/2017 10:41

Church of the Saviour on blood & Winter Palace in St Petersburg were just amazing. Another for the Pantheon too, I don't think I've ever felt such a complete sense of history anywhere as you do in there.

Amd724 · 13/09/2017 10:42

Oh and the Grand Canyon! I was surprised so many people said it wasn't stunning in the other post. My husband and I did a helicopter tour through the Canyon and it was unbelievably stunning. It was definitely more than just a hole! Absolutely incredible. We took a video while in the helicopter, and at the beginning we were just chatting away. As soon as the Canyon came into view, all conversation ceased as everyone in the helicopter was just in awe. Beautiful and stunning doesn't even describe how amazing it looked.

Amd724 · 13/09/2017 10:46

I saw someone say NYC at Christmas, London at Christmas gets my vote. It was lovely, my husband and I went through the markets, ice skated. It was so nice. York during Christmas is breathtaking as well, if you can brave the crowds. And I must give a shoutout to my home city, Chicago. Chicago during Christmas is horribly cold, but beautiful. All of the snow, the completely frozen lake with steam coming from the lake, the Christmas lights, it makes me homesick thinking about it!

StorminaBcup · 13/09/2017 10:46

After seeing the tiny Mona Lisa and being hugely disappointed we went to the Musee-Orangerie and saw Monet's water-lilies. It's a beautiful space and relatively quiet compared to the madness of the Louvre.

Bryce Canyon was fantastic, especially early in the morning.

Machu Picchu, postcard perfect even though it was really busy.

echt · 13/09/2017 10:46

So many already mentioned:

Sagrada Familia
Grand Canyon
Angel of the North
Central London

Looking at the Melbourne CBD from the banks of the Yarra at night.

saffronwblue · 13/09/2017 12:43

The War Memorial in Canberra. Very solemn and poignant.

And the Vietnam memorial in Washington.

Someoneasdumbasthis · 13/09/2017 12:59

Victoria Falls
David
Kilimanjaro
Rome in general

Someoneasdumbasthis · 13/09/2017 12:59

Oh and the Namib desert. Took my breath away.

BuckinhamL · 13/09/2017 13:11

Not sure if an something underground counts as a landmark, but the Drogarati caves (hope that's spelled right) in Kefalonia were astonishing - the Germans used the stalagmites and stalactites as target practice when they occupied the island and you could still see the grooves where the bullets had taken the ends off. Utter vandalism.

Blink1982 · 13/09/2017 13:20

I loved the holocaust memorial in Florida. It's a giant hand with ppl crawling up it.
