I was amazed by Rome in general really, and Pompeii, but I think the Pantheon amazed me the most

PolaDeVeboise · 13/09/2017 14:04

The Kelpies in Falkirk - absolutely breathtaking. I audibly gasp every time I drive past them.

Subtlecheese · 13/09/2017 14:07

The Pantheon is great (though a shame mcdonalds are so close as the litter seems to travel across the piazza).
For me the natural fjord formations in Norway were astounding. For a manmade landmark memorials tend to affect me deeply. Though hard to narrow it down!

SenecaFalls · 13/09/2017 14:08

Michaelangelo's David
St. Paul's Cathedral

slinkysaluki · 13/09/2017 14:10

The Empire State is impressive also from the top, bit scary though 😶

ButtonBoo · 13/09/2017 14:15

Oh...and the Jameos del Agua in Lanzarote. Such a beautiful place to spend the day

Kochicoo · 13/09/2017 14:16

The Ellora Caves, India. Was totally expecting to be underwhelmed and it was the exact opposite.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/09/2017 14:50

Wonderful thread! So many of my favourite places already mentioned and many many more that I now want to visit.

I'll add a few more:

The Great Ocean Road, Victoria, Australia - 150 miles of twisting road hugging the coastline. On one side the ocean surf beaches and rock formations. On the other dense bushland/forest rising up, with flashes of jewel colours between the trees from the parrakeets/lovebirds/rosellas.

Tintern Abbey on the bank of the Wye River in Monmouthshire. So atmospheric. Easy to imagine the ghosts of medieval monks wandering through the ruins. Very very peaceful. And the whole of the Wye Valley is glorious anyway.

Tasmania. Australia's best-kept secret.

BikeRunSki · 13/09/2017 17:54

Fingal's Cave was pretty awesome.

MidLifeCrisis2017 · 13/09/2017 20:54

Just thought of another one - the view from the "death railway" on the way to the bridge over the river Kwai. Red mountains of Burma on one side.

Every single Commonwealth War Graves cemetery I've ever been to, plus the American one in Normandy.

chemenger · 13/09/2017 21:04

The inside of the Segrada Familia in Barcelona was the most amazing building I have ever seen, went in winter when the sun was low and coming through the stained glass, breathtaking. The outside is confusing and over ornate, the inside is stunning.

Cailleach666 · 13/09/2017 21:04

Gijantia in Gozo
Skara Brae in Orkney

Wigeon · 13/09/2017 21:05

Lake District. So lucky to have such incredible bits to the U.K.

Totally blown away by the Roman ruins at Ostia Antica - a whole town, whole buildings preserved, shops, roads. It's absolutely incredible. And much less well known than Pompeii.

St Petersburg

Westminster in London

Kyoto in a Japan

I wasn't that wowed by the Sagrada Familia. Not quite sure why not - just seemed like a big church Blush...

eurochick · 13/09/2017 21:06

Chichen Itza is special.
Seeing the sun come up from the top of mount Sinai was pretty special.
St Paul's is special. I see it every day from my office and it never gets old.

Highpeak · 13/09/2017 21:09

Natural: iguassu falls, just majestic and such a different experience from the Brazilian and Argentinian sides.

Man made: Tikal, it's a huge Maya temple complex in Guatemala. If you have Indiana jones fantasies this is the place, most of it is unexcavated and it's in the jungle with monkeys in the trees, you can wonder for hours and hardly see anyone. When I first went you could climb to the top of several of the Pyramids and look out over the site and jungle. Last trip only one was open.

EnglishGirlApproximately · 13/09/2017 21:10

Abu Simbel was jaw dropping.

Also loved Sacre Coeur, Sagrada Familia, Table Mountain and the Sani Pass.

Not really a landmark as such but travelling down the Amazon then getting to Manaus with its C&A and gorgeous Opera House was incredible- this huge bustling city in the middle of the rainforest

CaptainMarvelDanvers · 13/09/2017 21:11

Roseberry Topping.

thenightsky · 13/09/2017 21:12

The Ngorongo crater in Tanzania. I didn't want to leave.

Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona. Again, I didn't want to leave.

Valley of the Kings pretty much beats everything though.

Pandoraslastchance · 13/09/2017 21:25

Ribblehead viaduct on the settle to Carlisle route. I was 12 and vividly remember hanging out the coach window watching as the steam engine pulled us over the viaduct.

BonnieF · 13/09/2017 21:33

Cape point in South Africa -amazing scenery and I loved the dassies!

Death Valley. Utterly spectacular and on the day we visited a
Most completely deserted.

Yosemite - breathtaking.

RusholmeRuffian · 13/09/2017 21:37

Monument Valley

Ta1kinPeece · 13/09/2017 21:39

The Pantheon in the rain and the dark - indescribably awesome

Stonehenge at a Winter Solstice when you can stand in the stones and realise their size

Humber Bridge - it truly is enormous

TheSconeOfStone · 13/09/2017 21:44

The Grand Mosque in Djenne, Mali. Looks like something from another planet.

Wells cathedral

Avebury

Uffizi in Florence

The Louvre

Venice

Iceland

Greenwich (used to live close by and still feels like my London)

Recently returned from summer hols in the Netherlands and visited a world heritage site called kinderdijk. lots of beautiful old windmills and a serene landscape. Such a contrast to our hills (we're in Devon). an insight into the ingenuity and sheer hard graft that created the landscape.

Toddlerteaplease · 13/09/2017 21:44

York Minster,
Rome,
Les Jacobins in Toulouse. Literally took my breath away when I walked in. It wasn't at all what I expectedz

Pinkkahori · 13/09/2017 21:44

I really loved Mdina, the little walled city in Malta. It is known as the Silent City.
