Littlecaf · 13/09/2017 07:01

Aya Sophia in Istanbul. That dome!

I love Wells Cathedral too.

I have a soft spot for Brighton Pavilion too. Love the Banquetting Room with the chandelier suspended by the dragon.

Littlecaf · 13/09/2017 07:03

The bridge at Mostar too, although the stone work is poor

Witchitywoo · 13/09/2017 07:04

Everest and the Himalayas in general. Flew along the length of it and cried. Just so awe inspiring, humbling and beautiful.

ButtonBoo · 13/09/2017 07:05

Sacre Coeur
La Sagrada Familia
Tanah Lot and Ubud Temple in Bali
Everywhere in NZ

LakieLady · 13/09/2017 07:09

Wells cathedral. It is simply lovely.

As well as being an amazing space, filled with light (not gloomy like a lot of cathedrals), as well as all the obvious beauty, it has some amazing small carvings that sort of surprise you as you walk round (there's a little lizard carved on the stone on a staircase, for no apparent reason, but it's simply lovely and seems almost like someone did it just for fun). The quality of the masonry is awesome.

It's worth visiting the bishop's palace and gardens too, they're absolutely lovely and the whole cathedral close is beautiful..

FairyPenguin · 13/09/2017 07:12

The Dolomites in Italy.
Lake Wanaka in NZ.
Being inside the Sagrada Familia.
View of Puerto Soller bay for the first time.
Snorkelling off the Riveria Maya coast in Mexico - fish and coral just amazing.

SheGotOffThePlane · 13/09/2017 07:13

Sagrada Famillia
Petra, Jordan
Karrijini National Park in WA is the most incredibly stunning place to camp and swim and explore. Beautiful.

GemmaB78 · 13/09/2017 07:20

Landmannalauger in Iceland. The colours and geology just blew me away.

BritabroadinAsia · 13/09/2017 07:20

The temples of Siem Reap, Cambodia - Angkor Wat is amazing
Terracotta warriors in Xian, China
The Great Wall
Cherry blossom in Kyoto
Sydney Opera House - not because it's inherently spectacular but because growing up, I never expected to see it 'in the flesh'.

In fact that has been part of the experience of visiting places around SE Asia. I didn't ever think I would get to see them and am v lucky to be living relatively close now.

Great thread, OP. Very inspiring!

Natsku · 13/09/2017 07:34

St. Basil's Cathedral in the Red Square - beautiful
The Winter Palace was also pretty impressive too

Hell's Lake National Park near me has some beautiful views as well

SilentSilverLights · 13/09/2017 08:08

La Coupee on Sark in the Channel Islands. Takes my breath away.

Glastonbury Abbey and the Chalice Well are both stunningly beautiful.

Dixiestampsagain · 13/09/2017 09:02

I forgot Ephesus!

justshruggingreally · 13/09/2017 09:09

I went to Marrakech last year and we stayed just off the Jemaa al-Fnaa, the big famous square. Wasn't impressed the first day as we got ripped off at every turn and it was quite quiet and touristy. This was the last day of Ramadan. The next evening, Ramadan ended and Eid began, it was absolutely bloody wonderful. The square was heaving with people celebrating, there was a massive crowd and people gathered around dozens of entertainers and storytellers. There were snake charmers, fortune tellers, bare-knuckle boxing, dancers, musicians... it was dark except for strings of light and smoke rising from ovens so you could weave through the crowd unnoticed as a tourist. The atmosphere was completely magical, it was one of the best experiences of my life.

Welshwabbit · 13/09/2017 09:40

Oooh so many!

I think my favourite is the fairy chimneys and Goreme national park in Cappadoccia. The pictures don't show you how amazing it is. We got up early one morning to watch the balloon tours taking off over the valleys and it was one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen (just looked upthread and seen someone else has also mentioned Cappadoccia which makes me happy!).

Florence Duomo - I gasped when I first saw it. And the Ghirlandaio frescoes in Santa Maria Novella and the Fra Angelico ones in the Museo di San Marco.

The Terracotta Warriors - the sheer number of them, and all the faces are different.

All the Gaudi in Barcelona, but especially Casa Batllo

The Ecstasy of St Teresa in Santa Maria della Vittoria in Rome. I saw it in an art book when I was little and always wanted to see it in real life. It is fantastic and we go back to see it every time we're in Rome.

Arashiyama Bamboo Forest in Japan.

Sarajevo one cold spring morning as the sun was coming up over the hills on each side of the city, one covered in Muslim graves and the other in Christian. I will never forget that.

steppemum · 13/09/2017 09:46

Borobudur in Central Java

came on to say this and can't believe someone beat me to it!
best seen at sunrise.

Also Mount Bromo ( a volcano) in east Java. You need to get up in the middle of the night though

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/09/2017 09:49

Sahara Desert seeing the sun rise and moon set was breathtaking an amazing sight it looked as though you could walk up and touch them

Phi Phi island in Thailand before it was spoilt I swam out about 200 meters and looked back it was so beautiful and peaceful I cried

Golden Gate Bridge ok there is no golden gate but when it's foggy and you hear the power of the water beneath its amazing and eerie

Yorkshire moors when the heather is in bloom beautiful in a harsh way

The view from Waterloo Bridge always moves me the history and future all around it always moves me

EnthusiasmIsDisturbed · 13/09/2017 09:51

And Yosemite Park California absolutely beautiful

expatinscotland · 13/09/2017 09:52

Lake Windemere

scaryclown · 13/09/2017 09:55

I was extremely surprised at the power of the Turin Shroud. I saw it almost by accident, and it was riveting...

scaryclown · 13/09/2017 09:59

Also this is amazing en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veiled_Christ

I always try not to look at it first, as all the sculpture in this tiny church is astounding, but even after all that, it's quality takes my breath away.

It really looks like the figure underneath the veil could just wake and get up, it's jaw dropping..

MumBod · 13/09/2017 10:10

The Bronte Parsonage at Haworth blew me away.

I love Central London in general. I get a real buzz from it, the history along with the present, all just rubbing along.

The Trevi Fountain in Rome took my breath away.

Seeing an exhibition of the pre-Raphaelites a few years ago was the nearest thing I've had to a religious experience. I couldn't drag myself away from The Lady of Shalott.

Anne Frank Huis in Amsterdam (before they turned it into the theme park it more or less is now) was devastating. I cried buckets.

Holkham Beach in Norfolk.
