To judge this woman?

Leaving the local maternity unit today and a heavily pregnant woman who is obviously a patient as she was wearing a dressing gown, slippers and pyjamas was standing right near the doorway smoking a cigarette, there is a big sign up saying 'no smoking on campus'. Aibu to judge her that she is not only putting her own baby at risk but she wants to put other people's baby's at risk from secondhand smoke as well? I would definitely have said something if i were leaving the unit with my newborn baby!

What about premmies that might be leaving with sensitive lungs, fuck their rights to a smoke free environment as well then because after all 'your body, your choice hun'.

They do! I've seen them at our local hospital, standing and chatting in pairs.

Subtlecheese · 11/09/2017 18:56

I used to go to a miscarriage and fertility clinic just off to the side of the main hospital at the enf of the maternity unit.
A whole lot of people used to smoke between the two buildings.
I didn't judge. But I did witness an emotional confrontation once. I don't think a waft of second hand smoke outside is in the risk element of being trapped in a room with the various noxious chemicals.

x2boys · 11/09/2017 18:57

They should bring back the smoke rooms nobody gave a shit when they couldn't see staff or patients smokingHmm

m0therofdragons · 11/09/2017 18:58

Oh for Gods sake get over it, if you had your newborn baby in a car seat just put a muslin over the seat as you walk through

Nope, not good enough. My baby was prem and had to be resuscitated and at 6 years old still has asthma. Smokers can fuck right off when I'm going in and out of the hospital with dd to consultant appointments! Am I supposed to put a muslin over over her head too?

By April 2019 all hospitals are to be smokefree and many already are. Everyone should be able to walk into a hospital without walking through a cloud of smoke.

silverbell64 · 11/09/2017 18:58

Totally up to her. I smoke all the way through being pregnant with my son. He really is fine.

kittybiscuits · 11/09/2017 18:58

Smoking is banned on hospital sites so whatever she inflicts on her unborn child, she has no right to inflict it on staff, patients or visitors to the hospital.

silverbell64 · 11/09/2017 18:59

*smoked

URaflutteringcunt · 11/09/2017 18:59

It's not just babies who suffer because of smokers but anyone with breathing issues. There should be no smoking outside of hospitals for the sake of anyone with asthma etc. At my local hospital they avoid the shelter in favour of the door. It really is selfish, sorry.

JonSnowsWife · 11/09/2017 19:00

There should be a smoking shelter, preferably room, provided.

We had these. They got taken down as they were seen as encouraging smoking by whoever makes these decisions.

Clearly you have a huge problem with this so you should of just said something. She probably would of just moved

silverbell64 · 11/09/2017 19:00

My mother a bottle in one hand and a fag in the other. Im fine, 55 and never even had a chest infection in my life. I think its time everyone just gets over themselves.

MrsCharlieD · 11/09/2017 19:02

I hate seeing pregnant women smoking and yes I do judge.

The special care baby unit and post natal ward of my hospital is above a covered entrance where people often smoke. The hospital has even put signs up saying smoke is going up to the wards and is affecting the mothers and babies, yet still people smoke there. It makes me so angry.

DustyMaiden · 11/09/2017 19:02

I left the antenatal clinic and asked a passerby for a cigarette, I sat on the wall and smoked it. A judgemental women proceeded to lecture me, I told her I don't think it harms dead babies.

I hadn't smoked for two years but after that news I needed to.

Mymycherrypie · 11/09/2017 19:03

A lot of these responses are along the lines of : why not "just" change your behaviour so that someone else can break rules which are in place for the good of everyone.

I'm not down with that.

kittybiscuits · 11/09/2017 19:03

Silverbell nails it with the scientific proof there!

ladymariner · 11/09/2017 19:04

Well, aren't you clever silver Hmm

I judge. Why should non smokers have to putup with the smell and litter? When my dad was seriously ill in hospital a bloke on his ward used to regularly go outside for a fag, in
his slippers

and gown, trailing his machine behind him, then trudge back onto the ward, bringing god knows how many germs and shit with him. Yeah, I fucking judge.

x2boys · 11/09/2017 19:05

Hospitals can ban smoking as much as they want doesn't mean people won't smoke though they just do it more illicitally putting everyone at risk from fires it was much better when there were smoke rooms only smokers went in there.

ladymariner · 11/09/2017 19:06

I should also preview my posts!! Bloody phone Grin

demirose87 · 11/09/2017 19:06

I agree it is wrong, but its her life and it doesn't concern you so I wouldn't worry about it. And the thing is, babies may be going past and inhaling the smoke, but there are going to be times when you're out and about with a baby and people are smoking in the street, pregnant or not and you can't stop them.

LML83 · 11/09/2017 19:07

it's not ideal and thoughtless. I think the baby harmed will be hers not one passing through on way to smoke free car and home.

I feel sorry for the baby. Either she isn't bothered or is trying really hard. No point judging.

silverbell64 · 11/09/2017 19:07

I never said I was "clever" mariner. I am stating that it's not some massive evil thing to do.

Fluffypinkpyjamas · 11/09/2017 19:13

Imo it's wrong but a lot on here will say her body her choice

I agree loveanimals

Personally, I think smoking whilst pregnant is fucking disgusting.
