Will Irma actually make landfall there?

badbadhusky · 04/09/2017 23:05

We need OYBBK for a meteorological take on things, though a few days ago she said it was unclear where Irma would make landfall & the modelling was predicting a number of outcomes. Perhaps the modelling is starting to agree on its path.

Hurricane Irma strengthens to Category 4, 'increasing chance' could affect Florida

abcnews.go.com/International/hurricane-irma-strengthens-closes-caribbean/story?id=49608171

Hurricane Irma has strengthened to a Category 4 storm today, and the National Hurricane Center said there is an "increasing chance" that Florida and the Florida Keys will see "some impacts from" Irma later this week and weekend, though it's still too early to determine what direct effects it may have.

Florida Gov. Rick Scott on Monday declared a state of emergency for every county to ensure that local governments have enough "time, resources and flexibility to get prepared for this dangerous storm," according to a statement from his office.

I'm here :) went to bed an hour ago but insomnia strikes. Hang on will have a look.

Placemarking with a WTF?
Have been away for a week and return to NK flexing its muscles again Sad
SCROTUS is still a dick.

The models tend to have the same degree of uncertainty, but they only seem to be any good for 3 days ahead. Further than that and the uncertainty is too great.
As Irma moves along, some paths become less likely, but Florida will only know with any decent degree of certainty 3 days in advance.

Spare a thought for Cuba, as it looks like it will hit them directly.

badbadhusky · 04/09/2017 23:17

SCROTUS is still a dick.

I think we can take that as a given, whether this is thread 5, 10, 50 or 500 (God forbid!). Grin

MicrowaveSpy · 04/09/2017 23:19

And now Irma is cat.4!
What is going on? What will morning bring?

badbadhusky · 04/09/2017 23:20

Winged monkeys? Hopefully bearing gin, like St Bernards.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/09/2017 23:21

ok, theres good model agreement and at least over the next few days this one is probably going to be easier to predict than Harvey was. In the firing line are probably Puerto Rico, quite probably Cuba, the Bahamas and the Florida Keys, all as a major Hurricane. Maybe the Florida peninsula too. Of course small wobbles will have a big impact on who does and doesn't get a direct hit, but the effects will have a wide impact.

After that, who knows... The most major risks over the next few days with Irma will be storm surge and wind damage.

badbadhusky · 04/09/2017 23:21

^ That was to Microwaves Q about what the morning will bring.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/09/2017 23:22

Much much better model agreement with Irma than there was with Harvey.

badbadhusky · 04/09/2017 23:22

Thanks OYBBK. Wine

OhYouBadBadKitten · 04/09/2017 23:27

Gin :)

SanFranBear · 05/09/2017 00:12

Oh no Sad - Puerto Rico is in no economic state to be able to withstand a Cat 4 hurricane! As a US territory and therefore having no voting power, I can see Scrotus palming them off as well..

By early August 2017, the debt was $72 billion in with a 45% poverty rate

cozietoesie · 05/09/2017 00:30

Guam will be watching with interest, I reckon. (Re the US territory bit.)

Poor PR.

lionheart · 05/09/2017 01:04

New York.

challenge to Trump

Hope the storm passes.

CanadianJohn · 05/09/2017 01:39

All you preppers stashing cash - you may have the wrong idea. In the event of nuclear war, currency may have no value. Hoard gold, or even better, liquor. You can always trade a bottle of booze for food, if worse comes to worst.

AcrossthePond55 · 05/09/2017 01:53

I'm good, John. DS1 has plans to hide a still. Wink

AcrossthePond55 · 05/09/2017 02:05

Oh, on another topic ; tomorrow is the day that Scrotus is going to make his 'pronouncement' on the Dreamers (DACA).

A friend's wife would have been classified as a dreamer, but this was before that EO. She was deported and it took 18 months to get her back in the US legally. She was married to a US citizen and had a US citizen child. The child went with her (by mutual agreement). It was horrendous for him, having his wife and child living in Mexico with relatives she barely knew. It cost them thousands to get her back here.

I think we already know what Scrotus is going to decide. So here's a preemptive FUCK YOU, SCROTUS!!!!

Defense Minister Moots Return of U.S. Nukes to S.Korea (via Digital Chosun, a South Korean media source.

Contrast that with this from The Hill, about an increase in the allowable South Korean missile payload. This is actually very important. Trump is selling SK weapons and, at the same time, lifting payload restrictions so they can carry larger missiles. He is lighting the fuse.
