in our case (living in fairly rural Scotland), we are more thinking civil unrest and/or collapse of financial institutions after a limited nuclear exchange.

lettuce I think just plain civil unrest due to economic conditions or financial system failure through corruption is more likely than a nuclear attack of any kind. We've got a cash reserve stashed in case of bank instability or a crash of the market. We have some acreage lying fallow that we could grow food on or that would be suitable for one or two steers, and more that could be plowed under. We have some mature fruit trees. We also have an unused pig sty, but we'd have to reclaim it from overgrowth. And we are on well-water.

We aren't preppers in any form, nor are we really starting to 'prep'. But the potential 'self-sufficiency' of our property is something that we never, ever thought about before the last election. Since the election we've caught ourselves 'making plans' and some of our friends who live in urban areas have only half-jokingly asked if we have room for them to pitch a tent!

It's a scary world!

And on a lighter note; DS1 has found the perfect place to hide the still. After all, if we're going to witness the collapse of a civilization, we'll need some good liquor to make it bearable!

Alcohol makes a good disinfectant too. Wink

In that case, Trump being teetol suddenly explains the festering happening at the White House

SetPhasersTaeMalkie · 04/09/2017 19:22

Thanks for the new thread. Am still here reading but struggling to keep up at the moment.

Thank you so much for all the links. Flowers

From Politico ^

lionheart · 04/09/2017 19:29

Back from the August recess by all accounts. Hmm

badbadhusky · 04/09/2017 19:30

This bit warmed my cockles:

The return of the congressional Russia probes also means the return of a phenomenon that has reportedly enraged Trump and caused him to lash out at GOP leaders: constant headlines about the latest incremental developments in these sprawling and unwieldy investigations. Grin Grin

There will be the daily, sometimes hourly, leaks about new witnesses, new lines of inquiry. There will be ominous cable news footage of lawmakers and witnesses disappearing into classified briefing rooms. And there will be grandstanding and bickering among members of Congress in both parties, many of them trying to capitalize on the Russia investigations to further their own political ambitions.

cozietoesie · 04/09/2017 19:31

A Beast piece from end August.

Wait till fall starts

DoctorTwo · 04/09/2017 20:04

Thanks for the new thread TheClaws.

Wrt to your link to personal debt being the catalyst for the next crash Lweji, I see Zoe Williams is taking the same position Prof, Steve Keen did about 3 years ago. And yes, the auto loan situation in the US is in the same boat.

cozietoesie · 04/09/2017 20:12

It was certainly a sobering piece. Sad

ringle · 04/09/2017 20:40

I like to think Heather's parents might see the thread xx

Nothing useful to add but actively lurking

Placemarking

lettuceWrap · 04/09/2017 21:18

Yes, Across, I agree with you post about civil unrest (any cause) being more likely than anything nuclear.

Talking about it today with DH has crystallised a lot of ideas/worries we both have. Due to DH's job he considers some sort of contagion to be the big risk for societal collapse (he's medical but involved in regional planning of resources). I guess cash, water and food are still the main concern, whatever the cause... I might be turning a little bit prepper ShockSmile

saffronwblue · 04/09/2017 21:29

Re North Korea, one of the things to bear in mind is that both Russia and China loathe the missile shield THAAD and don't want it deployed on the Korean Peninsula.
It does cast a weird pall on things, doesn't it? I have never been a prepper type but am thinking about what we could have in store. According to the graphic on the news last night , a nk missile could reach the north third of Australia.

cozietoesie · 04/09/2017 21:51

I haven't changed my mind about NK since Inauguration Day. (Changed it about some other things. Wink)

BiglyBadgers · 04/09/2017 21:58

This is an interesting, if somewhat terrifying, read on NK. It sums up why I find the NK Vs Trump situation far scarier then Trump Vs China or even Russia. The combination of two delusional dictators, both trying to prove themselves, is a recipe for horror.

That was a very interesting piece - if utterly depressing.

cozietoesie · 04/09/2017 22:08

I've bought her book.

Golondrina · 04/09/2017 22:14

Wow, that was a terrifyingly awful read.

saffronwblue · 04/09/2017 22:19

Thanks bigly, that was very powerful. A whole nation of institutional emotional abuse for three generations.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 04/09/2017 22:26

Someone showed me this on Twitter today.
So I just looked up the rest of the psalm.

Psalm 109:8-16King James Version (KJV)

8 Let his days be few; and let another take his office.

9 Let his children be fatherless, and his wife a widow.

10 Let his children be continually vagabonds, and beg: let them seek their bread also out of their desolate places.

11 Let the extortioner catch all that he hath; and let the strangers spoil his labour.

12 Let there be none to extend mercy unto him: neither let there be any to favour his fatherless children.

13 Let his posterity be cut off; and in the generation following let their name be blotted out.

14 Let the iniquity of his fathers be remembered with the Lord; and let not the sin of his mother be blotted out.

15 Let them be before the Lord continually, that he may cut off the memory of them from the earth.

16 Because that he remembered not to shew mercy, but persecuted the poor and needy man, that he might even slay the broken in heart.

Lweji · 04/09/2017 22:30

I keep trying to convince myself that KJU has a strong self-preservation instinct, but then again... Hitler.

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 04/09/2017 22:41

Gosh, that's incredibly bleak.
