AIBU to sack cleaner after Dettol spillage and she didn't tell me???

We have just got home after being away and our cleaner came yesterday.
She has spilled what seems to be an entire bottle of Dettol in the kids room, washed it, left it and didn't tell us.
Why it was being used in there I'm not sure, I think more likely she was carrying it and dropped it.
We got back, all windows shut and a boiling hot day today as could smell the Dettol stink as soon as we opened the front door.
I texted and asked and she said yes she has spilled in in our child's room but washed it so no stain and went home.
Surely the fumes are dangerous from Dettol?
We've opened the window and moved her in with us for tonight but how on earth do you get the smell out?
It absolutely stinks.
Aibu to sack her?

Unless she cleaned it with bleach it shouldn't pose a threat.

Firefries · 25/08/2017 22:12

Ahh bleach, btw for anyone who swims in a swimming pool cleaned with chlorine, you do know it's bleach. You swim in bleach. Inhaling bleach or chlorine gas can kill you. Just so you know. We can swim in bleach, like dettol (except people bathe in it) but too much of it can kill you (prob like what the OP is suggesting). Dettol is fine OP unless you over think it. I think you can apply that overthinking to most things.

HotelEuphoria · 25/08/2017 22:12

If it were bleach / Domestos I'd get it as that's both damaging and gives off fumes but Dettol - really? TCP is dangerous for cats I know but I use dettol and dettol wipes on surfaces and generations of cats seem to survive....

lookingbeyond40 · 25/08/2017 22:19

If this is all you have to gripe about you live a charmed life.........

YABU and quite frankly coming across as a bit of a tool.........

Have you tried to steam clean/scrub carpet to lift the smell?

Mulch · 25/08/2017 22:22

I imagine you go through alot of cleaners

NoParticularPattern · 25/08/2017 22:22

Wait have I got this right? You have a cleaner, she cleans your house. Accidentally spills your dettol on the floor and now you are going crackers because it might be deathly toxic to your cats and your child?

If you were so concerned about it then why would you have it in the house? There are much better things to disinfect with than dettol, stuff that doesn't smell so distinctive for a kick off.

The cleaner didn't tell you about the dettol because it isn't dangerous. She didn't drop a bottle of Agent Orange on the floor. Its dettol. You have said yourself that you can't leave windows open overnight so why would you have expected your neighbour or the cleaner to do the same whilst you weren't there?

You're bonkers. For goodness sake sack the poor woman and let her work for someone who doesn't allow herself to be whipped into a frenzy by her mother over a bottle of disinfectant that you had purchased in the first place!

Bahhhhhumbug · 25/08/2017 22:24

Anyone else imagining an episode of Columbus based on this investigating the suspicious deaths of two cats and an elderly neighbour ? I can just imagine him doing that thing where he went to leave then came back in saying 'One more thing ,you say nothing was disturbed but there was a strong smell of Dettol ? ' ............No ? .....just me then.

PoorYorick · 25/08/2017 22:24

You do sound as though the fumes might have addled you a bit.

goldensyrupisshit · 25/08/2017 22:25

You do know you can bathe in Dettol ?

Sara107 · 25/08/2017 22:25

One of the uses of Dettol listed on the bottle used to be as a bath additive (why you would need disinfectant in your bath I don't know). So I think the smell is unlikely to kill anyone, especially with the window open.

OhWhatFuckeryIsThisNow · 25/08/2017 22:26

She's not using zoflora? Sack her now.

NoParticularPattern · 25/08/2017 22:27

Sorry I missed the post about how she brings her own things. However my point still stands. If the smell of dettol was enough to whip you into a frenzy then surely you should have told her that she is not to use dettol in the house?!

Anyway I still think you're crackers. Wikipedia tells you Elvis is still alive sometimes. Its not always truthful!!

BanjoPier · 25/08/2017 22:27

You do realise that you need to report back first thing tomorrow or we'll all be forever wondering if you perished from Dettol poisoning in your sleep.

VacuousAndVacated · 25/08/2017 22:27

did she have it in the house - or did the cleaner bring it
does the cleaner hate cats - did you think of that?
Dettol is made of chemicals

gingergenius · 25/08/2017 22:28

Are you Phyllis?

Nuttynoo · 25/08/2017 22:30

Clean your own house then OP.

Gabilan · 25/08/2017 22:30

oxygen and water are organic

Organic what? Oxygen is an element, it's on the periodic table, with all the other chemicals.

Water is a chemical compound. Also called H2O or dihydrogen monoxide, as in this well known joke, reported here

Sadat40 · 25/08/2017 22:31

If you're concerned Google the safety data sheet for it (stupid phone won't let me copy link), it's fine.

NotACleverName · 25/08/2017 22:32

Are you Phyllis?

Ah now it all makes sense 😁

SandyDenny · 25/08/2017 22:33

oxygen and water are organic

No they're not, organic chemicals contain must contain carbon, I'm not sure what point you're making

MissMalteser · 25/08/2017 22:35

Op yabvu, the cleaner obviously thought she had cleaned it thoroughly and the smell has built up over time, have you been happy with her so far? Also in these circumstances you don't 'sack' a cleaner, you stop using her services...

VacuousAndVacated · 25/08/2017 22:35

do you mean all the other elements?
it would have to be a rather large table to have all the chemicals
are cabbages made of compounds?

OhtoblazeswithElvira · 25/08/2017 22:41

Hahaha loving the Colombo thing Bahhhhumbug Grin
