AIBU to sack cleaner after Dettol spillage and she didn't tell me???

We have just got home after being away and our cleaner came yesterday.
She has spilled what seems to be an entire bottle of Dettol in the kids room, washed it, left it and didn't tell us.
Why it was being used in there I'm not sure, I think more likely she was carrying it and dropped it.
We got back, all windows shut and a boiling hot day today as could smell the Dettol stink as soon as we opened the front door.
I texted and asked and she said yes she has spilled in in our child's room but washed it so no stain and went home.
Surely the fumes are dangerous from Dettol?
We've opened the window and moved her in with us for tonight but how on earth do you get the smell out?
It absolutely stinks.
Aibu to sack her?

Yes, I meant all the other elements.
Cabbages consist entirely of chemicals, some in compound form others in elemental form. (Though like most plant matter it will be mainly C, H and O, combined as compounds).

Dorsetwayoflife · 25/08/2017 22:44

My DM used to add it to her bath Confused and she's still going strong at 72.

This thread has made my evening! 👏👏👏

Sadat40
I can only find articles saying inhalation can cause affects such as chest issues

Coughing, breathlessness and so on

I didn't give it to her! People are not reading it thoroughly.

"One of the uses of Dettol listed on the bottle used to be as a bath additive (why you would need disinfectant in your bath I don't know)."
My mum used to do this but she never explained why. I suspect it was lady garden issues but since she was of a generation that made me hide my tampons in case dad saw them and had a fit of the vapours (or maybe he was inhaling the dettol.......). Now I am just stuck with an image of lady gardens and zoflora cos that had flowers on the bottle.
Can someone enlighten me, was it really the case of a generation that thought fannies were so icky they needed to be disinfected regularly? Dettol seems major compared to the vaj deodorants my generation were opposed to.........

PetitFilous123 · 25/08/2017 22:51

I love the smell of dettol, if I could get a reed defuser with the scent of Dettol I would

Jaxhog · 25/08/2017 22:51

Accidents happen, and she thought she'd cleared it up. End of story.

SpamHeadedBastard · 25/08/2017 22:52

Oh my! My dog has had diarrhoea today so I've gone through almost a full bottle of Dettol cleaning up. Does anyone know if I need to put my dog in a Haz-Mat suit until the smell goes?

BabychamSocialist · 25/08/2017 22:54

Dettol won't kill you. Christ, they used to sniff it behind the bike sheds when I was a teenager!

SabineUndine · 25/08/2017 22:54

My dad liked Dettol in his bath too. No ladygarden. To him it was all the perfumes of Arabia.

why you would need disinfectant in your bath I don't know)

Because Dettol is also an antiseptic.

OP, just be aware, if you breathe in any cleaning product, you can get chest issues (such as the poster above who said some had aggravated their DH asthma.) It's rare though and dependant on numerous factors. None of which apply according to the information you have posted.

I know on p6 you state you know you are BU, but if you are still Googling random things on the WWW, you obviously are still freaked out by this. Please don't be. The worst is that you will have a patch where all the organisms that were there, have been killed off. Bet you won't notice it after a good airing.

Evening all. We appreciate the reports on this thread, but not the troll hunting that's been going on here. We've already removed some troll hunting posts and personal attacks, which broke Talk Guidelines.
We'll continue to take down any more posts in this vein too. Thank you.

Germgirl · 25/08/2017 23:03

My dad gargles with Dettol. At least he did until it burnt his throat. His GP just shook her head at his stupidity.
Anyway, he survived. And so will you and your cats Op.

Cherrytart6 · 25/08/2017 23:03

Read the info properly. The link says it's not known if the ONE DEATH was due to inhalation of fumes from buckets of Dettol kept around the home of a chap suffering OCD or through him direct digesting. They must use loads in hospital and it's in lots of products. Stop over reacting.

Imsorrynow · 25/08/2017 23:05

I have a (vague) recollection of being bathed in Detol as a child.
Not regularly! Probably when we were unwell.
Poor cleaner.

maddiemookins16mum · 25/08/2017 23:06

I've flippin set my kitchen on fire making popcorn fgs!!!!

CaoNiMartacus · 25/08/2017 23:06

Death by Dettol!!! 🤣

Icecreambythesea · 25/08/2017 23:08

Here's a link to the material safety data sheet for Dettol. www.countrywidehealthcare.co.uk/coshh/repository/SA-6269.pdf I hope it'll help put your mind at ease about it's safety.

PollytheDolly · 25/08/2017 23:09

OP - chill the fuck out.

Are you all still alive?

Yes?

Good. 😷

angelikacpickles · 25/08/2017 23:09

How do you know she spilled a whole bottle? It was probably nothing like a full bottle. If she brings her own products then you have no idea how much was in the bottle to start with.

Sayyouwill · 25/08/2017 23:17

@angelikacpickles exactly or how much came out. It could have been a small volume at a fast pace which meant it was more spread out.
You're only tip off was the smell which, as has been said, could intensify over the day. And as your neighbour who came into your house approximately 6 times since the 'incident' didn't notice the smell, it really can't have been that bad

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 23:26

Icecreambythesea,
Thankyou. I did see that on google but it gives advice about " inhalation " of it, what to do and so on so I assumed it was a risk but I think I may have read it wrong?
