AIBU to sack cleaner after Dettol spillage and she didn't tell me???

We have just got home after being away and our cleaner came yesterday.
She has spilled what seems to be an entire bottle of Dettol in the kids room, washed it, left it and didn't tell us.
Why it was being used in there I'm not sure, I think more likely she was carrying it and dropped it.
We got back, all windows shut and a boiling hot day today as could smell the Dettol stink as soon as we opened the front door.
I texted and asked and she said yes she has spilled in in our child's room but washed it so no stain and went home.
Surely the fumes are dangerous from Dettol?
We've opened the window and moved her in with us for tonight but how on earth do you get the smell out?
It absolutely stinks.
Aibu to sack her?

I wish I had a cleaner to sack in the first place! Grin

HungerOfThePine · 25/08/2017 23:32

Cats have a massively stronger sense of smell than dogs (fact of the day) they would have gave the dettol a wide berth if it offended them. It might stink op but I doubt it will cause any harm unless anyone is asthmatic.

Your cleaner maybe should have mentioned it but if she thought she had dealt with it then I can assume she didn't want to worry you over presumably nothing.

PollytheDolly · 25/08/2017 23:41

OP you sound incredibly anxious about this, in all seriousness. I'd keep all the windows open and wrap up warm in bed if you're that worried.

You will all be fine I am sure!

Liiinoo · 25/08/2017 23:48

OP - AIBU
MN - Yes
OP - No I'm not. Me and my mum are right. You are all wrong.

Out of interest OP, what would you do if you had spilt the Dettol?

crookedhooker · 26/08/2017 01:21

Adds Dettol to shopping list for tomorrow

Bahhhhhumbug · 26/08/2017 04:41

Ohtoblazes Thank you and clearly l meant 'Columbo' not 'Columbus'. Bloody auto correct.

Bahhhhhumbug · 26/08/2017 05:14

'Enough with the smell already.....just one more thing.....do you think l could soak my mac in that stuff ? '

Please sack her so she could work for a normal person.

SheSaidHeSaid · 26/08/2017 06:14

Erm, you do realise that accidents do happen, don't you?. What was the cleaner meant to do, leave all doors and windows open to let it vent (And have you being burgled)?!

This has to win the most redic aibu I've seen for a while.

SparklyMorning · 26/08/2017 06:33

You just can't get decent staff these days..............

Louiselouie0890 · 26/08/2017 07:19

Surely if you can die from breathing it in it wouldn't be sold commercially. She clearly didn't think the smell would get stronger and as she had cleaned it didn't think there was an issue to tell you. As you know some stuff I'd bad for cats I don't understand why you wouldn't see what stuff she uses in the first place. Anyway open the windows tell her not to use the stuff and move on

kaytee87 · 26/08/2017 07:27

Dettol is safe for pets and humans. The only toxic ingredient is chloroxylenol and it's only toxic if it's consumed. There are no 'fumes' only a smell which will not hurt you.

Rinkydinkypink · 26/08/2017 07:30

I think you need to sack your neighbour as well then. Either she didn't check on the cats or knee and didn't tell you either.

YABU

IroningMountain · 26/08/2017 07:42

Did you tell her Dettol had to be treated like toxic waste beforehand? More than a little unreasonable to assume she had the same extreme views as you.

When my 3 were tiny I often used to spray the clear Dettol spray on the carpet if there were milk spillages. I use the Dettol laundry cleaner to get bo smell now out of their smelly teen clothes. I use Ecover for everything else so not a liberal chemical user. All 3 are v fit and healthy teens even after their Dettol exposure.Hmm

TheLionQueen1 · 26/08/2017 07:52

OP your original post doesn't mention cats at all but concern for smell and the kids room, when you are told YABU then you start to mention the cats and it all becomes about them?!

Also how can you possibly expect a cleaner to hire a steam cleaner and rectify what I would say is a small mistake? Does she drive to collect this steam cleaner? Given that hiring one would probably cost her over what she is paid, do you honestly think this is is reasonable?!

Mammysin · 26/08/2017 08:22

I have reflected on this overnight . Have you considered that your elderly cats might be depressed or suicidal even? They manufacture an "accident" in your child's bedroom knowing that the cleaner will use dettol ? They pounce as she tries to clear up spilling the bottle and gulp greedy lung ups knowing the end is near. No one ever suspects the cats! ( Miss Marple, I thank you)

Mammysin · 26/08/2017 08:23

Greedy lungfuls

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 26/08/2017 08:32

Anyone else going out Dettol shopping today?

Shall we go together? Make it into an outing?

Stinkycleanhouse · 26/08/2017 09:10

It's quite sad you've " reflected " on it overnight only to come back to be rude.
Anyhow she could have used OUR steam cleaner, nobody would have expected her to go and hire one!
For all those saying it can't be harmful, I only thought it was after some websites suggest inhalation can be dangerous - I'm not sure why this is so confusing for you all as if you google it, it will bring up the same.

AIBU to sack cleaner after Dettol spillage and she didn't tell me???
Janus · 26/08/2017 09:25

If she uses her own cleaning products you have no idea how much was in the bottle, it could have been a teaspoon or a third of a bottle, etc. When I was young my mum just to put dettol in our bath (no idea why)!!
I'm sure having a good sniff of it is not toxic.
Poor lady cleaned it up, there's no stain so there can't be any of it 'neat' left as you'd see it. She cleaned the accident up, I'd not expect to be told unless something was broken.
Sorry but YABU.

ShutTheFridgeUp · 26/08/2017 09:33

This link shows it is toxic " when unintentionally breathed in "

Just make sure that you all breathe it in intentionally and all should be ok.

catsarenice · 26/08/2017 09:47

On the bottle they only warn of contact with eyes and swallowing - no mention of fumes (or cats!)

Fekko · 26/08/2017 09:50

Well lesson learned. No one died and hopefully the smell has disappeared.

CecilyP · 26/08/2017 10:04

Surely if anyone was at risk, it would have been the cleaner who would have been inhaling the neat fumes while cleaning it up! If she is fine then you'll all be fine. Just keep the windows open - it's certainly warm enough. Just think, it could have happened in the middle of winter.
