We have just got home after being away and our cleaner came yesterday.
She has spilled what seems to be an entire bottle of Dettol in the kids room, washed it, left it and didn't tell us.
Why it was being used in there I'm not sure, I think more likely she was carrying it and dropped it.
We got back, all windows shut and a boiling hot day today as could smell the Dettol stink as soon as we opened the front door.
I texted and asked and she said yes she has spilled in in our child's room but washed it so no stain and went home.
Surely the fumes are dangerous from Dettol?
We've opened the window and moved her in with us for tonight but how on earth do you get the smell out?
It absolutely stinks.
Aibu to sack her?

I think it was meant to imply only a germ would hate dettol so much op. Maybe try and get it deleted no one is reading past first post and you'll keep getting grief!

If someone spills ANYTHING with a strong smell, then it's just good manners to own up, whether it's dettol or Chanel no. 5. The cleaner must have known the smell would linger. And it's really not ideal in a kids bedroom. And ha ha ha at my 4 yo sleeping on the sofa...

I probably wouldn't be worried about poisoning (so that bit is pretty UR) but my DH is asthmatic so fairly innocuous things can have quite a big impact on his breathing.

I'd probably send her a text saying pleas can you let us know if you splil something smelly as we would have arenaged for a friend to sort it out. And maybe buy your own products from now on

Jesus you need to go and live in the real world where people have genuine problems. You are being SO unreasonable I wonder if you are actually serious? Poor woman. I can totally see why she was too scared to tell you.

Why don't people rtft before commenting. I originally did to say yabu which you have now recognised that you over reacted a tad. People don't need to be mean, or infer that your cleaner is working in terrible conditions. So I think I'd ask for this to be deleted op as you'll just get more of the same.

MamaMagellanic · 28/08/2017 08:58

It was a joke, lighten up.

OP, I hope the smell fades.

Dumbo412 · 28/08/2017 09:11

It's dettol fgs!!

FinallyDecidedOnUserName · 28/08/2017 09:17

Shame that you've had that experience but if you're happy with all other cleaning aspects I'd let it go & air the room. Not pleasant to come home to after travelling and being tired - hopefully it's aired out by now. This was once happened to me but was tcp - smell faded eventually.

The bottle was probably not full, may have had only a small bit left.

OP you are concerned about your cats and children but show no concern about your cleaner or neighbour breathing the dettol in? If I were you I would reflect on this.

The smell probably only was intense because the house was shut up. As soon as you opened your windows the smell will dissipate.

Ask your cleaner to use spray bottles which are less of a spill risk but please don't sack her. She did clean the spill up.

Do the cats have a cat flap? They probably avoided the area and found somewhere less smelly not the teens room.

I use laundry dettol on my washing and we are all still alive, my cat breathes in the dettol on my clothes when I hug him and sleeps on my dettol washed bed he even ventures into the depths of the teens rooms now.
