AIBU to sack cleaner after Dettol spillage and she didn't tell me???

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 20:42

We have just got home after being away and our cleaner came yesterday.
She has spilled what seems to be an entire bottle of Dettol in the kids room, washed it, left it and didn't tell us.
Why it was being used in there I'm not sure, I think more likely she was carrying it and dropped it.
We got back, all windows shut and a boiling hot day today as could smell the Dettol stink as soon as we opened the front door.
I texted and asked and she said yes she has spilled in in our child's room but washed it so no stain and went home.
Surely the fumes are dangerous from Dettol?
We've opened the window and moved her in with us for tonight but how on earth do you get the smell out?
It absolutely stinks.
Aibu to sack her?

Op what would you have done if you had accidentally dropped thr dettol or other cleaning fluid on a floor?

Clean it up and wait for the smell to go?

Exactly.

Oh my God you are so lucky that that's all you have to worry about

Gabilan · 25/08/2017 21:51

This link shows it is toxic " when unintentionally breathed in "

I suspect that means breathing in a large amount of fumes or the liquid itself.

I would just tell her the Dettol smell was very strong and ask her to let you know if anything like that happens again. Maybe run through with her which cleaning products you'd prefer her to use. (My understanding of being a freelancer is that she has to provide her own tools and cleaning products).

Serin · 25/08/2017 21:52

Oooh the power of actually sacking someone Hmm

HamishsMomma · 25/08/2017 21:53

WOW! after DSs birth - episiotomy - to assist with keeping area, stitches etc clean MW recommended salt births and alternatively Dettol ones. I much preferred Dettol - did help too - and this was only a couple of years ago! However OP you obviously want to get rid of her so no amount of good advice is going to calm you.

NotACleverName · 25/08/2017 21:53

Op what would you have done if you had accidentally dropped thr dettol or other cleaning fluid on a floor?

She probably would've had a conniption about her child/cats/other assorted creatures/neighbour knocking back Dettol shots and expired completely.

AtomHeart · 25/08/2017 21:54

She wiped it up so you should all be OK.

Dettol man had a lot more than a cleaned up spillage in his flat.

Don't worry.

YABU.

What planet are you on?!

I feel sorry for the cleaner.

Gabilan · 25/08/2017 21:56

you are so lucky that that's all you have to worry about

The OP could have all sorts of things going on but just choose to post on this one thing. If I post about a problem on MN it would not be the worst thing going on in my life.

SandunesAndRainclouds · 25/08/2017 21:56

I'd only sack the cleaner if the house didn't smell of dettol...

might have to have a sniff now

VacuousAndVacated · 25/08/2017 21:56

Stinky - ignore the haters.
Dettol is made of chemicals, and everyone here knows that chemicals are very bad.
Not everyone on mumsnet is as thick as 2 short planks.
Go with your heart!

TheRollingCrone · 25/08/2017 22:00

Why don't you buy her Method products to use?

You sound overwrought.

ChocolateWombat · 25/08/2017 22:00

OP isn't suited to having a cleaner in the house. She sounds like a control freak who is never goi g to be happy about what someone else is doing and who has no sense of what a sackable offence is and what isn't.
Fine if she's a control freak. Fine if she doesn't like strong smells. However, if you employ someone you have to allow them to do their job and to have reasonable expectations...and as far as I can tell, this cleaner has done nothing to deserve sacking.

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 22:00

I agree I've over reacted.
As I said a few pages ago I posted here because I've never had a cleaner and wanted to know if I was being unreasonable.
Clearly I was so I'm glad I asked.

OP posts:
Gabilan · 25/08/2017 22:00

what we want to hear is if you are prepared to consider that your original idea might be unreasonable, given people for 7 pages have said it was

The OP said she was BU on page 6.

Dettol is made of chemicals, and everyone here knows that chemicals are very bad

Given that oxygen and water are chemicals, I'm really hoping that's sarcasm.

feathermucker · 25/08/2017 22:02

Open the windows.

Get a grip.

Resume normal life.

BritInUS1 · 25/08/2017 22:04

YABU

What did you expect her to do? She cleaned it up and there was no damage.

Should couldn't leave the window open as no-one was there.

She probably thought it would have gone by the time you got back x

ChocolateWombat · 25/08/2017 22:05

Sorry I had missed that OP accepted she was being unreasonable about sacking cleaner. It is good to see someone prepared to be open to the idea that their thought actually was unreasonable.

Still maintain that OP should consider if she is suited to having a cleaner or if she is too up tight and control freakish for it to work. Will there always be something like this that each cleaner does which seems unacceptable? Perhaps I'm wrong in my interpretation here, but OP does seem very anxious and worried.....not great to have an employer like that!

Paddington68 · 25/08/2017 22:06

Have you consider writing for the Daily Mail?

VeryCunningStunt · 25/08/2017 22:07

My mother hasn't helped as when I called her she said there was a report of a man dying and it was never proven whether the Dettol was ingested or inhaled

😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

Sack the idiotic serf. It's a clear case of attempted murder.

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 22:09

That is indeed what the article indicated although upon reading further he clearly had issues as has bottles of the stuff everywhere
I was just worried about the cats really but I was being previous

OP posts:
Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 22:09

Precious

OP posts:
VacuousAndVacated · 25/08/2017 22:10

no sarcasm
oxygen and water are organic
Dettol is obviously not and so as stink says is bad
