AIBU to sack cleaner after Dettol spillage and she didn't tell me???

We have just got home after being away and our cleaner came yesterday.
She has spilled what seems to be an entire bottle of Dettol in the kids room, washed it, left it and didn't tell us.
Why it was being used in there I'm not sure, I think more likely she was carrying it and dropped it.
We got back, all windows shut and a boiling hot day today as could smell the Dettol stink as soon as we opened the front door.
I texted and asked and she said yes she has spilled in in our child's room but washed it so no stain and went home.
Surely the fumes are dangerous from Dettol?
We've opened the window and moved her in with us for tonight but how on earth do you get the smell out?
It absolutely stinks.
Aibu to sack her?

Lol if the smell of dettol is your biggest problem you have a seriously cushy life !

Fekko · 25/08/2017 20:50

You have opened all the windows haven't you?

safariboot · 25/08/2017 20:50

Air out the house thoroughly and check exactly which product she used! The Dettol brand covers a wide range now, and the active ingredient in 'original' Dettol is indeed toxic when too much is breathed in or swallowed, even though it can be safely used to clean skin.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chloroxylenol

If you have any pets, watch out for them showing symptoms of poisoning.

On the one hand it seems harsh to immediately dismiss your cleaner for a one-off mishap. On the other hand if the stuff she used was indeed hazardous and she hasn't dealt with it properly then that's pretty serious.

Katedotness1963 · 25/08/2017 20:50

I love the smell of Dettol! I used to put it in my bath and soak there. I appear to be fine many years later.

I wonder where I can get my hands on some Dettol....

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 20:50

I thought inhaling Dettol was dangerous
I can't describe the smell, it's a big 500ml bottle she's dropped and the bedroom is only small so it absolutely stinks and even though the room is upstairs the minute the front door was opened it was apparent
We've only had her for a few months so I don't know her very well as I'm not home when she comes

You sound so precious!

safariboot · 25/08/2017 20:52

(PS: As mentioned, it's probable the fumes were nowhere near as bad when she left, if the spill had soaked into something and she thought she'd washed it out but hadn't properly.)

stormytherabbit · 25/08/2017 20:52

You're a real piece of work. Sack her because you're a shit employer and she deserves better.

PigOnStilts · 25/08/2017 20:52

you're such a tube haha

SuperStormborn · 25/08/2017 20:53

It was an accident, she didn't kick it over just for the hell of it Hmm why on earth is it a sackable offence ??

RhubardGin · 25/08/2017 20:53

you're such a tube

I haven't heard that in ages!

Tube Grin

Fekko · 25/08/2017 20:53

Don't be mean you two, she's only asking the question.

KingJoffreysRestingCuntface · 25/08/2017 20:53

I bet it smells amazing.

Anyone else sitting in a mundane smelling house with Dettol envy?

Wish I had some.

GriefLeavesItsMark · 25/08/2017 20:53

The good news is detol is only toxic if you drink it. And technically I am not sure if it is fumes.

Fekko · 25/08/2017 20:54

I bet it smells like primary school.

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 20:54

Safari boot,
Your link contains what my mum was talking about

Sayyouwill · 25/08/2017 20:54

What were her options though? Whether she told you or not the smell would have still been there. She thought she cleaned it up, I imagine she doesn't tell you about everything she cleans up? The smell probably got stronger in the heat. She couldn't exactly leave your windows open or anything like that could she?

It's so harsh to just fire her from one accident. Have you never made a mistake at work before? What if you sacking her was the difference between her being able to afford rent/mortgage or not?

Don't be so mean, tell her what you would like her to do if that or a similar situation ever occurs again and move on

KeiraKnightleyActsWithHerTeeth · 25/08/2017 20:54

If you sack her can I have her number? I need a reliable cleaner who would know to correct her mistakes.

Disn3yN3rd · 25/08/2017 20:55

It was an accident. I doubt she realised the smell would upset you nor do I think she would have thought to tell you she spilt it after having cleaned it up.

Timefortea99 · 25/08/2017 20:55

A massive overreaction. Open the windows for a couple of days.

Stinkycleanhouse · 25/08/2017 20:55

It is actually dangerous if inhaled according to the above link

Wikipedia is well know for being 100% reliable

2cats2many · 25/08/2017 20:56

Yep. Pretty much a united response of YABU. Any of it sinking in OP?

justforthisthread101 · 25/08/2017 20:56

@stinkycleanhouse you have posted in AIBU. Every single poster is telling you you are being unreasonable. Repeatedly telling us how smelly it is isn't going to change our minds.

I hope she finds gainful employment with someone more reasonable soon.

calmanban · 25/08/2017 20:56

Are you quite well?
