Male beauticians and waxing!!

Emboo19 · 25/08/2017 12:46

This is based on a friends experience, not mine and it's not so much a AIBU. But we've been discussing it at length and I'm interested in others thoughts.
So would you be ok with a male beautician doing intimate waxing? Would it depend on quite how intimate, so a bikini wax would be ok, but a all off not so much?

I'm not actually sure myself. A part of me thinks it's no different to a male doctor or nurse and I'd be fine with that. Definitely wouldn't have a problem with any other beauty treatments being done by a man, but waxing that invloves no underwear, I'm not sure!!

I wouldn't let a man wax me.

I've had hundreds of gynae and urology exams , procedures and scans and think that whole system is awful. People walk in and out freely whilst legs up, don't introduce themselves, had a doctor happily declare he had not a clue what he was looking at and he would just 'poke around with catheter, you tell ne if I hit the right hole'. When I asked a male surgeon about having a cystoscopy a few months ago as to how long it would take , he said 'legs up and open, camera in, camera out, done'.

Women aren't always much better but I do feel more comfortable with them generally. At least they will have had intimate examiantions too and should understand how undignified and distressing it can feel.

Ttbb · 25/08/2017 14:32

Even doctors have been known to be perverts. Beautician are held to far lower standards. I wouldn't risk it.

SonicBoomBoom · 25/08/2017 14:37

I wouldn't like it.

I'm not entirely comfortable with male doctors doing obs/gyn things either, although I have had procedures done by them. I found male doctors much more rough and less gentle than women, and I'd worry that a male waxer would be similar.

TheNaze73 · 25/08/2017 14:37

I think it's down to personal preference. I've had B,S & C performed by both men & women & it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

WhingyNinja · 25/08/2017 14:43

Same as GreyOwls in that the best massage I've ever had was by a lovely male therapist which didn't bother me at all, however, he was not touching my vulva so it's a little different. He needed to do extensive work on my glutes and hip flexor a though!

I don't get waxes but if I did it wouldn't bother me.

wrenika · 25/08/2017 14:50

Nope, I don't think it'd bother me. In fact, I think I'd rather have a man cause I feel like a woman is judging my grooming habits as a fellow female! I find men easier to deal with all round.

notsobeachready · 25/08/2017 14:51

On the fence here. DS is a beauty therapist and I hear the horror stories etc so in a way, if a bloke has chosen the career, as much power to him as any other beautician.

However.

Drs/nurses see vulvas/vaginas in a clinical setting. I'm a nursing auxiliary so a fanny is as everyday as a foot to me.
I'm not so sure how I would feel about a chap waxing an intimate area. Maybe that's my own gender bias showing through Confused

ExConstance · 25/08/2017 14:52

I really would not mind a bit, which is strange really because I won't share a changing room with naked women and use the mixed one with cubicles at the leisure centre.

problembottom · 25/08/2017 14:53

I wouldn't give it a second thought. You get good and bad beauticians and that's nothing to do with their gender.

lunar1 · 25/08/2017 14:53

Wouldn't bother me, a male midwife delivered ds2. The female beautician I go to for a Hollywood wax has a wife. They are professionals doing their job.

kali110 · 25/08/2017 14:54

Wouldn't have a problem, iv had smears, examinations with a male doctor too.
Waxers do get qualifications ( atleast reputable ones do).
Would Have no problem with a massage either.

bengalcat · 25/08/2017 14:54

Not botherered

Twinkie1 · 25/08/2017 14:57

Wouldn't bother me at all to be honest.

itsbetterthanabox · 25/08/2017 14:58

I'm a beauty therapist and would not like to work on male clients for some treatments i.e. Body waxing and massage. So look at jobs accordingly.

I wouldn't like a male doing these treatments on me either. I'd choose to go to a female.

KungFuPandaWorksOut16 · 25/08/2017 15:05

I know it as an individuals choice, but what is the difference in a man doing it vs a woman?

If they have the qualifications and have been deemed able to do their job, I'm not bothered whether they are male or female.

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 15:06

I've been thinking about this and have had a chat to a friend who runs a salon. It turns out that they have a male member of staff who does nails who is currently training to wax. Friend said that if someone refused to be waxed by him they wouldn't be welcome in her salon.

So I guess it's down to choice. You could chose to go somewhere else if you don't like a male waxer and the salon can chose to refuse your custom.

Mellington · 25/08/2017 15:10

I wouldn't mind at all, nothing could be less sexual that waxing my hairy bits!

Although oddly I won't go to female hairdressers, I've always found men to give a better cut.

Teddy7878 · 25/08/2017 15:11

I wouldn't like it. Ive had a straight male masseuse once and it just made me feel self conscious even though he was professional throughout. I know it's probably more my issues but I guess we all have our own levels of what makes us feel comfortable. I'd not be overly chuffed with a male HCP if it was for something like a smear test or STD check. For something like giving birth I wouldn't give two hoots though

Emboo19 · 25/08/2017 15:13

Friend said that if someone refused to be waxed by him they wouldn't be welcome in her salon.

I wouldn't use any salon beauty or hair who didn't let me choose who did my treatments. I use one woman and one women only to do my eyebrows, she's the best and it means booking her ages in advance but I only use her, yet she doesn't do my nails (same salon) but another woman who I find much better for me.
I suppose on the first visit, you wouldn't know. Although I did with my brows as my mum uses her, so it's always been her for me.

CanIBuffalo · 25/08/2017 15:17

Absolutely wouldn't be happening. I'm aware if the double standards and yes I have sons.
The level of training and registration required for anyone else who was male and allowed anywhere near my fanjo is far far higher. In any case, I ask for a female.
I appreciate that this is entirely my issue but the whole idea makes me desperately uncomfortable.

CanIBuffalo · 25/08/2017 15:19

So uncomfortable that I want to pop in from the garden and look out my pearls to clutch tight.

StarHeartDiamond · 25/08/2017 15:24

Skaross- your friend would turn down business over it?! That's a bit shortsighted. Why not say fine and accommodate the customer?

Emboo19 · 25/08/2017 15:27

Does your friend insist on her all female workers waxing men then Skaross? I know at my salon at least one of the women won't do intimate wax on men.

OP posts:
stitchglitched · 25/08/2017 15:31

Skacross I hope your friend warns her customers in advance so they can avoid giving her their business.

sundayfeeling · 25/08/2017 15:37

I'm surprised at a lot of these posts.
I regularly use a male masseur because he's brilliant.
I have also had my wax done by a male therapist.
It does not bother me in the slightest. It has never occurred to me that it should bother me.
