Male beauticians and waxing!!

Emboo19 · 25/08/2017 12:46

This is based on a friends experience, not mine and it's not so much a AIBU. But we've been discussing it at length and I'm interested in others thoughts.
So would you be ok with a male beautician doing intimate waxing? Would it depend on quite how intimate, so a bikini wax would be ok, but a all off not so much?

I'm not actually sure myself. A part of me thinks it's no different to a male doctor or nurse and I'd be fine with that. Definitely wouldn't have a problem with any other beauty treatments being done by a man, but waxing that invloves no underwear, I'm not sure!!

OP posts:

Is it the fact it's opposite sex people object to or the potential for attraction? Would people feel awkward having a wax carried out by a lesbian?

GreyOwls · 25/08/2017 13:20

It wouldn't bother me at all. some of the best massages I've had have been from male massage therapists who were completely ;professional.

Benedikte2 · 25/08/2017 13:23

Health professionals have a code of professional conduct and one needs to trust them re intimate procedures and a male doctore will invariably ask if you prefer a nurse etc to be present.
This is an altogether different scenario and I can't image many women would feel comfortable in exposing themselves to this procedure with a male therapist

bevelino · 25/08/2017 13:23

I have never heard of a male beautician undertake bikini waxes and I am struggling to believe that any professional salon would permit it.

Male GPs offer a female chaperone for intimate procedures on women for professional reasons. With respect to all beauticians everywhere they cannot be placed in the same professional category as a doctor or a nurse. OP I think your friend is having you on.

LostInShoebiz · 25/08/2017 13:26

Make beauticians do exist and are held to the same standards as females. They need qualifications and wouldn't gain them if they didn't behave appropriately.

redexpat · 25/08/2017 13:28

Legwax would be ok with me.
Not sure about a bikini wax though.

NicolasFlamel · 25/08/2017 13:28

I wouldn't feel comfortable with that.

Opposite sex. How does one identify a lesbian by sight?

stitchglitched · 25/08/2017 13:31

It is it being opposite sex that bothers me. A lesbian is still a woman.

SummerKelly · 25/08/2017 13:32

I had a male masseur at a spa once, he massaged right up to my knicker line and I felt uncomfortable but I didn't feel able to say anything for fear I was being unreasonable, but I've never had a female to that.

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 25/08/2017 13:33

I want all intimate body procedures that I have to be done by females.

PaganGoddessBrigid · 25/08/2017 13:35

I get the school knicker wax. My female beautician is always trying to roll my knickers back, but I say ''nope!, not going away, thank you but no!''.

It's not from embarrassment. I'd never have a holly wood but if I were inclined I'd definitely feel even more uncomfortable if the treatment was to be executed by a male. And I imagine it feels like an execution.

Titanz · 25/08/2017 13:35

And people wonder why some professions are more female and male dominated.

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 13:36

Wouldn't bother me. I would expect them
To be professional just as I sure they have an expectation to be discriminated against in the workplace.

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 13:37

not to be discriminated against

DamnDeDoubtanceIsSpartacus · 25/08/2017 13:38

How do you mean Titanz?

PaganGoddessBrigid · 25/08/2017 13:38

I agree with posters up thread. A lesbian woman is still a woman. A gay man is not going to be attracted by a woman with her legs akimbo so it must be a dignity thing. I'd rather be waxed by a lesbian woman. I'm sure a lesbian woman has seen better fanjos than my own so I wouldn't delude myself I was any great temptation but I can imagine a gay male beautician being repulsed by a vagina. That would bother me.

stitchglitched · 25/08/2017 13:38

Discrimination is fine when it comes to who does things to your body.

PoppyPopcorn · 25/08/2017 13:39

they are a professional

They are not a "profession" Anyone could set up tomorrow and say they're a beauty therapist and offer to wax you. People working in the beauty industry are unregulated - some have done loads of training and are very good, others are rubbish. There is no quality control.

It's not the same AT ALL as a midwife, nurse or doctor who has been through extensive training, has sat exams and isn't allowed by law to claim they're something which they're not.

HotelEuphoria · 25/08/2017 13:39

Has anyone actually had any intimate beauty treatments done by a male though?

The only guys I ever see doing anything remotely beauty related are the ones in the Vietnamese type nail bars and I never go to those because I have suspicious about the morality of them.

NobodyKnowsTiddlyPom · 25/08/2017 13:40

I had my bikini line lasered some years ago - the person doing it was male. I didn't really mind once I got over the surprise at my initial appointment. I wore underwear the whole time so he never got to see my actual lady bits.

However, I'm not comfortable with male HCPs examining/poking/prodding. I don't refuse it but I'm not comfortable with it. I had a really awful internal examination from a male doctor when I was days away from giving birth. He was really rough and it hurt quite a lot. I also saw a male gynaecologist last year - not only did he pooh-pooh my issues, essentially telling me to 'suck it up, buttercup,' he also gave me an internal examination that was very rough and painful.

LostInShoebiz · 25/08/2017 13:45

I've had a Hollywood done by a man. No problems whatsoever. Just chatted away normally about holidays, families and so on.

stitchglitched · 25/08/2017 13:45

I would never have a wax anyway, but I do get massages and I would turn around and walk back out the door if the masseuse was male. I also wouldn't get a smear test done by a man as there are female nurses available to do it.

I did have a male give me an internal scan recently, I wasn't comfortable but I went through with it as I'd waited a while for the appointment and he was the one doing the clinic. But if I have a choice I will always have a woman.

IloveBanff · 25/08/2017 13:45

CatsAreAssholes "Um no. Wouldn't see a male HCP either."

Why?

noeffingidea · 25/08/2017 13:47

No I wouldn't have any procedure of this type done by a male. I would be ok with a HCP providing intimate care but I don't regard beauticians and masseurs in the same light.
As it happens I don't have anything like this done because I don't like being touched but it would be more bearable coming from a woman.
