Male beauticians and waxing!!

Emboo19 · 25/08/2017 12:46

This is based on a friends experience, not mine and it's not so much a AIBU. But we've been discussing it at length and I'm interested in others thoughts.
So would you be ok with a male beautician doing intimate waxing? Would it depend on quite how intimate, so a bikini wax would be ok, but a all off not so much?

I'm not actually sure myself. A part of me thinks it's no different to a male doctor or nurse and I'd be fine with that. Definitely wouldn't have a problem with any other beauty treatments being done by a man, but waxing that invloves no underwear, I'm not sure!!

I don't think it would bother me, and I get a Hollywood wax if I'm waxing - but I've never actually been in that situation because a male beautician has never been offered as the option. I certainly don't think anyone should feel bad about refusing if they are uncomfortable with it.

Perfectly fine with male HCPs, have had smear tests and a transvaginal ultrasound done by men before.

Fartypant · 25/08/2017 16:38

Oh for goodness sake; she can run her business however she likes...But to suggest it would discriminate against her male employees is just nonsense. I don't believe people are so unaware of the world around them and of history, to not understand 'discrimination' and the intention of anti-discrimination laws/movement. They must be being wilfully stupid

itsbetterthanabox · 25/08/2017 16:45

HABIA is the professional body for beauty therapists.
Not anyone can do it. You can asked to see insurance and certificates.
Day courses exist but are usually uninsurable as they don't teach you enough in terms of practical skill or anatomy and physiology.
Waxing may look easy but it is a learned skill and takes practice and education. I would honestly like to see many of you try to give someone a full leg, brow wax or Brazilian.

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 16:59

Well it take weeks to get an appointment so she's not doing too badly.

bananafish81 · 25/08/2017 16:59

I'd rather have an experienced male waxer than an inexperienced female

My only concern with a male waxer would be how experienced he was - if lots of women aren't comfortable with a male doing their bikini waxes, I'd just wonder how many foofs he'd actually waxed. If I'm lying there hugging my knees to my chest so the waxer can do the entire undercarriage, I want to know they've put a lot of hot wax on a lot of vulvas, before they do the same to mine!

WhatALoadOfOldBollocks · 25/08/2017 17:01

No way. I tolerate male HCPs touching me in intimate places but that's only because I use the NHS and I feel greatful that I'm being treated for "free" as it is. Ideally the only men who would touch me are those I'm fucking, otherwise I don't want their hands on me at all, especially a stranger's.

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 17:03

FFS "wilfully stupid". I could say the same thing about you for not realising that she is actually putting the feelings of a large percent of her customer base first. She cares about her staff enough to do this and doesn't judge people who chose to take their business elsewhere.

stitchglitched · 25/08/2017 17:10

It takes weeks to get an appointment at the moment, but you said the male waxer is still training? So it might not stay that way.

Out of interest, how does allowing women a choice over who carries out an intimate procedure on their body mean that she wouldn't be putting a large percentage of her customer base first? I don't see how these things are related.

Coldilox · 25/08/2017 17:10

I don't get my nethers waxed, I don't get the obsession with getting rid of public hair, but that's another thread. If I did, I can't imagine being concerned about it being a like. I've had massages of men, and regularly go to a male for a sports massage that involves me because g topless, because he's the best I've found.

Nobody is unreasonable for not wanting a man (or anyone) to be I. Contact with intimate areas, imeverybody has different levels of comfort, and everyone had the right to say who can touch them. I do think it's unreasonable to suggest that a man doing waxing must/could be a pervert. If you're uncomfortable, that's fine, you have the right to be, but own that rather than putting the issue of not someone else. (Not suggesting anyone here has said that, but I have had it suggested IRL. Also re make midwives/gynae nurses/gynae doctors Hmm )

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 17:14

A large proportion of her customer base is LGBT, she wants an inclusive environment. Like I said she is happy to refer any uncomfortable customer elswhere.

Roomster101 · 25/08/2017 17:14

Skarossinkplunger I suspect she has very few female customers anyway. If she did she would be turning down a lot of business by insisting that those who don't want a male beautician to do intimate waxing should go elsewhere.

Roomster101 · 25/08/2017 17:20

I do think it's unreasonable to suggest that a man doing waxing must/could be a pervert.

Of course he could be especially as I very much doubt that beauticians, unlike HCP etc can work with very little training and do not have to undergo enhanced DBS checks.

stitchglitched · 25/08/2017 17:22

Just not inclusive to women.

Doobigetta · 25/08/2017 17:33

No, would not allow a male therapist to wax my bikini line, or in fact carry out any other treatment on me. Would make no difference whether he was gay or straight. Wouldn't have the slightest problem with a lesbian therapist. I can be comfortable with a female therapist because I think, we're all women, we're all the same and therefore don't judge each other. I would never be able to have that level of trust with a man. I always ask for a female doctor when I have a smear test. Obviously if I need emergency treatment that would be different.

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 17:38

I just ask her male to female ratio, she reckons about 60% female:

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 17:40

Oh and to clarify her male waxer has been waxing legs and such like for ages. Apparently intimate waxing is a whole other course.

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 17:44

And he's an expert in anal bleaching! And with that nugget of information she went off to work.

Fartypant · 25/08/2017 17:44

A large proportion of her customer base is LGBT

So? Being a lesbian, doesn't make a woman more tolerant of males doing intimate procedures

Fartypant · 25/08/2017 17:45

So, the male waxer your friend employes, mostly waxes MEN?

PaintingByNumbers · 25/08/2017 17:47

Those discriminatory men, wanting a man to wax their private parts, outrageous etc

Sayyouwill · 25/08/2017 17:48

Your female waxed could be a lesbian, your male waxed could be gay. You can't always know these things.

Unless he started to wank himself off while waxing me, I wouldn't care!

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 17:49

As I said her LGBT customers is why she likes her business to hav an inclusive feel.

I'm crap at maths but even I know that 60% females means more clients are women

stitchglitched · 25/08/2017 17:51

It isn't inclusive though. It excludes any women who for various reasons would like to specify a female therapist. Still failing to see the connection between the large LGBT client base and denying women a choice.

Skarossinkplunger · 25/08/2017 17:54

You're failing to understand because you don't want to. I'm out.

Roomster101 · 25/08/2017 17:58

I somehow doubt that many lesbian woman would be comfortable with a man doing intimate waxing..
