Apologies, this is really old so I suspect it has been shared before, but I only just came across it linked to from the comments section of a Guardian article posted earlier. I'd never seen an explanation that made sense to me, but this is food for thought in terms of why large swathes of America supported (and still support I guess) Trump.

Oh, and I see Ivanka has had something to say about the events in Boston (I presume) - unsurprisingly no criticism of dear old dad...

@IvankaTrump
1:2 It was beautiful to see thousands of people across the U.S.A come together today to peacefully denounce bigotry, racism & anti-semitism.

2:2 We must continue to come together, united as Americans! 🇺🇸

Love the story about the German town and the tuba player and actually, creative resistance in general. Wink

newroundhere That's an interesting article. (It's so good ringle linked to it too!) Smile

I thought it was Excellent. Thought provoking - for me anyway.

BiglyBadgers · 20/08/2017 12:21

This video on Twitter is interesting on the history of the Confederate statues in the US. twitter.com/AngryScotland/status/899218458482749440?s=09

cozietoesie · 20/08/2017 12:25

Thanks for that, Bigly.

BiglyBadgers · 20/08/2017 12:34

After watching it I had to go back and find this really odd telegraph articles I noticed this morning. I thought it was strange at the time as it seemed to be trying (not very convincingly) to make out that Lee was actually really nice and all for freeing slaves. That video made me realise how much air an attempted whitewash the article is. It is really quite shocking so soon after Charlottesville

Robert E. Lee wrote to The New York Times to say he planned to free inherited slaves

Was it his decision, or was he offered a chance to decline?

This is a rather long, but really interesting article on women in the alt-right. If you have some time and fancy a read

That Cracked article is an interesting discussion on the differences between rural and city identities, however I do take issue with the fact it talks as if the majority of trump voters were poor. This is not actually the case. Most low income voters actually voted Clinton whereas most middle and high income voters voted for Trump. While I do think there is something in the city versus country perceptions of self and America I don't think the idea that it was an army of disenfranchised working classes that propelled trump to power is backed up by the stats.

Here are some more stats on how different groups voted. Makes interesting reading.

Oops, cross post - I was talking about the valkyrie one!

PerkingFaintly · 20/08/2017 14:24

Interesting interesting... Waiting for a third thing to happen before I stick my neck out on something.

cozietoesie · 20/08/2017 14:39

Here is some interesting stuff from Ms Maddow. I apologise for the background - but you can always watch it with eyes averted (There was an alternative clip but the voices were out of sync which was marginally more annoying.)

I think she overstates Bannon's importance but I guess we'll see. Smile

cozietoesie · 20/08/2017 14:40

Oh come on, Perking. Spill the beans. Wink

Yep, the Trump demographic crosses classes.

C'mon Perking. Wink

Thinking about this will take you even further into the rabbit hole.
It seems the Trump we get is the filtered version.
