Is there another internet?

Some weirdo I met on a dating site claimed he used a different internet to what everyone else uses

Kinda paranoid he may have been able to snoop on me snooping on him . Googling potential dates is normal right?! I thought everyone did it and just didn't admit it

But why would he say that? Could he have been?

First conversation asking about pedo hunters and you don't think he was evil? Really?

Fantasyfumble · 16/08/2017 23:50

Haha it's ok. I've already done the running a mile thing. He's blocked. I'm dating someone etc.

Not in the slightest concerned about him

Would just like to know if there's another internet, and how he may or may not have done his snooping and why on earth I would be so threatening

The What'sapp downloadable ghost apps allow you to read but not show up as online. Next time use one of those apps to stalk read messages.

Fantasyfumble · 16/08/2017 23:52

@e1y1 to be fair I think it was relevant enough. Probably a documentary on at the time or something. I remember it didn't ring any significant alarm bells

Random topic but I'm sure there was a logic to it probably if i remembered it all

The dark web is also nothing to be especially afraid of BTW. It's the same as what has always existed - dodgy bloke selling imported fags in the pub etc. It's not even like the bad stuff has never been online before.

BlondeB83 · 16/08/2017 23:54

Steer clear of anyone involved with the dark web.

Fantasyfumble · 16/08/2017 23:55

@LanaDReye thank you! That will come in handy

JustAnotherPoster00 · 17/08/2017 00:03

The darkweb has been given its nefarious image mainly because google and their like would much prefer you to spend time in their ad driven, metadata collecting section of the internet

RidingWindhorses · 17/08/2017 00:07

I highly doubt he works in "security". There are 100s of men like that online, they spend their life sitting at their pcs in their tinhats.

user1471439240 · 17/08/2017 00:21

There are various third party apps to fiddle with Whatsapp, Whatsdog is one such app.
It is possible to set your last seen to anytime you wish, to freeze it, read messages without updating last seen, mark messages as unread.
It is also possible to have an app collate how many times you open Whatsapp to check messages ie go online, it counts how many times you go online, along with the time.
Whatsapp, while allegedly secure, is a paranoids dream regarding last seen and read reports. It is best to assume they are not corrrect.

OutToGetYou · 17/08/2017 00:22

If he worked in cyber intelligence he'd know better than to say anything like that to you. He'd tell you he was a accountant or something.

He's more likely to be an unemployed dick head who used to develop cobol or something and his uses the Dark Web to moan about ex employers. He was guessing re WhatsApp.

Fantasyfumble · 17/08/2017 00:27

Yes he probably is just a geeky tin foil hat type feeding his paranoia, bless him

I don't really care lol but am massively curious about these WhatsApp fiddling apps and the dark webs non nefarious purposes now

OP posts:
BackieJerkhart · 17/08/2017 00:32

I had been looking at his WhatsApp.

What do you mean looking at his whatsapp? There isnt anything to see on whatsapp other than whether he has replied or not. It isn't like Facebook or twitter.

Huldas · 17/08/2017 00:35

Fantasyfumble I don't use Whatsapp but wonder if there are advanced settings on the app that let you see when a person is checking? As others have said there is no other internet, but there are different skill levels amoung users. Next time i speak to an IT prof (over next couple of days) I will ask for you re the Whatapp views.

Tartyflette · 17/08/2017 00:40

He sounds like a nasty little twerp but to actually threaten you on a dating site is dreadful -- I'd have reported him to the admins/site owners as well as blocking him.
Not the sort of client they would want on their books, I hope.

WhatToDoAboutThis2017 · 17/08/2017 00:49

Nope, not on the WhatsApp app itself there aren't.

Fantasyfumble · 17/08/2017 00:50

@BackieJerkhart clicking into our messages to see if it said online at the top yet

PersianCatLady · 17/08/2017 00:54

Seriously, do you even know what the dark web is??

BackieJerkhart · 17/08/2017 01:03

@BackieJerkhart clicking into our messages to see if it said online at the top yet

Yeah that's it though. That's just checking if he is online. That's hardly stalking! Is that what he had A problem with??

Fantasyfumble · 17/08/2017 01:15

@BackieJerkhart yep I think so... not sure how he knew.

As I say, peculiarly paranoid about me

OP posts:
BackieJerkhart · 17/08/2017 01:18

He can't have known. There is no way to know!

Fantasyfumble · 17/08/2017 01:25

Maybe just pulling my bluff. Was wierd though as obviously I was guilty when he asked

I can't find these ghost apps or Whatsdog on the App Store!

OP posts:
Banchu · 17/08/2017 01:35

Did you ever look at his status videos?

vikingprincess81 · 17/08/2017 03:07

Re whatsapp, even when you have your privacy settings up high (no one can see your 'last seen' time) you still show as being 'online.' You also show as being online if whatsapp is running in the background and you happen to be looking at another webpage. I guess it's possible you look like you're online a lot and he took that to mean you were checking on him? Confused bit weird though!!
If you close all your background apps (on iPhone double click the home button and swipe them up) you'll only show as online when you actually are Grin
But yeah, he sounds like a weirdo!!

vikingprincess81 · 17/08/2017 03:08

'Online' meaning you have the whatsapp app open Wink
