Some weirdo I met on a dating site claimed he used a different internet to what everyone else uses

Kinda paranoid he may have been able to snoop on me snooping on him . Googling potential dates is normal right?! I thought everyone did it and just didn't admit it

But why would he say that? Could he have been?

My privacy settings are so nobody can see when I was last on or if I have read a message but equally that means I don't get the blue ticks either hence I checked if he was online

I think he means a different Operating System, probably something like Linux. If he thinks that's a different internet he's an idiot.

I was going to chime in and say the dark web isn't a different internet, there is no other internet, but someone has beaten me to it!

Whatsapp tells you when someone last viewed a message thread, doesn't it? So if that keeps changing it's obvious you have been checking (I guess).

@LoyaltyAndLobster I can't remember exactly. Think I moaned about another user on the site who had given me enough grief to be scared enough to report to the police.

I don't engage either user anymore. Both blocked etc. Just wondered really why he was particularly paranoid about me.

I'm a fairly average non threatening person...

OP I think it's best that you try and forget about him and be careful about who you choose to talk to online, a lot of people aren't what they make out to be.

Anyone who freely admits they use the dark web is very unlikely to be using it for nefarious purposes.

Well there is a darknet, where criminals and paedophiles allegedly hang out. Apparently very difficult to access

It took me about five minutes to work it out and even I was shocked at how easy it was.

Forgot to add, I only wanted to see what all the fuss was about as some other students on my degree course (Computing & IT) were discussing it.

Tbh I don't think he was evil. He wasn't for me and he was weirdly paranoid about me and weirdly judgemental with quite hilarious assumptions often

But I think one of our first conversations he'd asked what I thought about those pedo hunters which seemed strange but went along the lines of "personally I think they can threaten justice being served by taking the law into their own hands and if they worked with the police I might have more respect for them as who knows what investigations might already be happening" and he seemed in a lot of agreement with that

now I'm thinking maybe he did work in cyber intelligence or something

But that makes me wonder more why on earth there would be anything about me to be paranoid over... and hopeful there's some romantic story like him being undercover rather than me being the wierd one

Paranoid people just get paranoid about random things, it's unlikely to be anything to do with you specifically. Nothing romantic but nothing sinister either, just a bit of a sad lonely man with demons.
