Don't want my 2 year old to wear a kilt. AIBU?

We are invited to a Scottish wedding of a family member, my DS will be 2 years old at the time of the wedding. My DH is Scottish, I am not. Bride and groom are insisting all men must wear kilts including children. I personally do not like kilts, they are also not exactly cheap to buy, feels like waste of money to me especially for a toddler who will wear it once and then it is going to be too small. Shouldn't people be allowed to wear whatever they want or can afford to a wedding? AIBU?

He can wear a kilt with a pull up. Thats not an issue.

Where is the wedding? You will be hiring dh one for the duration of the trip abroad. Adding one in for kids wont bump the cost that much.

This comes down to you just dont want to do it. So yabu.

SpartacusSaiman · 07/08/2017 06:49

and I certainly wouldn't let my son or husband wear one!

Is your husband not a grown man?

Dawnedlightly · 07/08/2017 06:50

£19.50
But that's not the point is it? I have the feeling OP gets cross about lots of things. Confused

YABU

YABU

Would you adhere to an other dress code for a wedding? It's not a big deal. Have a bit of respect for the people getting married!

Cailleach666 · 07/08/2017 06:54

I have never been to a wedding where guests are told what to wear unless a formal position- page boy, bridesmaid, usher etc.

I also live in Scotland and have never heard of a wedding where all men are in kilts.
Many do wear them , but always optional.

Stressalot42 · 07/08/2017 06:58

So it's not the cost? We've established that you can but one at a reasonable price! You've not even tried to just immediately it'll be a waste of money!

You sound quite unnecessarily bolshy!!

Cailleach666 · 07/08/2017 06:59

I'm not a fan of kilts at all, I think they look awful and I certainly wouldn't let my son or husband wear one!

Each to their own.

They have increased in popularity in recent years. Walking through Edinburgh yesterday there were loads of guys in kilts.

PrimalLass · 07/08/2017 07:00

I'm Scottish. I'm not keen on toddlers and babies in formal wear.

FatGirlWithChocolate · 07/08/2017 07:02

I think it would be a shame if your little one was the only one not in a kilt (especially if his daddy is going to be) - and as has been said you can get one really cheaply and sell it on afterwards, so you won't lose out. And, to be honest, if the bride has requested everyone wear kilts, why would you not want to comply for her big day? You get to choose for yours, she gets to choose for hers. How would you feel if someone ignored your wishes?

Stressalot42 · 07/08/2017 07:03

Christ could you imagine if the romes were reversed here and the husband WOULDN"T LET his wife and daughter were traditional outfits or any clothing of their choice!

Dentistlakes · 07/08/2017 07:03

I wouldn't buy one if you don't want to, but the Ines from the tourist shop are relatively cheap. Personally I prefer kids in kilts to suits ( which I find creepy Bd weird for some reason).

Stressalot42 · 07/08/2017 07:04

Roles not romes!!!

LakieLady · 07/08/2017 07:10

I absolutely love kilts on men (well, most men - they look kind of wrong on men with skinny legs and flat arses )and would get DP to wear one at any opportunity. I also think they look utterly lovely on little boys.

Tartan trousers, on the other hand, make people look like twats, (yes, Theresa May, I'm looking at you).

In the wonderful world of formal weddings, this request is not even in the minor league of Bridezillas. Go along with it, it's not such a big ask and it's the polite thing to do.

doze931 · 07/08/2017 07:14

or would you put in your wee pin/number when paying by card 😂. A wee of tea and a wee bun

FatGirlWithChocolate · 07/08/2017 07:16

Tartan trousers are awful imo. And I am scottish, so ..

Dentistlakes · 07/08/2017 07:18

Like anything it's personal taste, but trews ( tartan trousers) are fine and part of traditional Scottish dress for men. They should be made to measure though and not bought off the peg and obviously some men look better in them than others.

thegirlupnorth · 07/08/2017 07:19

Decide what's more important, going to the wedding, or what your son wears.

MsHooliesCardigan · 07/08/2017 07:22

Clandestino DH is Northern Irish and I was a bit taken about by the 'wee' everything as I thought it was just a Scottish thing.
Once we took DS2's scooter with us and asked to put it in the hold.
This seemed to cause a major incident with much discussion between various members of staff during which 'the wee boy's wee scooter' was mentioned about 15 times.

Cailleach666 · 07/08/2017 07:34

dentistlakes- tartan trousers are not fine.

For decades they have been the uniform of bad scottish comedians, and are to be avoided at all costs.

tomatopuree · 07/08/2017 07:34

At our wedding the Scots wore kilts and the English men wore suits. We had two kids in kilts and it was seriously cute

My husband kept suggesting that he could wear a kilt but I said no.

Oh and as for the use of the word wee....aye we use that word without thinking about it.

peachgreen · 07/08/2017 07:35

Clandestino My fave when I moved to NI was someone serving me in a shop saying "there's your wee change". Grin Love it.

OP, you're just being grumpy. Stick him in a kilt for goodness' sake. He's half-Scottish! I'm surprised your DH doesn't have one - I'm half-Scottish and all the Scottish side of my family have one (as does my half-Scottish, half-Irish husband).

tomatopuree · 07/08/2017 07:38

@CherryChasingDotMuncher omg he's smashing. How cute is he in his wee kilt. I'm utterly in love

Dentistlakes · 07/08/2017 07:39

That's your opinion Cailleach. You have yours and I have mine. Granted not all men can carry them off though.
