To do my make up in Pret?

user1457213512 · 04/08/2017 07:55

I'm in Pret for my morning coffee. Didn't make the time to do my make up before I got the bus. Would I bu to do it here, discretely, in Pret? I was about to do so but then realised I've seen this classed as unreasonable on mm not before, and now I'm scared! Well not really, but if it's a massive faux paux I won't do it.

So as not to drip feed... All the benches outside in the high street are wet.

PutThatPomBearBack · 05/08/2017 16:03

At least the daily fail got 'faux pas' right Grin

reuset · 05/08/2017 16:25

However, others said she should go ahead - adding that they regularly do their make-up in public, and that anyone who has a problem with it is misogynistic
Who on earth came up with that Grin And, more to the point, how!

reuset · 05/08/2017 16:28

Some of the spelling is a bit ropey there. Hastily put together article I think.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 05/08/2017 16:32

Article?
You are too kind to call it that, reuset.

reuset · 05/08/2017 16:49

True Grin

IMHO, all matters of personal toilette should be done at home and in private. If you need to reapply your lipstick during the day, do it in the ladies. My worst is seeing people combing their hair in a restaurant; you can practically see the loose hairs/scurf flying off and into someone's lunch. Yuck.

Many will not agree with my opinion, but standards of general behaviour/etiquette are in decline and I like to stand on the right side of the thin red line! Generally, if it might offend.....don't do it.

The full works? No, but I can't see much wrong with just 'touching up'. Sorry! Can't find any other words to say it!

Bobbi73 · 05/08/2017 19:24

I honestly couldn't care less if you did your make up in a cafe. It's not like it's noisy or smelly. Go for it

adorkableme · 05/08/2017 19:27

Depends on what you're doing. If you're doing something light, like lip stick, mascara, and eyeliner no problem, anything that doesn't deal with brushes really. Anything more than that no.

I actually hate doing make-up in public bathrooms. I find most public bathrooms disgusting. I barely want to use the loo in there much less do make-up.

I don't see the issue of doing make-up on public transport, especially when there is very few people around and these days who is actually paying attention. Most people have headphones on, reading something, staring out the window, sleeping etc.. Heck, my train was at 6:40 in the morning and if I was running late, I'd finish my make-up on the train. Granted, there was rarely ever more than three people in the whole quiet section I was in, but it rarely took more than 10 minutes for me to do and it had better lighting than my room at home.

angelfacecuti75 · 05/08/2017 21:36

I sometimes do mine on the bus. I don't mind what people think of me as long as they don't tell me! I'm not hurting anyone & worse things have happened at sea. If anyone told me off would get a sharp look and told to mind their own.

angelfacecuti75 · 05/08/2017 21:38

Ps I don't do my hair in a resturant though that's just unhygenic!

TheAntiBoop · 05/08/2017 21:41

I was on the bus yesterday and a girl was brushing her long blonde hair - gave the brush to her mum who pulled all the hair out of it and dropped it on the floor. Repeated twice. Who did she think was going to pick it up? So disrespectful

angelfacecuti75 · 05/08/2017 21:42

Oh God and they think this is news?

user1457213512 · 05/08/2017 21:54

Oh gaaaaawd, Daily Mail? I feel ashamed Sad

Not too bothered about make-up in public... cafes, trains, buses etc but I really really object to people spraying perfume and deodorant in said places!!! I'm asthmatic. Found myself gasping & reaching for my inhaler on the train the other week because some ignoramus sprayed half a can of lynx two seats behind me! 😠

reuset · 05/08/2017 22:56

A few Daily Failers, when I checked earlier, seemed to be in favour of doing make up in cafés. A couple thought it was preferable to breastfeeding in cafes. Why am I not surprised!

MoronsandNeurons · 06/08/2017 12:48

Things that are not acceptable: putting shoes or bags on tables.
Using heavy fragrances like nail varnish or perfume that could affect others.
I don't see how there is anything wrong with putting your make up on at a table. It's not unhygienic and it's not anyone else's business unless it affects them. It's probably the equivalent of putting your elbows on the table etiquette wise but you're not in a fancy restaurant are you? It's a coffee shop for goodness sake! And better that than taking up the often single loos in coffee shops doing makeup when someone actually needs the toilet.
Go ahead, yanbu.

thepumpk1neater · 06/08/2017 13:03

Of course it's unhygienic, and as a cafe bar owner I'd have a discreet word as other customers definitely would not like it. But...I've never seen it, nor has anybody else, including the staff, at work. I don't think it is usual, even Daily Mail used a picture of make up being applied on a train, rather than Pret or other cafe type establishment.

gamerwidow · 06/08/2017 13:17

I wouldn't like it at the table because
It's messy and unhygienic not because I'm offended by the sight of someone applying make up.
I wouldn't want you wet wiping your pits or brushing your hair or similar at the table either. Food areas are not the place for personal grooming.

Honeychild54 · 17/10/2017 21:35

I wouldn't even think it was a problem. I do mine on the train. If you use the loo someone might need a pee and that would be worse. Places like that have only one loo. In other places there are proper multi cubicle bathrooms with big mirrors. I would use those.

Ethylred · 17/10/2017 22:43

I'm entitled to drink my coffee/eat my greasy treat in Pret without you applying your make-up in front of me. Just as you are entitled to mess around with make-up in Boots without me guzzling a sausage roll in front of you.
