To do my make up in Pret?

user1457213512 · 04/08/2017 07:55

I'm in Pret for my morning coffee. Didn't make the time to do my make up before I got the bus. Would I bu to do it here, discretely, in Pret? I was about to do so but then realised I've seen this classed as unreasonable on mm not before, and now I'm scared! Well not really, but if it's a massive faux paux I won't do it.

So as not to drip feed... All the benches outside in the high street are wet.

Faux paux is not the usual spelling but I hope you won't mind my saying that it has made me very happy. I will
probably never forget it.
Have a lovely breakfast!

inkzooka · 04/08/2017 09:01

I don't care where people do their makeup. I don't see how it's tacky.

Wait, sorry, how could I BEAR to see a woman in her natural state and then AFTER her makeup is on?! How uncouth!

HoneywithLemon · 04/08/2017 09:01

How is it "tacky"? You might think, that woman is a bit disorganised leaving the house without makeup, but "tacky"??

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 04/08/2017 09:02

But that's my point, Serf, it all starts somewhere and we keep accepting unreasonable behaviour in public.

Putting make up is of course one of the mildest forms of it.

RoganJosh · 04/08/2017 09:02

I think she means it's a bit "common". Grin

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/08/2017 09:02

Tacky, rude? Is this a throw back to 'well behaved, perfect ladies' who must pretend they didn't roll out of bed looking anything less than perfectly done up?

Just do it,OP as long as you aren't wafting powder around in everyone's food.

EdmundCleverClogs · 04/08/2017 09:03

MN is a weird place.

It's just so middle class at times, it's painful/hilarious. 'Doing your make-up, in Pret? Whatever next, dry-shampooing hair in Waitrose? Having a manicure in FatFace? Women have no self respect these days, painting your face should be done in private, so not to ruin the magic...'

Do your makeup wherever you please op. It's not anywhere near washing or being unhygienic to do so in public.

Viserion · 04/08/2017 09:03

It's applying make up, not doing a naked table top dance for goodness sake! Calling it rude and tacky is.... rude and tacky.

namechange20050 · 04/08/2017 09:04

Wouldn't bother me. I quite like seeing people put make up on though! Don't think it's tacky at all.

Neutrogena · 04/08/2017 09:05

Do it! Forget what others think of you (probably nothing because they are too busy worrying what other people think of them).

GameOldBirdz · 04/08/2017 09:05

Chardonnays But we do already accept unreasonable behaviour in public.

It's everywhere but as it's mainly men who perpetrate it then it's not seen as unreasonable.

But as soon as a woman does something in public that would probably be better done at home, suddenly unreasonable behaviour needs policing so we stop this slippery slope down to.... what?

Fuck that, if you care so deeply about unreasonable behaviour in public challenge men every time they spit, every time they cat call, every time they manspread.

And how the fuck is putting on make up unreasonable behaviour anyway Confused?

MrsPorth · 04/08/2017 09:06

I'd avoided applying perfume and nail varnish in an area where people are eating (also, they can bother people with asthma) but who on earth cares about makeup. Objecting to it often seems kind of misogynistic to me. There's a "not ladylike" undercurrent to it.

MusicForTheJiltedGeneration · 04/08/2017 09:06

Not sure how you have time to sit in Costa with a coffee but don't have time to put make up on before leaving the house Confused

Is it to do with bus timings? If not then it makes more sense to do your face at home and grab a takeaway Costa to drink in the office.

I'd be a bit judgy if someone was doing a full face of make up in a café if I'm honest. A quick bit of blusher, lippy and mascara would be okay but not the whole works.

MusicForTheJiltedGeneration · 04/08/2017 09:06

Pret not Costa Blush

EverythingEverywhere1234 · 04/08/2017 09:06

Old-fashioned (and I'm only 23) but I think it's tacky, unless done in the toilets, in which case, I do my make up in the toilets at work and don't see an issue. It's when it's in public that I think it's a bit... ugh. Probably unreasonable of me tbh!

ireallydontlikefootball · 04/08/2017 09:06

Don't do it at the table, do it in the toilet.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 04/08/2017 09:07

Table no, bathroom yes.

I would hate to be eating or drinking with someone's powder floating about/smelling their foundation.

Janika · 04/08/2017 09:07

Unhygienic. I'm not middle class. Yawn yawn.

specialsubject · 04/08/2017 09:07

As long as none of it smells, go ahead. I'd be watching in fascination.

GameOldBirdz · 04/08/2017 09:10

Edmund Painful is most definitely the right word to use.

I image scores of Boden-clad yummy mummies sitting bolt upright in cafes, knees together, looking dead ahead being careful not to move too much for fear of disturbing too many dust particles or taking up too much space with their bodies lest they be perceived as rude and entitled.

GameOldBirdz · 04/08/2017 09:13

Janika Unhygienic? How the fuck is it unhygienic? PP on here are advising the OP to do her make-up in a public toilet. Now that's unhygienic. Sitting at a table, touching your own face with your own hands to apply your own make-up products is not remotely unhygienic.

Agree with PP, there is a misogynistic undertone to making sure you act 'lady like' in public. Fuck that, do what you like, use public space however you want or need to.

MusicForTheJiltedGeneration · 04/08/2017 09:13

I can't do my make-up properly with one of those piddling little compact mirrors anyway. I need a large mirror (and two hands) to deal with the devastated landscape of my face Grin Definitely couldn't do it at a table so I have a certain admiration for those who can.

Lottapianos · 04/08/2017 09:14

'I'd be a bit judgy if someone was doing a full face of make up in a café if I'm honest'

Shock Don't you know that being 'judgy' is a hanging offence round here!

I love seeing people do their make up in public too. I would be having a good (discreet) nosey at your products and technique too! No sprays, nothing that smells, no dusting powder over everyone else, other than that its all good

SaltLiquorice · 04/08/2017 09:14

Go to the toilet and do your make up. Anything else is common as muck.

MaidOfStars · 04/08/2017 09:15

Smelling foundation? She's in fucking Pret - there are enough smells around. And she's not asking you to smell her fanny.

FFS.

OP, I am fascinated by makeup application, so would probably start at you Grin

For those saying it's 'tacky', why? What qualities are you ascribing to the woman applying makeup in public? I can buy 'disorganised' but not 'tacky'? Are we alluding to 'unladylike'?
