To do my make up in Pret?

user1457213512 · 04/08/2017 07:55

I'm in Pret for my morning coffee. Didn't make the time to do my make up before I got the bus. Would I bu to do it here, discretely, in Pret? I was about to do so but then realised I've seen this classed as unreasonable on mm not before, and now I'm scared! Well not really, but if it's a massive faux paux I won't do it.

So as not to drip feed... All the benches outside in the high street are wet.

This thread is ridiculous - you can put make up on wherever the hell you like - again I'm just jealous that you can waft around fresh faced!!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/08/2017 10:57

It wouldn't disgust me but I would think it were a bit unnecessary tbh and wonder why you weren't applying it in the toilets I can barely bring myself to have a wee in most coffee shop toilets let alone put my bag down and start applying make up!Grin

Nikephorus · 04/08/2017 10:57

But one person's application of make-up might involve a 2-second swipe of lipstick which is fine, while someone else's (who doesn't give a shit about anyone but herself) involves a 5-minute dousing in hairspray and perfume, chucking god knows what around and then leaving the remains for the staff to clear up. There's always going to be someone who comes along & takes the piss at the expense of decent civilised human beings while ruining it for the rest who do know where to draw the line. If you have time for coffee you have to time to do your full make-up routine at home.

NoLoveofMine · 04/08/2017 10:57

Indeed Laurie. Make up is something which should be done purely for the pleasure of the wearer, yet it's labelled "vain" to be seen to be doing it - suggesting it's actually to make sure a woman's face is deemed acceptable to be viewed in public and must be done immaculately before going out.

No woman or girl has to put on make up, all faces are perfectly fine without it. Only put it on if you love it.

userofthiswebsite · 04/08/2017 10:58

Not done it myself but wouldn't bother me if someone was. I might slyly watch out of interest to see if they do anything differently to I do or use any interesting products.
If I've already got to a cafe or whatnot and not already 'made up' then it's kind of too late for me. I really don't like being out of the house without make up - the only exception is if I'm going from my bed direct to the gym in the morning. I look really terrible without it though (partly as a result of being pale as hell) so couldn't bear to wait until I was already out and about.
I have gone into work without straightening my hair though when it was too hot. Felt a tad self-conscious as I looked like a scarecrow...

LuLuuuuuuu · 04/08/2017 11:00

Put it on where you want . Life is too short to fret .

Young lady next to me on the bus on Wednesday was putting some on . Bothered me not (was just amazed she got it on properly with the bus speeding along ).

WhataHexIgotinto · 04/08/2017 11:00

Blimey some people are taking this very seriously! Grin

While I wouldn't do it, which is fine, it's also fine for those that would. I very much doubt it's a huge problem for most of us and I don't imagine many of us will be rushing off to our local café to see if someone is contouring.

Cornettoninja · 04/08/2017 11:03

lauriemarlow bravo to completely ignoring the fact I specifically said male or female?

I get irritated by men who constantly preen their hair, beards and taches or are forever fiddling with their clothes. Less often a guy who is just far too pleased with his own muscles...

Neither sex is immune to vanity and I'm well within my rights to find it off putting.

But yes okay, fuck anyone who dares to leave their house anything less than perfect Hmm that's exactly what my point was.

ConstanceCraving · 04/08/2017 11:03

Better than doing it in the car whilst you're driving I guess which is something I see very often. Brainless women.

MusicForTheJiltedGeneration · 04/08/2017 11:10

Those who have an issue with it, have no real reason

This is certainly true in my case. I have no real reason for not liking it but to be honest I've only ever seen one person do full make-up in a café.

Touching/freshening up make-up is not something that bothers me, but the whole works - foundation, powder, eyelash curlers etc. was a bit much. Can't understand why anyone would want to lug all that around all day anyway.

Like Constance mentioned, I also gurn like crazy when I'm doing mascara so I wouldn't want to do that in public Grin

LaurieMarlow · 04/08/2017 11:19

lauriemarlow bravo to completely ignoring the fact I specifically said male or female?

Whose looks get commented on more in society, men or women's? Who gets pulled up more on vanity, men or women?

It's not your view in particular, it's just the embedded misogyny apparent in almost every aspect in life.

And what on earth is wrong with being pleased with how you look?

CabernetSauvignyoni · 04/08/2017 11:21

Anything that causes a nuisance or could trigger an allergy (sprays, strong smells, hair/body parts flying everywhere) is an absolute no go in public.

But make up? I can hardly see how dabbing on some foundation and a bit of powder is going to disrupt someone else's morning coffee unless you overload your brushes and apply it so flamboyantly that their cappuccino on the next table is dusted with bronzer instead of chocolate.

Pigface1 · 04/08/2017 11:36

Funny how this topic seems to trigger people's terribly delicate sensibilities. I'm sure that the people on here describing it as 'tacky' are slender Audrey Hepburn-inspired style icons, with immaculate hair, subtle make-up and discreet jewellery, who never dress in synthetic fabrics or wear fake nails or wear leggings or trainers or have visible roots or wear heels that they can't quite walk in or forget to get their clothes dry cleaned or get drunk or wear any perfume that isn't Chanel or do anything that anyone else might consider tacky.

Do it OP. It just doesn't matter.

HoneywithLemon · 04/08/2017 11:40

NoLoveofMine I wasn't suggesting makeup is compulsory, no.

TheMaddHugger · 04/08/2017 11:44

What's a 'PRET' ??

FindoGask · 04/08/2017 11:49

oh come on. You know.

ConstanceCraving · 04/08/2017 12:00

Pret = posh sandwich shop Wink

Nousernameforme · 04/08/2017 12:02

SizeSeven Yup looks like the op lit the touch paper and stood back.

Hello you lazy cunting journos Waves

I don't think that a coffee table is an appropriate place to apply a full face of makeup. I've been trying to think why it would offend me and I think its down to not doing personal grooming in public places especially somewhere people eat and drink.

It just feels grim, I am trying to think of the male equivalent eg shaving or trimming nose and ear hair but all of those are more disgusting than putting on make up anyway. Maybe hair, if people of either sex were to do their hair in a cafe then I would be repulsed.

Thinking about it I would have no problem with people putting on a full face in a train carriage, bus stop or in a park.

SizeSevenShoes · 04/08/2017 12:03

What's a 'PRET' ??

Grin Grin Grin

Most MN thing I've ever read. Far too prim and middle class and busy making wholesome home-made food to have even heard of a high street sandwich shop.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 04/08/2017 12:12

I remember shopping with a friend about ten years ago and she said "let's go to the nearest Pret" - hadn't got a CLUE what she was on about and that was in LondonGrin

KoalaDownUnder · 04/08/2017 12:12

MaddHugger is in Aus. We don't have Pret.

FindoGask · 04/08/2017 12:13

well, even if you don't, the OP says in the first line that she's there for her morning coffee. Doesn't take Poirot (he's a Belgian detective btw) to work out what sort of place it could be.

LaurieMarlow · 04/08/2017 12:14

i'm not in the UK any more. I really miss Pret. Sad

Their cheese/ham/tomato croissants were the best hangover cure I've ever come across.

KoalaDownUnder · 04/08/2017 12:16

Plenty of places sell coffee, Findo. Really no need whatsoever to be an arse about it.

HotelEuphoria · 04/08/2017 12:17

I actually don't want to see someone do their make up when I'm having a coffee, same as I wouldn't want to see a bloke get his electric razor out.

No problem you doing it in the toilets, you know with a large mirror and a work top and hand washing facilities!
