To do my make up in Pret?

user1457213512 · 04/08/2017 07:55

I'm in Pret for my morning coffee. Didn't make the time to do my make up before I got the bus. Would I bu to do it here, discretely, in Pret? I was about to do so but then realised I've seen this classed as unreasonable on mm not before, and now I'm scared! Well not really, but if it's a massive faux paux I won't do it.

So as not to drip feed... All the benches outside in the high street are wet.

Wtf why are you scared to do your make up in a coffee shop????? people do far worse

LittleGwyneth · 04/08/2017 14:30

OMG what is wrong with people? Bloody do it.

twoheaped · 04/08/2017 14:39

No. Just not the done thing. Pretty bloody grim especially if there is a lot of powder involved.

Footle · 04/08/2017 14:47

Nail polish and remover are unforgivable on trains.

missmoz · 04/08/2017 14:47

What's the problem though if you're not elbowing someone or dropping powder everywhere. Don't get how "it's not the done thing" when plenty of people do it...

I do my makeup on the train/bus most mornings, uses time I would otherwise be staring out the window. Moisturiser/lipstick/mascara/blusher

I don't pluck, shave, file, etc. Doesn't really effect anyone else...

missmoz · 04/08/2017 14:55

Bit much calling it rude. No one is putting on their lipstick with the aim of offending you.

PutThatPomBearBack · 04/08/2017 14:56

I feel like those getting worked up over this are kinds of people who iron their underwear and schedule sex once a fortnight at 8.45pm on a Tuesday.

PutThatPomBearBack Grin

This thread has made me almost militant about making sure I put on my make-up in public now just to see the pearl clutching.

ncbacktoblack · 04/08/2017 15:00

I apply foundation/concealer at home and often apply my eye pencil/mascara on the bus (usually around half a dozen people on it so not busy). Is this as issue for people? My DM once said it was tacky but I think she's weird anyway Grin

If this is a faux pas I really do wonder what else I do day to day that bugs people Confused

JordanMichals · 04/08/2017 15:07

Aside from all the questions about rudeness, dirtiness, manners, misogyny and sex fortnightly on Tuesday at 8.45pm, can we get the most important point in the OP....

but if it's a massive faux paux I won't do it

faux paux

Jordan I can't help but read it as 'fox pox' instead of faux pas...

JordanMichals · 04/08/2017 15:25

PutThatPomBearBack I'm reading it as "faux po", po pronounced like the Tellitubby name Grin

LilaoftheGreenwood · 04/08/2017 15:29

I'm now picturing this explosive psychotic ninja makeup routine with powder flying everywhere and brushes juddering sharp-end first into every available surface and a snowstorm of tissues and wipes. Am I doing makeup wrong? Shock

WeAllHaveWings · 04/08/2017 15:34

It is tacky doing makeup in any public place, but in a place people eat is minging. It's on the same level as wearing pjs to do your weekly shop.

Wish people would stop being lazy arses, get out of bed 5 mins earlier and sort out their personal grooming at home.

I have never ironed my underwear and I'm usually busy on a Tuesday night, but I do have basic standards. They are pretty low, but there.

JordanMichals · 04/08/2017 15:36

PJs to do your weekly shop... another faux paux that riles MN

EdmundCleverClogs · 04/08/2017 16:02

JordanMichals, have you seen the new Vauxhall advert? Makes me laugh and think of all the stuffy humourless people on MN, who's standards the rest of us plebs must adhere to (or suffer being called tacky, rude or vile....).

Nothing wrong with putting on makeup in Pret. It's not unhygienic and it's not bothering anyone so why not?

thepumpk1neater · 04/08/2017 16:12

It's not unhygienic and it's not bothering anyone so why not?

I disagree on both counts. And it's bothered quite a few people on here already.

Edmund, yes granted there are wildly differing hygiene levels.

I haven't seen anybody do this, I must ask DH if he ever has. I think, as owner, I'd have a quiet word as I don't think the other customers would like it.

user1498085877 · 04/08/2017 16:26

I disagree on both counts

Fair enough - politely wondering why? Not being rude or anything just curious.

Fifilafrog · 04/08/2017 16:28

It wouldn't bother me as long as it was done discreetly and with out products flying everywhere. I guess the point is that applying make up falls under "personal grooming" and therefore implies that it is something that is generally done without an audience. Not unhygienic, just unnecessary in my opinion. Most people get dressed and ready to leave the house at home, not in public. Just get up earlier?

CurlyMango · 04/08/2017 16:58

No don't do it. Get up five mins earlier and leave it at home. Why would you even think this is ok.

justanotheryoungmother · 04/08/2017 17:06

I don't understand why people have a problem with this?Confused

I don't think YABU OP Smile

ArialAnna · 04/08/2017 17:11

Amazed by all the people suggesting to do it in the loo. Places like pret, Costa, etc often only have one toilet. Now I realise all those times I've been waiting for ages were due to someone doing their make-up!! Frankly I'd rather they did it at the table. Doesn't bother me.

WeAllHaveWings · 04/08/2017 17:13

I don't understand why people have a problem with this?

if you read the answers on the thread you will see many reasons.......

wtffgs · 04/08/2017 17:19

When you consider the rude and tacky things men get away in public (spitting, cat calling, man spreading, swearing, walking around topless when it hits 12C), I think applying a bit of make up in a cafe pales in comparison.
