We're going to have to call a halt to Brexit aren't we?

Lukewarm Remain voter here. Understand that the Government has to listen to 'the will of the people' and all that.

But for the love of God, now that it's clear what absolute economic suicide we're committing surely we've got to put a halt to it whilst the govt and the opposition work out what the fuck's going on!

..and we are talking about a state that has no trade negotiators, starting from scratch against the behemoth that is the US, with its army of seasoned professionals...

mathanxiety · 10/08/2017 01:05

And as far as seamlessly hopping from the EU to the WTO goes, think again.

The EU an a distinct entity is a member of the WTO.

www.ictsd.org/opinion/nothing-simple-about-uk-regaining-wto-status-post-brexit I urge you to read this, Mummy.

How will British farmers react to WTO subsidy limits?

mathanxiety · 10/08/2017 01:05

'AS a distinct entity...'

"That point was passed when we voted.
voted once to leave.
voted to have TM as PM.
They were taken to court, and still it goes on.
The EU said we are out.
The PM said we are out.
The baby is on the way..."

Nothing like taking back control, eh?
And actually, nobody voted for TM as PM. The rest is baloney too.

From the Businessworld link upthread:
www.businessworld.ie/european-news/EU-s-top-negotiator-warns-of-possible-delays-to-Brexit-talks-568967.html
EU officials said progress was difficult not because Britain had unacceptable demands, but because it had no position at all on many issues.

"Barnier expressed concerns that sufficient progress in October looked difficult now. Mainly because Britain has no position on finances, but also because they don't have positions on other issues as well," a second EU official said.

The election result was an expression of serious doubt about the course the government had set the UK on. Recently we have seen the spectacle of different government ministers contradicting each other as to UK aims in the negotiations.

It is all to play for, therefore. All negotiating points are up for grabs. Will the loudest, most forceful, and most persistent lobby win? Or given the presence of determined individuals like Arron Banks lurking in the wings, will the special interest with the deepest pockets win? Or will the government be forced to listen to common sense?

The situation is not at all clearcut. It behooves concerned citizens to press the government as much as they can.

LellyMcKelly · 10/08/2017 02:15

My mum literally voted Leave because of that stupid fucking £350m on the side of a fucking bus. She genuinely thought the NHS would get an extra £350m a week. What a grade A fucking mess.

Peregrina · 10/08/2017 09:11

The government will decide that it's not in the country's interest and decide to either stop it unilaterally (unlikely),

Or realise that it will destroy the Tory party, so call a halt.

mummmy2017 · 10/08/2017 18:54

Do you know what is the funniest thing about all this.
No matter what I say you will attack me.
Which makes me laugh even more.
So I can be as wrong as i like in your view,
BUT we voted out, We are leaving,
This will happen, and the fudge you all crave won't be happening.
I don't care which terms we use, which I have only ever made a guess at as I really don't know.
But come 2019, you will see it happen.

LineysRun · 10/08/2017 19:18

I doubt it very much, mummmy.

TheNumberfaker · 10/08/2017 20:04

You won't be laughing in 2019 because either Brexit will have been stopped or if it hasn't you will be painfully aware of why we were all so desperate to stop it.

I don't care which terms we use, which I have only ever made a guess at as I really don't know.

Now that's the thought process of a responsible voter.

CardinalSin · 10/08/2017 20:50

And, finally, confirmation that Mummy doesn't believe a word of it, and is simply a wind up merchant. As if we needed it.

londonista · 10/08/2017 20:51

Vulva ... exactly

londonista · 10/08/2017 20:55

The total idiocy of this situation will eventually dawn on people.

Wherever we are in 2019 i am entirely sure it won't be what either side are happy with. So what has been the point other than to horrifically divide our society.

My lovely salt-of-the-earth neighbour whom I adore voted Brexit "for the sake of my kids". I could have cried. At one time we used to swap cuttings and cups of tea over the fence. Now we barely speak.

mummmy2017 · 10/08/2017 21:13

Why is it so hard to see.
Wishful thinking on your part isn't going to stop this.
Both Labor and Tory have said there will not be another election as this was what the Majority of the Voting public agreed too.
They have to respect this vote, and because the Tory's were voted back in Labor didn't win, by the way, the Tory's did, and yes they had to get help, but Labor were willing to do a deal with anyone to get into power so don't mud sling on that one.
Single Market demands free movement of people, this won't happen.
I don't know what will happen as I am not privy to the meetings.
I just know this is happening.

CrowyMcCrowFace · 10/08/2017 21:19

What was it there 'won't be another one of', Mummmy2017 ?

Am I missing something, or are you a tad confused as to the difference between a referendum & an election?

It's been a long day, so am quite willing to be told I've misinterpreted your post.

CrowyMcCrowFace · 10/08/2017 21:32

Ah, OK, you meant to say 'referendum'. Only they aren't quite the same thing, old bean...

TheElementsSong · 10/08/2017 21:38

"Wishful thinking" LOL

mummmy2017 · 10/08/2017 21:39

I do wonder about the Election as well, as Labour know this topic is unpopular and they can't win either way, also Corbyn mania and the way what he said about Fees was misunderstood, has made people think twice.

mummmy2017 · 10/08/2017 21:41

Wishful thinking is the formation of beliefs and making decisions according to what might be pleasing to imagine instead of by appealing to evidence, rationality, or reality. It is a product of resolving conflicts between belief and desire.

CardinalSin · 10/08/2017 21:47

But Brexit was never about rationality! It's always been about appealing to desires with no basis in reality!

You're becoming a great comedy turn Mummy. Grin

mummmy2017 · 10/08/2017 21:55

Which reality are you living in ? in mine we triggered Article 50.

CardinalSin · 10/08/2017 22:02

..which is reversible...

You do seem to have trouble with basic comprehension although of course you're actually just trying to wind people up by playing dumb

CrowyMcCrowFace · 10/08/2017 22:02

Perhaps the reality in which 'triggering Article 50' was an awfully silly thing.

I'd like to think that those cheerleading it had a clearer view of the processes & consequences, tbh.
