Disclaimer - I am a Northerner, but I cannot fucking stand these people. Jason Manford, peter kay, shelley lindsay, paddy mcguinness, 'ooh I'm so northern I go the chippy for me breakfast', ooh only northerners get me cos I'm so northern',

Fuck off.

Only because I have just heard jason manford on the radio making up his northern stories that never happened and it really annoyed me Angry

It's situational comedy Confused. I'm not a fan of 'normal' people playing up to stereotypes but these are comedians.

All situational stand up comedians do it. Is it just the northern ones that irritate you because you are northern?

backwardpossom · 01/08/2017 14:53

Thank you wildbhoysmama - as a Doric spikker in deepest darkest Grampian, I found that post somewhat offensive. Where I live, people don't ham up the Doric, we speak it.

gillybeanz · 01/08/2017 14:55

I'm from NW and it doesn't bother me.
I like that they at least remember their northern roots.

heron98 · 01/08/2017 14:57

My mate is from Crewe and always goes on about being Northern. I really can't agree it's in the North, it's so far south! We are in West Yorks and I think that's only really just north.

FooFighter99 · 01/08/2017 15:02

@Argeles I met Andy Burnham the other week, he came to our office to meet with the CEO and he's fucking gorgeous!! He has such lovely eyes and he is a proper lovely guy Smile as you can tell, I'm still gushing about it weeks later...

I love being a northerner I'm a pie eater and proud

MikeUniformMike · 01/08/2017 15:31

I love Johnny Vegas's accent.

Regarding sitcoms, I used to hate Bread.

EBearhug · 01/08/2017 15:45

We don't have gravy in Southern chippies or curry sauce or mushy peas

You do in Hampshire and Dorset. Well, certainly curry sauce and mushy peas. Nit sure about gravy, because nothing''s as good as homemade gravy.

East Anglia seems to be the only place which does spicy spuds in its chippies, which is to the detriment of chip shops everywhere else.

I once heard an episode of the Food Programme on R4, where they were discussing how doner kebab mixes round the country had different preferred spice mixes. Not sure if anyone has done a map of kebab flavourings compared with accents.

I don't mind people having regional accents (and it'd be hypocritical of me if I did - you should be reading this post in a Dorset accent.) It'd be terribly dull if we all spoke RP. That doesn't mean I find particular comedians funny.

oldlaundbooth · 01/08/2017 15:50

Robbie Williams. Total northerner but lives in... California.

Allthewaves · 01/08/2017 15:50

There's nothing worse than an over egged north eastern accent

oldlaundbooth · 01/08/2017 15:52

Best description of Manchester was 'it looks like the back of a fridge'

Made by a footballers wife, dontcha know. (who is Polish, I think. The wife, not the footballer)

MikeUniformMike · 01/08/2017 16:05

Robbie Williams isn't a Northerner. He's from Stoke. Stoke is in the Midlands.

TheNaze73 · 01/08/2017 16:11

YANBU.

Interesting to see where people think is the north. I'd consider Robbie Williams as northern. Milton Keynes & up is north I think

bigtapdancingpimp · 01/08/2017 16:18

My mum's cousin is a professional Yorkshireman from Huddersfield and the most annoying man I've ever met. Think Harry Enfield's George Whitebread character 'I say what I like and i like what I bloody well say'. I always want to tell him to shove his lard butties up his arse 😂

I am a northerner BTW (Liverpool) but try really hard not to steal cars. Very difficult when you live in a hot country and people leave their cars outside shops with the engine running. I'm talking huge BMWs and Mercs... the temptation is awful 😂😂😂

AnotherLegoBrick · 01/08/2017 16:21

Please don't make us responsible for Robbie Williams. I find Peter Kay etc quite dull - the "look at me I'm a think northerner' jokes stopped being funny about 15 years ago.

EBearhug · 01/08/2017 16:25

Robbie Williams. Total northerner but lives in... California.

He'd be getting a lot more stick if he started speaking with a Californian accent.

IHopeYourCakeIsShit · 01/08/2017 16:28

RE spicy chips, I used to live in Hull and there was a takeaway there that did fabulous spicy chips. Damned if I can remeber what they were called, but I've got a proper craving for them now.

AnotherLegoBrick · 01/08/2017 16:29
  • thick not think...
leccybill · 01/08/2017 16:30

On holiday at the mo. Bought some pies for lunch before we left, didn't finish them so I chucked them in my rucksack for the journey... got to security at the airport, bag came up on the scanner, asked if there were any liquids, replied no.... security man then picks out my Galloways paper bag containing 4 party pies.
So we had our pies confiscated. And if that doesn't make me a professional northerner, then I don't know what does Grin

EBearhug · 01/08/2017 16:36

RE spicy chips, I used to live in Hull and there was a takeaway there that did fabulous spicy chips.

No, not spicy chips, spicy potatoes - more like spicy roast potatoes than spicy chips.

EBearhug · 01/08/2017 16:36

Though spicy chips sound good, too.

OVienna · 01/08/2017 16:41

I can't wait to show this to DH. I burst out laughing at your post.

NC4now · 01/08/2017 16:49

nothing's as good as homemade gravy

Except chippy gravy.

IHopeYourCakeIsShit · 01/08/2017 16:50

Ah spicy spuds sounds good too.

StorminaBcup · 01/08/2017 16:53

You get 'professional' Irish / Welsh / Londoners too. It's just trying to carve out an identity that people can place / relate too. Micky Flanagan has built his whole career on being an east Londoner.

The ones that really make me laugh are those who say they're from Manchester and live in Glossop or use their work SW1 postcode to boost the personal status.

oldlaundbooth · 01/08/2017 17:43

I'd say Robbie is a Northerner.
