Disclaimer - I am a Northerner, but I cannot fucking stand these people. Jason Manford, peter kay, shelley lindsay, paddy mcguinness, 'ooh I'm so northern I go the chippy for me breakfast', ooh only northerners get me cos I'm so northern',

Fuck off.

Only because I have just heard jason manford on the radio making up his northern stories that never happened and it really annoyed me Angry

I had an ex like this. He had a fairly broad Blackburn accent anyway but if we ever went to a pub or somewhere like that (we lived down south) he'd exaggerate the accent to a ridiculous level and talk really loudly for attention. God it was embarrassing

DonaldStott · 30/07/2017 10:58

it's just popped up on the Bolton news website that Peter Kay has donated £75,000 to a local charity set up in aid of a local boy who has cancer so I don't think he's rude or stingey.

I think some people have really misunderstood this thread. It wasn't about how fucking wonderful these people are in real life fgsHmm

Well wether you agree or notJean all the electoral wards in salford are wards in the northwest of England according to Wikipedia Hmm

Kleptronic · 30/07/2017 10:59

I'm in two minds about this because y'know, how very dare you and all that. On the other hand I am from Liverpool and I have never met anyone who speaks like John Bishop.

CockacidalManiac · 30/07/2017 11:01

I've heard the same programme. He was talking some shite about water on his cornflakes.

viques · 30/07/2017 11:01

My deceased stepfather, Horrible Harold, may he burn in eternity, was a professional Yorkshire bigot.

"I'm from Yorkshire,I tell it how it is" = I am allowed to be as rude and offensive as I want to black people, brown people, Irish people, women, other drivers, other drivers who were women etc etc

He was as tight as a gnats arse, he discovered an off-licence that sold cheap sherry that they decanted into your own bottles. He decided that the "best" bottles for this were the ones that had originally contained very expensive stuff. "We look after our pennies in Yorkshire". One Christmas his drinks order included a single two litre bottle of coke for my brother , the only person to drink it, when I said that was not going to be enough for DB and any visitors he pretended that he thought coke had to be diluted!

I am not saying all Yorkshire people are mean bigots and racist, but that's what he trotted out as his excuse for meanness and nastiness. sorry Yorkshire, it put me off you for years.

JacquesHammer · 30/07/2017 11:01

Isn't it just a comedian thing though? Micky Flanagan does exactly the same with London, Michael McIntyre with that ghastly "lovable posh guy" schtick.

To be honest I cannot think of a single comedian I actually find funny Grin

RandomDent · 30/07/2017 11:02

Whenever Manford appears on the telly I shout "Sexter!" Blush

Btw DonaldStott, "Oop" north never works in a Northern accent. :o The first time I came across this was in a parody interview with Shaun Ryder, when the article kept saying "fook". I was baffled. :o :o

DonaldStott · 30/07/2017 11:04

Hilarious Grin. I am from where he used to live and I have never heard anybody with his accent.

Oh come on, you were seriously put off an entire place because of the behaviour of one chap who sounds like he would have been a twat wherever he came from? How odd!

SlothMama · 30/07/2017 11:04

I'm from the North West and none of this bothers me, I like hearing/seeing Northerners on the TV/Radio. I particularly love Peter Kay my Dad comes from Bolton so I agree with everything he says because my Dads family are very much like how he describes!

abigamarone · 30/07/2017 11:05

I hate when they put on a thick, broad accent. Paddy McGuiness is terrible for it. My extended family come from Bolton and none of them talk like Paddy.
How odd, I'm from Bolton, have worked in Bolton for over 30 years and know plenty of people who speak like Paddy McGuiness. There's a plethora of accents round here but Peter Kay & Paddy McGuiness sound like they come from Bolton. Sara Cox sounds to have lost some of her accent.

HoneyIshrunktheBiscuit · 30/07/2017 11:05

I think you'll find southerners consider Manchester and Salford as the deep north. And it is considered the north west in terms of region.

I once met someone from Watford who thought stoke on Trent was in the north.

x2boys · 30/07/2017 11:06

You realise Yorkshire is a large place viques?

SlothMama · 30/07/2017 11:07

Paddy and Peter Kay have Boltonian accents, they don't put them on at all!

x2boys · 30/07/2017 11:08

Indeed abigmarone I live near Farnworth lots of people sound like Peter Kay around here!

GetAHaircutCarl · 30/07/2017 11:09

I haven't lived in the north for over thirty years.

And yet it's in my DNA. A working class northern upbringing really is a culture all of its own. The longer I'm away, the more clearly I see it. And appreciate it. And find it funny.

Of course comedians will mine that.

Crinkle77 · 30/07/2017 11:11

Can't stick John Bishop. His accent is so forced. Cilla was also one of the worst professional northerners. Her accent was totally put on. She's not lived in Liverpool for years.

Alicia555 · 30/07/2017 11:11

I can't stand Jason Manford, he's so opinionated on politics and general current affairs I think he's done a good job of alienating a lot of his fan base.

Mrsglitterfairy · 30/07/2017 11:11

It's not about needing to calm down but yes maybe I am being defensive. I don't actually feel the need for you to be so wound up about it. And as you haven't said where in the north west you're from, I'm guessing it's somewhere more 'desirable' than the likes of Hulme where Jason is from or Bolton where paddy & Peter are from and you worry that as you're northern people may think you're like them. And I do agree with insancerre this isn't a very nice thread beacause as I say there are plenty of people who are actually like the people that you dislike

Crinkle77 · 30/07/2017 11:11

Or should I say she'd.

DonaldStott · 30/07/2017 11:12

Not so much Peter Kay maybe, but come on, please don't seriously tell me that paddy mcguiness doesn't spread his accent on with a big thick knife.

Argeles · 30/07/2017 11:14

I'm a born and bred Londoner, and I always find I exaggerate my accent when I'm anywhere else in the UK. I don't do it on purpose, but it just seems to happen naturally.

I don't keep talking about London though when I'm elsewhere.

I must say that apart from Jason Manford, I love the other Northerners you've mentioned op.

I also adore, admire and fancy the fucking pants off of Andy Burnham. He always used to refer to the North when he was 'down sarrff,' and I used to find it cute, like he was very protective of his roots. I don't know if he exaggerates his accent, but I know I love it regardless!

SapphireStrange · 30/07/2017 11:14

Yes, it annoys me too.

Slarti · 30/07/2017 11:15

It's part of their act, isn't it, so I suppose if you don't like them or find them funny it will probably get on your nerves. I'm from the North West of Magrathea and I find them all pretty funny, including their over-exaggerated northernness. Micky Flanagan is the southern equivelent and he's pretty funny too. I draw the line at John Bishop though.
