I've just had my hair done, hair extensions at the hairdressers, altogether £410 and I didn't tip.
Should I of ?
I'm moving in the next few weeks and as its a council house I need to buy all new carpets as its basically a empty shell so i need every penny I can get really.
Do you tip?
And if so how much?

Oil rigs?

Ashkey234 · 21/07/2017 21:23

Yeah oil rigs

That pays really well then op , stop feeling guilty about the carpets and let your dp pay.

Coastalcommand · 21/07/2017 21:28

I always tip my hairdresser £3 for a wash/blow £5 for cut and blow or £10 for cut, colour and blow. It's just over 10%.

AccrualIntentions · 21/07/2017 22:12

Here I was thinking jobs on the oil rigs paid well but presumably not if you can't afford to live anywhere and it's essential you're in heavily discounted social housing...

Ashkey234 · 21/07/2017 22:18

We are quite happy the way we are..we would be foolish to give up a secure tenancy for private renting with no certainty.

Also my partner earns a lot more than me.
I work a min wage job so I wouldn't expect him to pay for everything.

AccrualIntentions · 21/07/2017 22:21

Yes I absolutely agree you'd be foolish to give it up! I'm just really surprised you're entitled to it, when social housing is in such shortage in most areas.

Jakeyboy1 · 21/07/2017 22:23

£410 WTAF? I hope they last 6 months.

When we moved house I made the decision to stop getting my hair coloured as I could no longer afford the upkeep with a bigger mortgage.

I tip sometimes. But at £410 I certainly wouldn't.

LockedOutOfMN · 21/07/2017 22:26

I always tip my hairdresser either 25 or 30€ for a service that costs around 100€ (varies slightly on exactly what I'm having done). All of the staff at my hairdresser are so lovely; they fit me in any time at short notice and keep that salon open late, and I'm always delighted by my hair when I go. I think that the 100€ price is also very reasonable for the high quality service and attention they give me so they more than deserve the tip, in my opinion.

Ashkey234 · 21/07/2017 22:28

They last a year ..you go every 3 months for an apt where they move them up which is £30

BeepBeepMOVE · 21/07/2017 22:37

Extensions will not help your hair at all. Even the best ones will make you lose hair and can even damage the condition due to the upkeep.

When I had super fancy hairdresser I never tipped but did let him use me occasionally as a model for seminar things and he did whatever he wanted to my hair- sometimes taking 3 hours for a hair cut.

Now I use the local place I give the girl £2-£5 if I had a nice time and like my hair. It's just a small token really. She does my fringe for free every few weeks too.

WitchesGlove · 21/07/2017 22:44

It's reasonable to tip the girl that shampoos your hair/ sweeps up- they really won't be getting paid much.

But only £2 or so.

Otherwise, no.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 21/07/2017 22:49

They'll be ridiculously lucky to last 6 months, Jakey.
£410. They're pricing themselves out of business.

Clawdy · 21/07/2017 23:00

Anyone that can afford hundreds of pounds for their hair can afford a tip. Whatever the circumstances.

emancipationofalex · 21/07/2017 23:11

Hold on... so my taxes are subsiding your housing but you spend £410 on hair extensions when I'm struggling to pay my bills, haven't had a haircut in months, and pay a private landlord?!

What a joke.

And to get hair extensions, I presume they're glue or bonded as clip-in will cost you £100 and nothing more, they need to be taken out or refreshed every 3-6 months so you're spending that kind of money quite often.

No your taxes aren't subsiding my housing ...
They are mini locks which last a year and the refresher apt is every 3 months which costs £30

Ashkey234 · 21/07/2017 23:17

The shop I go to has been open 8 years now and is fully booked months in advance so obviously they have a market for them

OP posts:
emancipationofalex · 21/07/2017 23:19

Who do you think subsidises your rent then?

This thread is about tipping at the hairdressers,I'm done justifying my life to a bunch of strangers.
Not my problem if your struggling to pay your private rent ..don't go on bashing those who qualify for LA properties..

Be careful OP I've had medical conditions which led to thinning hair , had a few extensions put in which o then had to have removed as after a couple of weeks they were pulling my hair out. Since then I've been using redken extreme anti snap shampoo, Moroccan hair oil and tons of heat protector as well as a weekly hair mask, iron supplements and vitamins oh and no colour and it's finally got longer and thicker.

As for the tipping I leave 10% tip but my hair cuts are £25 so my 10% is loads less than yours.
