to want MIL to wash hands?

Hiya all, I'm back on MN after quite a long absense. For you who don't remember me I have a DS who is now 15 montsh old (wow, where did all that time go?).

I was in te room next to the bathroom recently when MIL used the toilet and she never washed her hands and now I've become paranoid about it.

We are hardly ever there, becuase they smoke in the house, but sometimes (rarely though as I must admit to not trusting v many ppl with ds) mil comes here to sit ds and now I don't want her to touch him at all. Surely the bacteria will spread to my ds and can be dangerous?

She also wiped DS face with a tissue she spat on to get it wet before I had a chance to get a flannel.
And she let DS steal a spoon from a coffee shop because it kept him quiet and when I confronted her about this she said "They have so many spoons" (doh)

I think because of her lack of basic hygiene and morals she shouldn't spend too much time with DS but DH thinks I'm overreacting.

Am I being unreasonable? What would you do about this?

I think her hygiene habits are pretty disgusting and I would stop the spitting on a tissue and wiping dc's face uurrggghh! But I wouldn't stop spending time with her because of it, imo over reaction but generally - yuk!!

Yes you are being unreasonable.

My sister mollycoddled her three children. To the point where she carried a small pot of milton around with her, in case one of them dropped their dodie.

They have had everything. DS went to the laissez-faire school of hygiene and is the most robust of all the grandchildren.

mytwopenceworth · 25/03/2007 16:54

stop being rude cod. rude fish get filleted, so watch it!!

archiesmum, a bit of spit never killed anyone but i agree it's all a bit disgusting, not washing your hands and all that. tell her! if you know for a fact she hasnt washed her hands after the loo, say so. tell her its gross.

you probably are overreacting to want to keep her away totally because she's a grubby bugger - are there other issues?

crispyduck · 25/03/2007 16:55

I would spit on a f**ing tissue and wipe her face..ewwww blah...

I have been to the loo and not washed my hands - not often but I am guilty and I'm an Infection Control Nurse but I have never done the spitting on a tissue thing yet!

I don't like germs at all but there is a difference between dirt and filth IYKWIM.

Washing hands after visiting bathroom yes very important causes tummy bugs and all sorts. I dont take my babies into a house which has smoke in but alot of people do.

Spitting in tissue no way ho say I wouldnt even do that myself. She wont change however much you say she will just think you are fussing too much. I wouldnt encourage stealing either although my mother took my dd who's 3 into M&S she hadn't realised until leaving just having gone past security that my dd had grabed a huge teddy, she just carried on her journey home.

At the end of the day he's your ds and people should abide by your rules. Everybody has different views regarding upbringing of children, as you are two different families so to speek you have different values. She needs to realise you wont tollerate this and accept it to keep a happy medium.

I'v never spat on my dd's face but I have spat on my dd2's bum when she had a unexpeted poo in her nappy and I'd run out of wipes (spit & tissue).

Not something I would want to do again though

violetsmum · 25/03/2007 17:03

Don't like the smoking, and think it's a bit wierd that our mil doesn't wash her hands...but also think that a bit of exposure to bugs is good - not necessarily toilet ones though.

Certainly no problem with using spit on a handkerchief, what's the difference between that and a sloppy kiss on the cheek.

Being over hygienic leads to allergies, better a bit of spit than bleach and chemicals galore...at least it's natural...
