to want MIL to wash hands?

Hiya all, I'm back on MN after quite a long absense. For you who don't remember me I have a DS who is now 15 montsh old (wow, where did all that time go?).

I was in te room next to the bathroom recently when MIL used the toilet and she never washed her hands and now I've become paranoid about it.

We are hardly ever there, becuase they smoke in the house, but sometimes (rarely though as I must admit to not trusting v many ppl with ds) mil comes here to sit ds and now I don't want her to touch him at all. Surely the bacteria will spread to my ds and can be dangerous?

She also wiped DS face with a tissue she spat on to get it wet before I had a chance to get a flannel.
And she let DS steal a spoon from a coffee shop because it kept him quiet and when I confronted her about this she said "They have so many spoons" (doh)

I think because of her lack of basic hygiene and morals she shouldn't spend too much time with DS but DH thinks I'm overreacting.

Am I being unreasonable? What would you do about this?

hunker you get covered other peoples germs all the time. Public toilets are filthy from a germ point of view, just beause you wash your hands doesn't mean everyone else does so as you push the door to go outside you have just contaminated your hands with germs from the people that didn't wash their hands!! but we can't permenantly keep our hands clean, it's all about reduction of risk!

[Boils self]

Katy44 · 25/03/2007 18:01

hunker, I'll join you (in a separate pan of course!)

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 18:01

to be mildly serious for a moment. I'm currently dealing with dd's mild case of OCD re hand washing. It really isn't much fun to see your dd with cracked and bleeding hands, and stressed out.

I'd honestly rather go with the arse bacteria. far less of a risk.

McCadburysDreamyegg · 25/03/2007 18:03

for katy and hunker also comes in yellow

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 18:03

It's always people who don't wash their hands after they've been to the loo who go on about how many germs there are on the handle of the door to the loos.

I know! It's because of dirty feckers like them!

AND they're often the same people who won't sit on the seat in case of getting I don't know what - leg germs or somesuch NONSENSE (MB's going to tell me that leg germs are a Very Serious Threat now [argh)

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 18:04

MB, DS1 has the potential to be similar re OCD - I am VERY laid-back about mess and washing hands round him. I use MN to vent

Spidermama · 25/03/2007 18:04

I certainlay don't always wash my hands after going to the loo. Especially not my loo with my germs. Urine is sterile. Some health freaks actually drink the stuff .

I don't, before anyone starts.

Old lady spit is absolutely fine. I can't understand some of the attitudes on here. You clean freaks must have palpatations if you ever have to use public loos.

Learn to love germs. They're good for you, in moderation of course.

SquareSausage · 25/03/2007 18:07

Do you think that women with the pissy tescos bag wiped her hands afterwards.

HillarysDancingInTheFairyField · 25/03/2007 18:08

If I have to use public toilets I always open the door with my elbow, choose the loo with the open door & hover above the pan. I use tissue to flush the chain and tissue to open door, I wash my hands and use clean tissue to turn off tap and open door to leave.

Ok a bit ott but these places are filthy.

Dont jump on me I just dont want other peoples excrements on me, I'd be sick on the spot

Spidermama · 25/03/2007 18:10

I hope you clean off the piss you've sprayed whilst hovering above the seat.

I used to hover but life's too short and my thigh muscles lack the strength these days.

HillarysDancingInTheFairyField · 25/03/2007 18:11

of course, terribly awkward having a shit

If you're stuck in the jungle with an injury and no access to clean water you're meant to wee on it (sterile). I think you're meant to wee on it after jellyfish stings or something as well.

I think you need to lighten up and bit AM, she's your ds' granny. A bit of her lick won't hurt ("don't lick me mummy" as ds2 says when I say, uh you've got a dirty face).

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 18:38

Oh yes, pee is very good for jelly fish stings. It neutralises them and reduces the pain no end/ Would also work for wasp stings, but rather than cause a rumpus I tend to use a stick of ammonia!

Yes Hunker Leg Bacteria are utterly lethal. Have you never heard of the Leg Germ Plague???? Legs were rotting here, there and everywhere. People didn't have a leg to stand on.

More bacteria in your mouth btw than is your arse

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 18:39

So the old lady lick could be fatal then?

powder28 · 25/03/2007 18:39

Has anyone mentioned 'penisy hands' yet?

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 18:40

Oh, I was going to - I forgot, with the revelation of the leg plague.

Twiglett · 25/03/2007 18:41

are you saying hunker talks through her arse?

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 18:42

[grr]

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 18:42

a lick is fine, as the skin acts as a barrier.

A bite is far more serious....as in a bite that breaks the skin and causes bleeding.

Licking open wounds would also be a bad thing. But TBH if granny is licking open wounds, infection is the least of your worries

colditz · 25/03/2007 18:43

only read OP

Total overreaction about germs - I wouldn' tlet him spend too much time in the house with the smokers though

3easterbunniesandnomore · 25/03/2007 18:45

trilly, you would need a whole bogrole, or something like that , to truely stop any germs touching your hands whilest wiping, cos, as soon as the paper gets a bit soggy, wiht peedrips, or whatever, the germs sort of travel through....
must say, I would never dare to ask anyone if they had waashed their hands , even though I find it totally gross if people don't wash them....shudder...however, the Op is seriously overreacting, and like Lulu said, I think their are other issues.
What is the issue about teh spoon, btw...must admit, I try to avoid sharing spoons with anyone and prefer if others are the same...but for dental hygiene reasons, more then because of it being possibly gross (that would depend on who it is)...or is it the caffeein part?

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 18:46

at Granny licking open wounds.

"Am I being unreasonable? ...MIL's a vampire and uses her grandchildren as snacks"

archiesmummy · 25/03/2007 18:47

Yes I watched something on telly ages ago, wheer they said to stop all bacteria you need 80 layers of toiletroll !!!
