to want MIL to wash hands?

Hiya all, I'm back on MN after quite a long absense. For you who don't remember me I have a DS who is now 15 montsh old (wow, where did all that time go?).

I was in te room next to the bathroom recently when MIL used the toilet and she never washed her hands and now I've become paranoid about it.

We are hardly ever there, becuase they smoke in the house, but sometimes (rarely though as I must admit to not trusting v many ppl with ds) mil comes here to sit ds and now I don't want her to touch him at all. Surely the bacteria will spread to my ds and can be dangerous?

She also wiped DS face with a tissue she spat on to get it wet before I had a chance to get a flannel.
And she let DS steal a spoon from a coffee shop because it kept him quiet and when I confronted her about this she said "They have so many spoons" (doh)

I think because of her lack of basic hygiene and morals she shouldn't spend too much time with DS but DH thinks I'm overreacting.

Am I being unreasonable? What would you do about this?

Oh and if it wasn't for the bateria in your shitm you'd be cronically constipated. !/3 to 1/2 of your turns are made up of dead bacteria, mostly E coli

HillarysDancingInTheFairyField · 25/03/2007 17:23

yes my dd1 also became very ill after getting a nasty bug from someone not washing their hands she had to be admitted to hospital as she wasnt keeping down fluids. I dont care what remarks i get amymore
i always ask.

SquareSausage · 25/03/2007 17:24

This is a nice teatime conversation MB!
i think I'll go check on the beef casserole!

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 17:25

The Curse of The Biology Teacher

We have a lasagne on the go!

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 17:25

Then why the fuss re staff in catering establishments washing their hands?

SherlockLGJ · 25/03/2007 17:27

My dinner is not brown MB, you carry on...

trillium · 25/03/2007 17:28

Do all those on here who are a bit anal (see what I did there?)about the washing of hands after you've been to the loo not use toilet paper? Personally my hands never touch my nether regions, that's what the paper is for.

Every child has to have their face wiped with a spitted hanky - it's a rite of passage surely?

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 17:29

I'm not saying we shouldn't wasjh hands, I'm saying one shouldn't go OOT about it.

This is all about relative risk.

If someone is making food for large numbers of people, and has poor hygine, the relative risk is far worse. In part because the bacteria will get directly into the food.

Touching the skin, which forms an impermiable barrier to bacteria is far less risky. The surface of the skin is the first layer of the immune system.

Katy44 · 25/03/2007 17:29

Do one-offs happen? Surely hand washing is a habit - I sometimes think I don't need to wash my hands (if for example I'm going to empty the bin - I'll wash them thoroughly after that) but find that I've done it anyway without thinking.

archiesmummy · 25/03/2007 17:29

Yes there is a huge difference between dirt and poo (or even wee).
Of course DS is walking and putting things in his mouth. The other day he even managed to suck on a cigarette butt before I managed to take it from him, and before anyone says anything, yes i did feel like a bad mum....

Well done Hillary for asking people if they have washed their hands, I wish I was brave enough for that.

Thanx hunker for support, felt a bit lonely there for a while

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 17:30

No, I use leaves and a shitty stick.

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 17:30

AM, how is your sister?

mousiemousie · 25/03/2007 17:35

Think of all the "how clean is your house" programmes.

They find numerous colonies of potentially dangerous bacteria in the frankly shocking kitchens and bathrooms but the owners of the houses have lived like this for donkeys years without getting ill from them.

The actual danger to your ds is probably considerably lower than at a playgroup with shared toys.

Relax!

archiesmummy · 25/03/2007 17:35

Thanx hunker, not sure yet what's happening with my sister, but she was gonna have a hot bath and relax this evening.

I'm going to leave them to it for now.

Katy, yes I'm the same. I often think I won't clean my hands because I'm going to clean the toilet, but then I always end up doing it anyway and then I do it again after.

OP posts:
archiesmummy · 25/03/2007 17:40

mousiemousie, this is probably true. I still can't ignore the fact that someone has dirty hands.

at least I now know, that maybe I'm a bit strict with my MIL

MB - Is there any truth in the fact that it's more hygenic to lick the toilet bowl than to bite your fingernails?

My toiletbowl is immaculate of course but I'm not about to eat my beef casserole off it

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 17:47

depends how well you clean your hands after you scratch your arse !!!

The handle of the toilet is generaly far more infected with bacteria than the toilet seat!

SquareSausage · 25/03/2007 17:48

thought so!

Tortington · 25/03/2007 17:49

mb as your here - what is ascorbic acid? and is it evil when found in fruit juice
sorry for hijack

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 17:49

MB, that's because there are germs on your hands after you've wiped your arse, surely?

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 17:56

it depends. The bacteria will not be able to pass through the paper. they don't have little teleproters

If you get actual shit on your hands, the yes, there will be bacteria there too.

But you always have bacteria on your hands. More overe, you need them to be there to help to protect your skin!

Good hygene is a sound idea, but there is not point getting het up about it. And our immune system is well adapted to cope with the odd bit of granny spittle!

The skin is a very good barrier to infection.

Re ascorbic acid AKA vitamin C. Bloody good think it is too! and quite natural in fruit!

nogoes · 25/03/2007 17:56

You really need to chill out a bit. If you are worrying over things that aren't really that serious you will make yourself ill.

I have to admit to something, ds when tiny had a habit of taking spoons from costa coffee, I would only find them in his pram after we got home. They are still there in my kitchen drawer, we have nearly a full set. But our old spoons are all gone, where do they disappear to?

hunkermunker · 25/03/2007 17:57

I know I need bacteria to stay alive.

But I don't want someone else's arse germs on me.

That's not so odd, is it? [world gone mad]

Twiglett · 25/03/2007 17:57

yes you are being totally unreasonable getting so uptight about it

PFB syndrome

you'll do worse believe me

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 17:58

[whispers so as not to upset anyone]

Even washing doesn't kill all the bacteria, so you almost certainly have someone elses arse germs on you!

And let us not get started on willies!
