to want MIL to wash hands?

Hiya all, I'm back on MN after quite a long absense. For you who don't remember me I have a DS who is now 15 montsh old (wow, where did all that time go?).

I was in te room next to the bathroom recently when MIL used the toilet and she never washed her hands and now I've become paranoid about it.

We are hardly ever there, becuase they smoke in the house, but sometimes (rarely though as I must admit to not trusting v many ppl with ds) mil comes here to sit ds and now I don't want her to touch him at all. Surely the bacteria will spread to my ds and can be dangerous?

She also wiped DS face with a tissue she spat on to get it wet before I had a chance to get a flannel.
And she let DS steal a spoon from a coffee shop because it kept him quiet and when I confronted her about this she said "They have so many spoons" (doh)

I think because of her lack of basic hygiene and morals she shouldn't spend too much time with DS but DH thinks I'm overreacting.

Am I being unreasonable? What would you do about this?

Soz, mb, you're not going to convince me that I shouldn't wash my hands after going to the loo/sneezing into them/getting them dirty...

And now I need to go feed the OH...goodnight ladies!

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 20:10

and I wouldn't try to, just no-one needs to get hyper about it if they are dealing with people who have normal immune systems.

bacteria will not pass though the intact skin of a healthy child. Which is what the OP was worried about

margoandjerry · 25/03/2007 20:11

also, how many of you "oh I always, always wash my hands after the loo" do the regulation 20 seconds of scrubbing with soap and then and equally long rinse with hot, hot water then drying thoroughly with paper towels and how many of you do a quick swish with cold water?

I always think the quick swish with cold water is worse than nothing - just providing germs some useful dampness to breed in. It's not as if the germs are like tiny insects that can be rinsed off.

I would chill about the whole subject - think about that ad (for milton or something) claiming that there are more bacteria on your chopping board than on your loo seat. Bet you don't make your MIL wash her hands after she's cut a slice of bread...

As for the spitwash, what else is spit for?

3easterbunniesandnomore · 25/03/2007 20:12

Lovecat....of course you should wash your hands after loogoing, etc...I am the same, like I said before...but teh extreme 5 minute wash is just not necessary when you deal with people with a normal immunesystem....a suppressed immunesystem is a whole different cup of tea...believe me I know, worked as a Nurse in Oncology for a few years, etc...

PanicPants · 25/03/2007 20:13

Could be worse, my dad plays with the dog/throws his drool covered ball for him, and THEN makes ds his tea [shudder]

McCadburysDreamyegg · 25/03/2007 20:14

Now that is grim!!!

Bucketsofdynomite · 25/03/2007 20:15

Yes you are being unreasonable, I think you have a severe case of Firstbabyitis. I think that if you were to have another baby this year you would not give a toss. I don't mean go get pg now , I mean if you had 2 kids under 2 you wouldn't be dwelling on other people's toilet habits.

3easterbunniesandnomore · 25/03/2007 20:16

Xenia, I think the pre chewing can aid digestion...i.e. because Babys don't chew and obviously the enzymes in our spit that food get mixed with is ther to help us digest our food properly, hence the importance of chewing properly.

However, if you share a spoon with your Baby or whatever you will introduce your oral germs into their mouths, and introduce your caries ( I think that was the one) to them, which isn't so great for their teeth!

3easterbunniesandnomore · 25/03/2007 20:18

lol on the dog thing...it always gets me how people can be so freaked out about a dog licking a cheek, but are usually fine wiht them licking their Kids hands...surely the other way round would be slightly more hygenic.

McCadburysDreamyegg · 25/03/2007 20:19

3easter you are right - did something on this during my infection control degree! Adult saliva is not good for babies mouth, cleaning babies dummies in your own mouth when dropped is a not recommended.

fizzbuzz · 25/03/2007 20:31

When you wash your hands in public loos, there is always a hand dryer, and NEVER paper towels.

Paper towels are meant to be the most hygenic, and I have heard that hand dryer creates more bacteria than anything else. Perhaps MB can enlighten me!

However nothing can ever be as disgusting as roller towels which you never see now. Always damp and grubby and festering all over

McCadburysDreamyegg · 25/03/2007 20:34

If you wash your hands properly (20 secs - it's longer than you think) then air dryers shouldn't be a problem. The problem is that lots of people don't wash their hands properly and so there lies the problem. The other issue with driers is that many people don't dry their hands completely as it takes so long, I too prefer paper towels!

3easterbunniesandnomore · 25/03/2007 20:38

well, papaertowels are better still, though, as this enable you to turn of the tap (if you have to...not all turn off automatically) wihtout touching the dirty tabs with your freshly cleaned hands!

Blandmum · 25/03/2007 20:41

20 sec is the time it takes to sing a verse of Yankie Doodle Dandy {useless factoid]

Another one is that you should do cardiac compressions to the rythym of Nellie the Eliphant

McCadburysDreamyegg · 25/03/2007 20:42

or Happy Birthday!!!

Bucketsofdynomite · 25/03/2007 20:49

Don't forget the taps, lightswitch, door lock and handle...
