To think it will serve some smokers right if outdoor smoking is banned

Yesterday a friend and I were sitting outside a cafe in a park (no indoor seating) having a coffee. We were the only people there as it was late in the afternoon. A couple sat at the table right beside us and proceeded to light up and enjoy a couple of cigarettes with their coffee.

I was sitting at the bus shelter a couple of evenings ago and a guy sat down beside me and proceeded to light a cigarette. I got up and walked a few feet away and stood until the bus came. He just smoked away, oblivious.

There was a long queue at the ATM today as several in the area weren't working. A woman smoked away in front of me and around loads of other people as we all waited for our turn.

Surely, just because smoking isn't illegal out of doors, it doesn't mean smokers don't have to show any consideration of cop on towards others.

AIBU to think that some smokers (and I know it's only some) will have only themselves to blame if smoking out of doors is eventually made illegal?

Yes YABU. It is lawful to smoke outside- they weren't deliberately blowing it in your face were they?
And I say that as a non-smoker.
That said, the current smoking ban has improved people's health because lots of people have given up smoking, so maybe an outdoor ban would help even more people to give up.

Shoxfordian · 13/07/2017 12:45

Yes yabu

thefutureisfemale · 13/07/2017 12:45

YANBU
It's disgusting and anyone who disagrees is defending smokers rights to harm the people around them.

malmi · 13/07/2017 12:53

It's lawful to fart outdoors but we consider it rude to deliberately do so in close proximity to others.

What we are seeing as fewer people are smoking, is that those that don't become more aware of just how rude it is to subject others to unwanted smells that drift about, without any good reason. That's not taking into account any health implications. It is polluting the public space in a similar way to people playing music on their phones or going around shining torches in people's faces (if people did that).

Waggamamma · 13/07/2017 12:55

YANBU - an outright ban would be unworkable but public places, particuarly those attracting families and children should be smoke-free - play parks, schools gates, bus stops, zoos etc.

The less children see people smoke around them, the less likely the will be to start.

Smokers really should be considerate of those around them and not smoke where it might be cause a problem to others. Their smoke is harmful, even outdoors.

ThymeLord · 13/07/2017 12:57

You are ridiculously unreasonable and smoking isn't going to be banned. Do people really want to live in a world where things they don't agree with are banned?

Gotanewusernamenow · 13/07/2017 13:00

When I smoked and there were people around I would move away and blow the smoke somewhere else. But then one could argue that the smoke is still in the air.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/07/2017 13:01

It won't be banned. It's attitudes like yours that make me grateful that I'm part Dutch. The UK can and never will be a progressive society with people seeking to 'burn the witch' the witch being whatever behaviour they deem anti-social. Why does it have to be two extremes - I see this a lot in the UK, there can never be any middle ground about anything. It's either you are for or against. How odd and unproductive.

DioneTheDiabolist · 13/07/2017 13:01

YABU OP. Why would smoking outside be banned and who would do it? Confused

Gottagetmoving · 13/07/2017 13:01

Oh god, again?!
I see people smoking outside and can't say I have noticed it being a problem. Anyone I know who smokes goes out of their way to keep well away from people. You will always get a few who don't care at all about others' reactions.
The government won't ban smoking because they make a shed load of money from the tax so it is something you just have to put up with because it is legal

Caenea · 13/07/2017 13:02

As a smoker, OP, I do think you are being a touch on the hysterical side. Smoking outdoors is literally the only place we can smoke now, beyond our own homes, especially as it now can't be done in a car if said car contains an under-18.

I enjoy smoking. I know that not everyone does. I try very hard to not be a dick about my smoking and have moved when someone has asked (as they got there first and I the sat down and lit up.) Did you ask any of these people if they'd mind moving away?

MsHopey · 13/07/2017 13:02

I had to put some money in the bank the other day and there was a massive queue outside the bank. The man in front of me lit up while we was waiting, here I am, 36 weeks pregnant and coughing and sputtering. I couldn't leave the queue and the man was totally oblivious. I turned my back to the queue but it didn't help, in the end I had to discreetly hug my husband so i could use his coat as a mask to try and stop the smoke getting to me. There's no way it's going to change, but I do think people could be a bit more considerate.

gamerchick · 13/07/2017 13:03

Aw I was in a properly vile mood as well. Cheers OP

GahBuggerit · 13/07/2017 13:04

YABU, people didnt want smokers indoors so this is the result.

There will never be a full ban on smoking outside.

As a side I am massively Hmm when I see 'Yummies' having lunch at 11.30am with a large glass of wine or 3, talk about desperate for booze or what. Alcohol should be banned. Wink

gamerchick · 13/07/2017 13:06

Reet we have our impregnants, now we just need our asthmatic and we're off Grin

VladmirsPoutine · 13/07/2017 13:06

MsHopey I bet everyone else in the queue were more bemused by your 'performance disgust' than the guy smoking.
Coughing and spluttering? Turning your back and then holding on to your husband? Hmm - I bet you made such a show of yourself. You talk as if he was holding you down and exhaling smoke into your mouth.

Ummmmgogo · 13/07/2017 13:06

yabu! would you say that some fat people will only have themselves to blame when junk food is banned?!

malmi · 13/07/2017 13:06

The middle ground would be that you are allowed to release cancerous gases inside your own property, as long as you're not subjecting children to them.

Other than that, there is no reason why anyone else should have to inhale them.

From a legal point of view, you couldn't ban it on the basis of it being annoying or rude, any more than you could ban farting in public.

But from a health point of view there is a good case.

lasiguanas · 13/07/2017 13:07

I'd be surprised if outdoor smoking is ever banned. I can't stand smokers who smoke in close proximity to others, but I just have to think about their horrible teeth, emphysema and painful death from lung cancer to know they'll regret it in time.

mummyrabbitpeppapig · 13/07/2017 13:11

Hmm I can see both sides of this argument - it's horrible when you come out of a restaurant or something and you have to walk through a cloud of smoke. ( Well it is for me anyway ). Surely there's a way around this to suit most people ( you can't please everybody all of the time )

ProudBadMum · 13/07/2017 13:11

You can tell the sun is shining when these threads start.

It's only a couple of month then us smokers will be outside in cold and rain without anyone giving a shit then.

GreenTulips · 13/07/2017 13:13

Other than that, there is no reason why anyone else should have to inhale them

Car fumes? bus fumes? BbQs? What about the smell of greecy food? What about the great unwashed?

Lots of unhygienic smells about - get over yourself - I take it you are down the old more now it's smoke free?

YetAnotherSpartacus · 13/07/2017 13:19

I'd like to see smoking banned in all public or communal areas including bus shelters, where there is outside seating, park benches, etc.

bluetongue · 13/07/2017 13:20

For some people breathing in cigarette smoke does make them cough and splutter. It isn't being overdramtic or precious it's a genuine physical response.
