To think it will serve some smokers right if outdoor smoking is banned

Yesterday a friend and I were sitting outside a cafe in a park (no indoor seating) having a coffee. We were the only people there as it was late in the afternoon. A couple sat at the table right beside us and proceeded to light up and enjoy a couple of cigarettes with their coffee.

I was sitting at the bus shelter a couple of evenings ago and a guy sat down beside me and proceeded to light a cigarette. I got up and walked a few feet away and stood until the bus came. He just smoked away, oblivious.

There was a long queue at the ATM today as several in the area weren't working. A woman smoked away in front of me and around loads of other people as we all waited for our turn.

Surely, just because smoking isn't illegal out of doors, it doesn't mean smokers don't have to show any consideration of cop on towards others.

AIBU to think that some smokers (and I know it's only some) will have only themselves to blame if smoking out of doors is eventually made illegal?

It should be banned outside, it's disgusting. I want to be able to sit outside in the summer without having my air polluted.

MrsBakedBean · 13/07/2017 13:32

I believe it is illegal in some bus stops. I think it's if they are covered? Roof and sides?

GahBuggerit · 13/07/2017 13:33

Better stay away from the roads then Ropsley.

GreenTulips · 13/07/2017 13:33

And you want to sit inside in the winter -

Boo hoo!!

Some people need to get a grip -

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 13/07/2017 13:33

I'd like it to go the same was as California,no smoking in public places.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 13/07/2017 13:34

The thing is though. If they can't smoke out doors. Where can they smoke.
If they want a smoking ban. They should stop selling them altogether,
As its bang out of line. To say sell them and say to people but. You can't smoke them.
Ahh but we know why they won't stop selling them, don't we taxes.!!!!!

Onhold · 13/07/2017 13:34

I'd like moaning about smoking outside threads banned from MN.

smashyourglasses · 13/07/2017 13:35

Oh god how rediculous. Some of the responses too, way ott.

GahBuggerit · 13/07/2017 13:37

Id like a ban on Angel perfume

Fucking horrendous antisocial stuff far worse healthwise than a half a couple of seconds waft of smoke.

It triggers my migraines, so yes, a ban on Angel please.

Mrsknackered · 13/07/2017 13:37

YABU. I wouldn't like it in front of me at an ATM it's not the end of the world is it - after all you're outside.
Smokers are human you know, not weird inferior cretins.
I think at the bus shelter you could have legally been right to ask him to move from under it but the other occassions YABVU.

Onhold · 13/07/2017 13:38

Yes a wearing perfume on the bus ban please. Makes me sneeze all the way to work.

BMW6 · 13/07/2017 13:38

I would like to know if any of the posters saying smoking outside should be banned are drivers? If they are, they are hypocrites.

HeteronormativeHaybales · 13/07/2017 13:39

It never ceases to amaze me that some smokers think that a) somehow being outside neutralises the offensiveness of cigarette smoke and/or b) it's actually fine to blow evil-smelling, irritant and carcinogenic smoke all over someone if it happens to be outside. I used to smoke, a very long time ago, and it would never have occurred to me to light up in a queue or somewhere where (non-smoking) others were in close proximity (and I never did it when children were anywhere around anyway).

I would be all for non-smoking beer gardens, parks, cafe outdoor areas etc.

ConstanceCraving · 13/07/2017 13:41

Today 13:34 Onhold

I'd like moaning about smoking outside threads banned from MN

Or a section just for the smoking, MIL, SIL and dog moaners.

That would be good. Let them all fester together Grin

turbohamster · 13/07/2017 13:41

Lots of public parks and outdoor spaces have banned smoking in British Columbia, seemed to be well observed

ThymeLord · 13/07/2017 13:43

Why is it OK to inflict evil-smelling, irritant carcinogenic exhaust fumes on people?

Ineedmorelemonpledge · 13/07/2017 13:44

I had to put some money in the bank the other day and there was a massive queue outside the bank. The man in front of me lit up while we was waiting, here I am, 36 weeks pregnant and coughing and sputtering. I couldn't leave the queue and the man was totally oblivious. I turned my back to the queue but it didn't help, in the end I had to discreetly hug my husband so i could use his coat as a mask to try and stop the smoke getting to me. There's no way it's going to change, but I do think people could be a bit more considerate.

You couldn't leave the queue your husband was also standing in for a little bit?

🤔

MrsJAMMFraser · 13/07/2017 13:44

YANBU. When I was pregnant cigarette smoke triggered my morning sickness. I was in a bus queue with 2 women smoking. When they saw I was obviously upset by the smoke they deliberately blew it towards me.

They didn't find it so funny when I was violently sick next to them. It was amazing how revolted they were by my vomiting in public, apparently THAT is antisocial but blowing smoke into a pregnant woman's face is fine.

stressedbeyond123 · 13/07/2017 13:46

YABVU - smokers have been kicked out of their favourite place to smoke i.e. a pub, as non-smokers didn't like it, which is fair enough.

Smokers now go about their daily business of having a ciggie outside, in the open, which is where you non-smokers wanted them.

deal with it - smokers had to!

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2017 13:47

Why is it OK to inflict evil-smelling, irritant carcinogenic exhaust fumes on people

Because until there is a cost effective viable option many people make the best of what they have. Because cars are essential until there is a perfect public transport structure.

As much as I agree that something needs to be done about pollution from vehicles, that and smoking aren't really comparible.

TheCuriousOwl · 13/07/2017 13:47

I like the cut of PoorYorick's jib.

Sleepthief84 · 13/07/2017 13:48

I don't see why it can't be banned. It's illegal to smoke in public areas in much of the USA. It's not just an unpleasant smell it's harmful. I'll never forget going for my scans at the hospital and also leaving hospital with newborn DD and having to walk through a crowd of smokers right outside the entrance of the maternity unit. Foul. Before I was pregnant I'd didn't bother me too much after giving up myself but when I was pregnant the stench made me feel sick to my stomach, so much so that I put a blanket ban on smoking while at my home (outside, no ones ever smoked in the house). FIL wasn't happy that he couldn't go for a smoke while he was here but I couldn't bear the smell of him when he came back in. Came in handy when DD was born and I didn't want people reeking of smoke holding her with her face snuggled up to their clothes!

Ropsleybunny · 13/07/2017 13:51

I'd love to be able to sit outside and drink a coffee or a glass of wine and eat a meal. Unfortunately the disgusting, inconsiderate smokers have moved outside.

VladmirsPoutine · 13/07/2017 13:51

MrsJAMMFraser Blowing smoke at a pregnant woman is abhorrent as is blowing smoke deliberately in anyone's face. But that poster was making a real theatrical performance of it. I don't doubt for a second she looked ridiculous.

AreWeThereYet000 · 13/07/2017 13:51

I'm a smoker, a considerate smoker, I don't do it in queues, close to children/non smokers etc I always stick to the smoking areas, sanitize my hands and use gum before going back to my friends who don't smoke for example...

What I cannot stand and it's happened a few times is non smokers, who come to sit in the smoking area as one of their friends smokes and then proceed to moan about the smoke!! Stick to the non smoking area then!

When would the ban stop? Would smokers be allowed to light up in their garden as that's outside? How about a on residential area such as a field?

Everyone has their vices whether it's junk food, drinking, smoking, late nights - non of these are good for your health, so do you want everything that could possibly harm you banned? Wouldn't be a fun time to be alive if that's the case
