To think it will serve some smokers right if outdoor smoking is banned

Yesterday a friend and I were sitting outside a cafe in a park (no indoor seating) having a coffee. We were the only people there as it was late in the afternoon. A couple sat at the table right beside us and proceeded to light up and enjoy a couple of cigarettes with their coffee.

I was sitting at the bus shelter a couple of evenings ago and a guy sat down beside me and proceeded to light a cigarette. I got up and walked a few feet away and stood until the bus came. He just smoked away, oblivious.

There was a long queue at the ATM today as several in the area weren't working. A woman smoked away in front of me and around loads of other people as we all waited for our turn.

Surely, just because smoking isn't illegal out of doors, it doesn't mean smokers don't have to show any consideration of cop on towards others.

AIBU to think that some smokers (and I know it's only some) will have only themselves to blame if smoking out of doors is eventually made illegal?

Do people really want to live in a world where things they don't agree with are banned?

I totally do. A world without smoking, fox hunting, 4x4s in suburban areas, cold shoulder tops, Donald Trump, malfunctioning self-service tills and reverse threads. Sounds like heaven.

brasty · 13/07/2017 13:20

Of course the Government does not want smokers to smoke for the tax. It costs more to treat smokers for illnesses than any money made.

ThymeLord · 13/07/2017 13:22

I'll agree with everything on your ban list Yorick, except the smoking.

Banning cars would be a much better move, for everyone's health and wellbeing and the sake of the planet. The occasional waft of fag smoke in the open air will do you no harm at all. Being a self-righteous, intolerant whinyarse is probably more damaging to your blood pressure in the long run, anyway.

Biscuit

There you go, OP.

ginghambox · 13/07/2017 13:24

I'd like to ban kids and dogs from all public places, but sadly it won't happen.

SummerKelly · 13/07/2017 13:25

YANBU. I'm not bothered so much about people walking around where you can get away from it but any of those examples would annoy me. I was inside a cafe the other day but smoke was coming in from those sat outside because the windows were open.

HipsterHunter · 13/07/2017 13:25

Outright ban in public areas would be super/.

gillybeanz · 13/07/2017 13:25

YABU and ridiculous.
The government make too much money from smokers, far more than the NHS pay out for smokers illnesses.
Smokers pay a lot of tax for their pleasure and keep schools and the NHS going, the same as your taxes from working.
It's not nice to blow it in people's faces, but I wonder if you object to smokers outside in the winter when you are nicely snug and warm inside.

ConstanceCraving · 13/07/2017 13:25

Surely, just because smoking isn't illegal out of doors, it doesn't mean smokers don't have to show any consideration of cop on towards others.

What is your solution then OP?

PoorYorick · 13/07/2017 13:25

That was just the shortened list. The full one is as long as my arm.

Autofillcontact · 13/07/2017 13:25

*Today 12:57 ThymeLord

You are ridiculously unreasonable and smoking isn't going to be banned. Do people really want to live in a world where things they don't agree with are banned?*

I completely agree with thyme. You can't go through life expecting things you find unpleasant to be banned Shock

Winterc00kie · 13/07/2017 13:27

I'd love to see it banned in none communal areas.

it stinks, i walk to work at 7:30am and it knocks me sick if im walking behind someone smoking.

its just rank.

BlindAssassin1 · 13/07/2017 13:27

I think on the east coast of the USA (California I think) it was banned from within a certain distance outside public buildings, uni buildings, libraries etc. I'm sure it'll be coming here too eventually.

gillybeanz · 13/07/2017 13:27

I think because of the pollution from so many cars on the road, they should be restricted to those in need only.
Go to work on a bus or train, don't make none essential journeys like we did during fuel strikes, etc.
I'd love this, but it ain't gonna happen.

malmi · 13/07/2017 13:28

Car and bus fumes - will likely be outlawed in time, given how much damage they do to public health. France have recently announced that they will ban the sale of petrol and diesel cars by 2040.

BBQs - there are no end of threads on here with people complaining about neighbour's BBQ or bonfire smoke, so this is considered rude, to some extent. However, people do love their BBQs so I'd say for the foreseeable future there will not be public support for banning them, even though the smoke may contain dangerous elements. Maybe if people strongly turn against meat-eating in the future and view it similarly to how we view cigarettes today. But I can't see it. And people will still want to cook veggies anyway.

Smell of greasy food - Yeah, I'd say you should have sufficient extraction/filtering to prevent this from intruding on other people, but I'm not sure if it would become a legal matter as the health implication is not so high. There have been threads on here about unwanted strong cooking smells invading people's houses and the consensus was that it shouldn't have to be tolerated.

Great unwashed - I assume you mean 'smelly people'? Like I say, it could be considered rude to be out and about where people can smell you without having washed (excepting BO issues that can't be helped). But probably not a legal matter.

Sorry, I wasn't sure whether you were asking whether these things should be 'considered rude' or 'made illegal' so have tried to address both questions!

AndNowItIsSeven · 13/07/2017 13:28

Smoking at semi enclosed bus shelters is illegal.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2017 13:28

Busiest pub on our Main Street has an amazing beer garden that is no smoking. It is absolutely bliss.

He's now opening chains of the same style pub over various towns because they're doing so well. All non-smoking.

ThymeLord · 13/07/2017 13:29

I would like a full outdoor ban on the consuming of dead animals in public. Areas could be set up, cordoned off with red tape and sealed in to contain wafting dead animal smells. I sometimes have to hide behind my husband and cover myself with his coat when there is someone near me eating the flesh of a dead animal.

Same for perfumes too, if you don't mind. They set my allergies off and I don't want to have to put up with streaming burning eyes and constant sneezing. Ban all perfumes asap.

Also cars. They are damaging my health and polluting the environment. Ban them.

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2017 13:30

Go to work on a bus or train, don't make none essential journeys like we did during fuel strikes, etc.
I'd love this, but it ain't gonna happen

There isn't the public trasnport infrasctructure to enable that though - it would need significant investment

Astella22 · 13/07/2017 13:30

YABU - banning someone smoking outside

PoorYorick · 13/07/2017 13:31

*You can't go through life expecting things you find unpleasant to be banned"

I CAN TRY

trixymalixy · 13/07/2017 13:31

YANBU. I'd like to see it banned in all public places.

I also hope Britain follows France's lead to phase out sales of petrol and diesel cars.

MrsBakedBean · 13/07/2017 13:31

YANBU. The reason smoking was banned in pubs etc was that smokers were unable to "police" themselves (ie go outside away from people that did not want to inhale their fumes).

Selfish smokers are the reason for the ban and the outdoor smokers who are selfish gits and don't care about anyone else prove that point.
