To think it will serve some smokers right if outdoor smoking is banned

Yesterday a friend and I were sitting outside a cafe in a park (no indoor seating) having a coffee. We were the only people there as it was late in the afternoon. A couple sat at the table right beside us and proceeded to light up and enjoy a couple of cigarettes with their coffee.

I was sitting at the bus shelter a couple of evenings ago and a guy sat down beside me and proceeded to light a cigarette. I got up and walked a few feet away and stood until the bus came. He just smoked away, oblivious.

There was a long queue at the ATM today as several in the area weren't working. A woman smoked away in front of me and around loads of other people as we all waited for our turn.

Surely, just because smoking isn't illegal out of doors, it doesn't mean smokers don't have to show any consideration of cop on towards others.

AIBU to think that some smokers (and I know it's only some) will have only themselves to blame if smoking out of doors is eventually made illegal?

Yanbu. The vast majority of smokers are selfish and don't care that most find their habit foul.

Ollivander84 · 13/07/2017 14:31

It's bad enough my local hospital has now lumped vaping in with smoking Angry
With huge signs telling me to ring the quitting smoking helpline. I have quit smoking Hmm
What's the point in telling me that when I've already quit but I can't use the quit help at the hospital because you've banned it? Confused

sewingtheseedsoflove · 13/07/2017 14:32

Sorry MsHopey, it was just your use of language that made me laugh.

I read it like one of those magazine Top Tips..

"Ladies, fed up of public smokers inducing a tickly cough? Simply discreetly hug your husband and use his coat as a mask to stop the smoke getting to you. "

(ignore me..)

No-one is saying that things don't affect people differently but your conduct MsHopey was nigh on silly.

coddiwomple · 13/07/2017 14:32

smoking outside will never be banned.
why not? Restaurants have finally started to create at least partial non-smoking areas outside, the message is finally going through.

Vaping might not be "smoking" - and the effects are debatable but that's not the point - but its just as rude to blow some nauseating sickly vapour in somebody's face. You shouldn't "vape" in a place where you cannot smoke, it's not that difficult.

Smoke in your own home, but even that is antisocial and rude if you live in a flat and the stench goes through your neighbours windows.

RortyCrankle · 13/07/2017 14:32

YABU. Sitting outside you are getting as much harmful air from car emissions etc. The moaners got their wish for an indoor ban If you don't like it, sit inside.

user1485342611 · 13/07/2017 14:32

I think bans have been considered and discussed in some areas. And a voluntary ban was trialled in Bristol a couple of years ago.

If it works, use it. Wink

I personally thought a discreet hug was better than putting a sleeve over my face or something.

ThymeLord · 13/07/2017 14:33

Why should I care that you find my habit 'foul'? Confused

Do you care what I think of your habits?

ThymeLord · 13/07/2017 14:34

The effects of vaping are absolutely not debatable. Perhaps do some very basic research and you will find out that that just isn't true, at all.

If you don't like sickly vapour then I assume you are campaigning to have all sickly perfumes banned too?

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2017 14:34

smoking outside will never be banned

And yet various places are doing just that Grin

Figaro2017 · 13/07/2017 14:36

Ban having kids. The drain on the NHS is huge.

LuxuryWoman2017 · 13/07/2017 14:37

I'm a smoker but do try to be considerate of others and I don't understand why people smoke in atm queues or near people eating. Smokers can be very inconsiderate I agree

MsHopey · 13/07/2017 14:39

Like I said, I don't really worry if people thought I looked silly.
I had few choices at that point. I shouldn't have to leave the queue that I had been waiting in because of the smoke, nor did I ask the man to leave the queue or stop smoking because I know that would have been mega unreasonable. I'm just saying that sometimes in heavily congregated areas its a bit selfish, that's just how I feel.

TeaCake5 · 13/07/2017 14:39

thyme as the vast majority of habits don't have a negative health impact on others where as smoking does.

YetAnotherSpartacus · 13/07/2017 14:40

Smokers do in in your back garden

Except that a neighbour has had to stop using her garden because a smoker has moved in next door and he sits and chain smokes in the garden. Balcony smokers are awful too.

Why should I care that you find my habit 'foul'

Because your habit directly and detrimentally affects others.

The moaners got their wish for an indoor ban If you don't like it, sit inside

Naice. Those doing nothing to harm others get pushed inside to please those with a harmful and disgusting habit.

joannegrady90 · 13/07/2017 14:41

I'm a non smoker and I have no problem with people smoking outside at all.

Yes some people are rude but most importantly have met move away when smoking near others.

Maybe it would be best to say something if people are making you feel uncomfortable with their smoking.

There are worst things in the world...

JacquesHammer · 13/07/2017 14:44

*Why should I care that you find my habit 'foul'? confused

Do you care what I think of your habits*

Well my habits. I probably eat too many Cherry Drops. I have a bit of a penchant for crisps. I buy way more books than I need. I LOVE a good horror movie and watch whenever I can. I love playing my piano and having a jolly good singalong

Which of those is going to make your clothes stink and potentially impact your health?

coddiwomple · 13/07/2017 14:45

Hmm I am yet to be confronted with a nutter spraying perfume in my face when I am walking in the street.

Perhaps do some very basic research and you will find out that that just isn't true, at all.

A study published in Environmental Science & Technology in July 2016 identified harmful emissions in the vapour, including possible carcinogens and irritants, though at a much lower level than in conventional cigarettes. The BHF would not advise non-smokers to start smoking e-cigarettes.
Sounds fantastic.

llangennith · 13/07/2017 14:45

I was so pleased when smoking inside cafes was banned but smokes have now taken over all outside seating so enjoying a coffee in the sun is impossible. I wish smoking was banned full stop. And vaping. In fact anything that smells disgusting should be banned.

OohMavis · 13/07/2017 14:48

As an asthmatic with cigarette smoke being my biggest trigger besides a food allergy, people smoking outside but in enclosed spaces (like bus shelters and small pub gardens) really, really make me miserable.

It takes a while for me to return to normal after breathing it in. Hours. It can ruin an entire afternoon. I'll spend hours coughing up fluid/plhegm with a hoarse throat and an audible wheeze, it's exhausting.

A little consideration for those not blessed with lungs hardy enough for breathing in noxious smoke would be lovely Smile

Spuddington · 13/07/2017 14:48

Only a few more months until the bad weather sets in and we don't have to read these threads.

I'm off for a fag.

Ollivander84 · 13/07/2017 14:49

Well yes, it's obviously best that non smokers don't, the same as they shouldn't start slapping nicotine patches on ConfusedHmm
But they're around 95% safer than cigarettes, and smokers should be encouraged that vaping is safer

Atenco · 13/07/2017 14:49

The middle ground would be that you are allowed to release cancerous gases inside your own property, as long as you're not subjecting children to them

I'm all for this, but what would be the point of having a car if you could only drive it around your own property?

Onhold · 13/07/2017 14:50

I'd like usernumber posters who cba to get a proper user name banned from MN.
