To ask how often you do laundry?

I've been looking online for a suggested housework schedule (daily, weekly, monthly, etc) and was surprised to see laundry listed as a weekly task in many!

There's only two of us, and what with clothes, underwear, exercise clothes, towels, bedding, etc., if I don't do laundry every day, it starts piling up.

I don't have a dryer and have limited airing space so can't do more than one load a day - do others just do several loads on a designated day?

5 of us and I probably average 2 loads a day if you include towel and bedding changes and sports stuff.

Biffsboys · 04/07/2017 23:30

Every single day - usually 2 per day . My ds20 wears work clothes , gym clothes then football clothes most days Angry Then of course I have the towels from his numerous showers

Xmasbaby11 · 04/07/2017 23:33

Family of 4. Probably do a wash 5 times a week. No routine but that's how it works out. Actually maybe 6 now as we're swimming every week so the swim towels are done immediately after.

HipsterHunter · 05/07/2017 00:45

Just me.

Bedding every weeks.
Towels every 2 weeks.
Hand towels, tea towels etc changed regularly but only washed in a big batch every 2 weeks ish.
1x light per week
1x dark per week

HipsterHunter · 05/07/2017 00:45

bedding every 2 weeks

Me and DH. Two full IKEA bags (each will fit in one of the shared machines) every seven to ten days. One is a 40 degree load, the other is a 60. Regular clothes in the 40, pants/socks/towels/bedding in the 60.

Mrsknackered · 05/07/2017 01:32

Family of 4. DP has work uniform, gym gear, stupid amount of pyjamas and normal clothes.

DS2 constantly has poo explosions and even with the most stale of rusks he somehow manages to smother himself.

DS1 and I are relatively laundry friendly.

I begrudgingly do 1-2 loads a day. If I skip a day or two the amount I am faced with is absurd.

Mrsknackered · 05/07/2017 01:35

I point blank refuse to iron though.
I couldn't care less if my clothes are creased and if DP wants something ironed he has to do it himself.

pilotswife · 05/07/2017 01:40

Every day - loathe having dirty washing in house. Have outside line and also an inside hoist so drying is easy. Family of 4 plus multiple guests so always sheets towels etc etc

CremeFresh · 05/07/2017 01:43

I did a load nearly every day when DD was at home . She's moved out recently and I'm now struggling to find enough stuff to make up a load!

avamiah · 05/07/2017 01:46

I wash everyday and always have done, what's the point of having a washing machine.

JungleInTheRumble · 05/07/2017 01:48

A couple of loads at the weekend. We should wash the towels and bedsheets more often though so if I wasn't lazy I'd say three loads a week for two people.

Pivoine · 05/07/2017 02:44

Might I ask, OP, if there are only two of you why are you doing all the laundry?

CiderwithBuda · 05/07/2017 03:43

I think a lot of the housework schedules found online are written by Americans and I think a lot of them have a laundry day. I always assumed it was as they tumble dry everything so it makes sense to take things out of the dryer asap to shake out and fold or hang. You see a lot of American laundry rooms with a folding area. Their washing machines tend to have much quicker cycles than UK ones I think. So maybe for some it makes sense to have a designated day and get everything washed, dried, folded and put away rather than constantly having laundry at some stage n the cycle.

I tend to wash every day. A few dark loads a week, a light load, DH's gardening stuff. DS is 15 and has a laundry basket in his room although he seems to use the floor. Once a week I get him to bring his down and I do that. Cleaner comes on a Friday and I collect all the bathroom towels to make it easier for her to clean the bathrooms so I tend to do a few loads of towels on. Friday. Always tumble dry as otherwise they go hard. Bedding once a week or so - three king size beds so I do one bed about every four or five days in rotation.

We definitely wash more than my mother used to.

nooka · 05/07/2017 03:57

dh usually runs a wash for him and me once a week or so, and does bedding when he decides it's dirty. Our teenagers do their own washing rather less often. We have a huge washer and dryer (we live in North America and washing machines are indeed very big here).

When we had toddlers in nappies and lived in London washing was much more of a feature in our lives! Growing up we both lived in washing day households, I think as with baths for people washing intervals were much longer. Given how much power and water washing uses that was probably a good thing.

lizzieoak · 05/07/2017 04:06

North American machines do indeed have shorter cycles. I was really surprised at how very long my inlaws washing machine (in England) took. So between the shorter cycles and most people having driers it's maybe easier to do laundry once a week.

Having said that, I think the towels would get manky as would much else sitting around stewing in its own filth, so I wash every couple of days (2 of us).

LondonSouth28 · 05/07/2017 04:28

I am on my 2nd load since 1am - vomiting child. 2/3 more loads piled up and ready to go in. Hoping only 1 child gets the vomit bug. Load that went on last night of just clothes (including those of one potty training child - given the number of wet clothes I get back from nursery each day I'd say it's not going well!) is in the dryer. The soundtrack of my life is those 2 machines.

CaptainWarbeck · 05/07/2017 04:35

4 of us, 1 toddler and a newborn so lots of muddy/milky clothes all the time.

We tend to do a general short cool wash most weekdays, just a half load of whatever's built up over the last day.

Thursday is towels all on a 60C wash.

Friday is white bedding on a hot wash with Vanish.

Penners99 · 05/07/2017 04:42

There is just me and I do a load every two days

Ginlinessisnexttogodliness · 05/07/2017 04:43

Constantly.
At least two loads a day.

erinaceus · 05/07/2017 04:49

I love doing laundry and do not have enough clothes to wait for a full load. I launder as often as I can, back to back loads if I'm stressed.

So...more often that I should for the sake of the environment I suppose.

I also outsource the sheets, towels and shirts to my friendly Colombian laundrette, £10 for a service wash. I do not have a tumble dryer nor space to hang the sheets and towels really. My laundrette does collect and deliver but I like going round there for a gossip Blush

SabineUndine · 05/07/2017 05:36

I usually do mine on Saturday. Whites, colours and delicates. So it takes at least half a day. No tumble dryer.

BitchQueen90 · 05/07/2017 05:55

Just me and 4yo DS here. I do everything once a week split into whites, darks, colours, bedding and towels. So 5 lots once a week.

Jaynesworld · 05/07/2017 05:57

Do it everyday. Bedding once a week. Towels every couple of days.

tinypop4 · 05/07/2017 06:12

Family of 4- dc age 2 and 4 - every day. It would be a disaster if I didn't!
